Twin Cities meetup: Since the last attempt meetup...
Why don't we say Thursday the 12th or (ooooooh) Friday the 13th, since folks seem to be leaning towards that weekend?
So far suggestions are Brit's, Bryant-Lake Bowl and Leaning Tower. I'm happy with any of the above, although being an Uptowner, I'm biased towards the last two, and BLB trumps Leaning Tower for atmosphere, I think.
If I could toss a suggestion onto the pile, it would be Grumpy's Nordeast.... [more]

I'm thinking Brit's after work (7-ish) on Friday the 13th. If people prefer that Saturday the 14th, let's move it to then, but otherwise I'll post a reminder next week with Brit's, 7 p.m., 1/13.

Don't forget the MetaFilter (Re)Design Contest....
Can we have a guess-the-trajectory-of-the-MeTa-thread-after-the-redesign contest? Can the winners get lifetime memberships too? My prediction would be: a) 20-25 first posts along the lines of, "Wow, this looks awesome, congrats to the winners, and I really like the other designs too." b) 60-75 posts where the inevitable backlash kicks in. c) Circa post 57, someone posts the first new-design parody jpg. d) Discussion continues on parallel tracks, with copious image links and snarky... Not our most shining moment, as spotted by Leonard....
Odd, I'm with jonmc in not finding that thread particularly remarkable in any direction. I appreciated hearing people weigh in on the matter with their own perspectives and experiences, and I thought that continued to happen the whole way down, with the normal ratio of unhelpful comments in the mix.
Dancingbaptist's first comment struck me as tactless but sincere; I was surprised to read the fury it provoked. His last comment I would hardly commemmorate in the annals of... [more]

55 characters = 55 links? http://www.metafilter....
I find it hard to believe that someone is being hauled over the MetaCoals for having too many high-quality links. Tough crowd.
Seriously. Perspective: There was a front page link today to www.apple.com. But it's y2karl who got MeTaCarcerated because he posted something that 1) most people may not have seen before on the web, 2) contains interesting content, and stands a good chance of 3) warranting discussion from others. And he... [more]

For starters, dgaicun. If you want to spare yourself a harrowing read, this is that thread in precis --
Man: Hey! Look at this cool site that encourages women to stand up to the men who harass them on the street!
A Few Women: Wow! That's cool! I get harassed all the time!
A Woman: I don't have a problem with harassment.
Some Men: Yeah, these bitches need to shut up and deal, and stop trying to abridge our free speech!... [more]

I posted this in the last MeTa thread, so excuse me for plagiarising myself, but it's just as relevant here.
The reason I was agitating for the main link changed was not to influence the discussion in any way; people are going to say their piece on the war (again, for most posters) regardless of how thoughtful the initial post is. In my opinion, the thread was on track to be the "timeless" war thread, and I felt it deserved a link equal to the task of... [more]

I agree with xammerboy, to an extent. The discussion will, of course, be polarized and largely polemic, but I'm certain I can at least count on 1 post out of every 100 to shed light on a new avenue of reporting on the war I never would have discovered otherwise. I understand this viewpoint is unpopular on MeTa, but I stand by it.
In other news,
Can we please make THIS the big official front page war post 1000-comment thread instead of this?... [more]

Dreama, I respect that, and I don't want to see every news item posted to the front page of MeFi. But it is comforting to me to know that I watch this war progress as part of an intelligent community, seething with hope and loathing and awe and patriotism and fear all at the same time. That first long September 11th thread was the fascinating held breath of thousands of people recoiling in horror, and as annoying as the generally substanceless aftermath of paranoia and speculation may have... Poopy, the reason I wanted the main link changed was not to influence the discussion in any way; people are going to say their piece on the war (again, for most posters) regardless of how thoughtful the initial post is. But one of MeFi's principal virtues to me is the archive; getting to go back and see what was on people's minds a year ago, or on September 11th, what have you. Whenever I get the urge to go back and look at the thread for war, I wouldn't want to see the CNN front page, clearly... [more]

Ah yes, no posting the random Op Ed. Color me chastised. For what it's worth, I wasn't really hoping to start a discussion about the war on Iraq at all. I don't have much to say about the Iraq stuff, as I hope my posting history attests. When I post my big anti-war rant, it'll be on my blog. Stay tuned! Regardless, I understand the reasons for deletion, and sorry for stealing your sunshine. I'll stick to gay stuff in the future. Go 'bout your business.

Item! (just kidding) Why don't we keep simple...
I realize this is a fairly obvious suggestion, and I searched through the MeTa archives to see if this had been proposed and shot down with similarly obvious drawbacks (that I have somehow overlooked) before, but I could not find it.
So you all know the backstory: we get four links to the imminent war on Iraq every day; if it's not Iraq, it's I/P, or terrorism, or a link to another Bush verbal gaffe/ominous speech. Obviously, due to the tremendous number of comments... [more]

mischief, you're not losing a daughter, you're gaining a son. The community at large would still be able to participate in this stuff, only the discussions might be more thorough and focused.

Time to remove the bold tag from MeFi front-page...
I agree with mediareport, to an extent. The bold does uniquely bother me when I see it on the front page, and I generally don't mind a hell of a lot (even long, broken up posts don't irk me). But the bold turns my world all askew. It makes my eyes unhappy. Although I don't mind it at all when used in moderation. Once again, perhaps something that can be fixed with slightly more aggressive self-policing?

Add me to the liked-the-post's-wording-and-understood-its-point column. Keep on keeping on, luser. Sometimes we need a good jolt to knock us out of our comfort zone. A tragedy like this can swing right by and never hit home (all right, I need to stop with the metaphorical speech; I'm driving myself crazy).

Word to this thread being better than any of the three that prompted it. My roommate is Muslim, and it rather sickens me to hear MeFites talk about Muslims in terms of "them," condemning "their" ideas and culture as dangerous. This thread makes me feel a bit better about the whole thing. I'm engaged. Thanks especially to hipstertrash, Grangousier and ZachsMind. What would you who want a...
By the way, the Television Without Pity Buffy boards are kind of double-plus-ungood, in my opinion. And the 1984 reference is apt. It's moderated like Big Brother. The board moderators (who double as recappers for all the episodes) were fond of the show in its campier, high school, happy fun-fun days, but now seem to hate it worse than 7th Heaven (which isn't possible. it's just not). So the community there is rather bilious (for the most part, there are signs of change). And the... [more]
