MeTa post: Answers, not opinions.
I wish I had been on ADD meds as a kid. Seriously. When I tried them for the first time, in my mid-20s (Cylert), I has euphoric at what I could do, mixed with a sadness that it had taken me so long to find such help. It sure would have helped me get through school and actually, for example, focus on my homework long enough to do it.

Of course, if that had happened, I wouldn't be the person I am today, exactly. But I think I would be pretty similar; just less trauma... [more]

I have to say that I, a diagnosed ADD person, DO feel more stimulated on meds...it's just a very...grounding, if you will...type of stimulation. The way I like to describe it is, it feels like someone is standing behind you, holding your head still, forcing you to concentrate on one thing at a time. It has the feel of harnessing the energy of the sun into a single sniper rifle. It is empowering and thrilling, and it can help you hold still, but it is not calming or soothing or relaxing. At least... [more]

MeTa post: One definite, one possible
I don't get it. Is that water taxi beach on Long Island? And will we be...riding water taxis? Is there a place to actually hang out there?

Anyway, I have my first food co-op shift from about 3 to 6pm, but I may be able to come by after.

I was tired. And I didn't really understand the water taxi situation, or what you were planning on doing there.

MeTa post: We'll all need lobotomies to keep from shouting "Don't do it!"
The vast majority of AskMe questions are based on faulty assumptions.

And the real answer to almost every one is "Moron, why don't you just get a lobotomy?"

Since this is the one case in which the OP is cutting right to the real question, I don't see why we're getting so uptight about it.

MeTa post: NYC meetup on April 4th or 5th?
Another voice saying that meetups should have a location that is guaranteed for more than the first hour. Showing up to find everyone gone and then calling mission control for the next stop on the scavenger hunt is not necessarily that fun.

the place is downstairs and not well labeled. We are in the back. You should recognize pinksuperhero and others.

I work in advertising.

Sometimes I'm even responsible for ads on Metafilter.

I think the Bill Hicks routine is funny.

I think *you* are funny.

Thanks for the money, honey.

MeTa post: I thought we were progressive
Sometimes folks are drunk, sometimes folks fall asleep and knock drinks into your lap. Sometimes folks are rude. Sometimes you have an inconsolable child within 1 seat of you. Sometimes they kick the back of your seat. A lot.

This is a great list of people who should be fined, penalized, or just ejected from the plane while it's in flight. They (or their parents) can't possibly get charged enough for the privilege of bothering those around them.... [more]

MeTa post: Can I ask you a question?
mathowie: That's only the latest example. I was not trying to implicitly attack one post; I was seriously suggesting that a new flag be added.

'Questions' of this type end up with a lot of 'answers' attacking the OP for not really asking a question, and the thread turns into an argument...and after all, isn't the purpose of flags to make it easy for people to register standard complaints without actually posting an 'answer'?

I thought it would... [more]

The main problem with 'breaks guidelines' in cases like this, is that it often isn't obvious at first that the OP wasn't looking for a real answer. In fact, sometimes it's obvious that the OP thinks they're looking for a real answer, only to change their tune later in the thread.

And in such cases, let's face it, the thread doesn't get closed, because it's impossible to prove that the guidelines have been broken. Until the OP reveals more, it may not... [more]

MeTa post: Those Run of the Mill Hasidic Landlords
I was born and raised Jewish (not Hasid, but I went to Hebrew school for many years, went to a religious camp one summer, had a bar mitzvah, went on a 'pilgrimage' to Israel, etc.). It's too bad I need to say that as a set-up to give my point of view any legitimacy in this discussion, but there it is.

Judaism is, for many people, not just a religion, but a culture. For Hasids, it's a worldview, a way of life, and a central part of their identity. Although I have dealt... [more]
posted to MetaTalk by bingo at 7:32 AM on January 19, 2008
Well, bingo, then what is the answer to the OP's question?

My answer would have been to have a legally threatening letter sent to the landlord, from a lawyer with a male Jewish name. On a past occasion, I made a similar recommendation to someone in an analogous situation, with success. It might not have worked in this case, but it would be worth trying.

It's too bad that I can't give the answer in the actual thread, which has... [more]

Sorry to interrupt the love-fest, but I was at the movies for a few hours, and had left the majority of what's written below in preview, waiting for me to finish when I got back.

prophetsearcher: Because all Hasids are the same, right? I mean, they dress alike, and, like, they kinda sound the same. I guess that's sorta like how all valley girls hold identical world views because I find it hard to distinguish between them and their nutty dialects.... [more]

MeTa post: Just The Facts, Ma'am
What's even more fascinating to me is people who answer simply by telling you that they don't know the answer, e.g. "I don't know what to tell you," or "Do some research." If that is all you have to offer, then please choose between not answering and killing yourself.

MeTa post: link requests, askmefi
After reading the question 243 times, I'm convinced that grouse is right. Citizen Premier is asking whether it's okay to post an AskMe question that is basically a request for mefites to link to his website.

Um...no.

MeTa post: Why doesn't matthowie have a $200M valuation?
The question is flawed. Metafilter is a partner with Federated Media, an advertising network of independently owned sites that has the same relationship with Digg, BoingBoing, Ars Technica, and a shitload of other 'web 2.0' sites that you've heard of. Scroll down on this page and you'll see Metafilter listed along with a lot of other sites you've heard of.

Why is MeFi not part of the social news site boom?

MeTa post: Paging meetup photgraphers....
I think the ideal solution would be to keep the meetup date in the sidebar for a while, even after the meetup has actually happened, with some indicator of how recently new comments had been added to the thread.

Or, interested users could just subscribe to the RSS feed for the meetup thread.

MeTa post: Coming out of the MetaCloset
If you care that much, you shouldn't go to meetups.

Remember that there are often photos taken at meetups, and those photos are consequently later posted online and linked to from MeTa. The association between your username and your face will be inscribed ever after in the annals of the internet. If that's really too much for you to deal with, then stay at home. Or you can always take comfort in the fact that nobody really cares.
