Death by fat stunt falls minibike attempt

What happened to the Mccrary twin (of the Guinness world's fattest twins who ride the bikes together) in the Niagara Falls mini-bike accident? He died there, but I'm unable to find anything about how, what or why. Was he trying to jump the falls in a minibike?

Load balancing versus robustness

How important is load balancing versus server power for high volume page serving? That is, is it better to have a really robust server, or two load balanced semi-robust servers? Or is load balancing just a precautionary measure in case of hardware failure, and doesn't significantly affect server response otherwise?

How effective are government regulations for environmental concerns? Or do corporations just find loopholes around bureaucratic laws anyhow?

LCD Soundsystem's Krautrock Influence

This LCD Soundsystem song, "All My Friends", sounds similar to a Krautrock song that I've heard in the past, but I can't seem to pinpoint it. Anybody know which one? Possibly something by Kluster/Eno?

Fox in Print

Newsfilter: Murdoch Buys The Wall Street Journal/Dow Jones After some protests from editors about what sort of control News Corp. would have over the paper, a deal has been reached with the Bancroft family that runs the paper to sell for $5 billion. Murdoch gave up some demands for editorial control but still has the ability to hire and fire editors at will, making this the same sort of fig leaf agreement he made with the Times of London.

NSA Surveillance in Las Vegas for Extortion

Was there a story a year or two back about Patriot Act/NSA/FBI surveillance in Las Vegas being used for extortion against a casino? I distinctly remember something about it but can't find anything.

Who does the soundtrack to this Japanese biker Documentary

Who plays the music on the soundtrack to the movie Godspeed you Black Emperor!, a documentary about japanese biker gangs? IMDB has no info and copies of the DVD I've seen have no info. It sounds like Japanese surf rock, but I don't have a clue as to who it possibly could be.

How do I limit my salivation?

This may be odd, but how do I stop from salivating as much? I don't mean in regards to seeing food, but in general. I find that I can breath easier when my mouth is dry, which may be something to do with how the esophagus works.

Why are mental institutions and psychiatric wards always painted stark white? It seems like that environment would only precipitate more insanity.

Flood myths

From a New York journalist's description of the days after the flood:
I saw persons take watches from dead men's jackets and brutally tore finger-rings from the hands of women. The ruffians also climbed into the overturned houses and ransacked the rooms, taking whatever they thought valuable.
Sound familiar? This report about the Johnstown Flood was also filled with stories of "minority savegery", drunken Hungarians at the time that eventually turned out to be completely untrue or wildly exaggerated, such as the rescue helicoptor being shot at. also see previous mefi thread on LA looting here

"Banking establishments are more dangerous than standing armies." ~ Thomas Jefferson

Wall Street's Complicity in Financial Scandals. While the blame is parsed amongst the CEOs of companies like Worldcom, Tyco, Healthsouth, Enron, that swindled their investors for billions of dollars, prosecutors are also heading after the banks that funded their rise. Citicorp was just forced to pay $2 billion to investors for their association with Enron (NYT), for encouraging people to invest against good judgment in companies that Citicorp would profit from.

Hype is deadlier than radiation

The dirty bomb hoax. One of the biggest threats from terrorism was the supposed dirty bomb plot by Jose Padilla which eventually turned up nothing. Even if there was a plot, the threat of a dirty bomb has been over-exaggerated. The U.S. military had already tested the possibilities of a dirty bomb and discovered that "any immediate deaths or serious injuries would likely result from the explosion itself, rather than from radiation exposure." The radiation could be cleaned up with a geiger counter and a vacuum cleaner. But don't forget to buy your nuke pills! (via the Power of Nightmares)

Some Might Call it Censorship

Google Blocks Abu Ghraib Images
I went to Google Images to search for it. "Abu Ghraib" brought up only photos of the outside of the prison. Not a single photo from the scandal. Next I searched for "Lynndie England", not a single picture. Next I decided to look for "Charles Graner" her boyfriend who was also prominently features in the pictures, nothing.
See for yourself.

Taking the Same Amount of Shirt Off of Everybody's Back

Ahh, the Flat Tax. The utopian vision of Steve Forbes, Dick Armey, and anybody swimming in 1099-INT forms is now a reality in Iraq (Wash. Post link). It sounds ideal in a lot of ways; everybody pays a similar amount, people save lots of time, and IRS workers are put out of a job. But the downsides are plenty; higher deficit, no write-offs for charitable donations, and more chances that people that earn their money through labor rather than stock trading will be left holding the bag.

Comedy = Tragedy + Distance

To say that The Conqueror, the Howard Hughes-backed film about Ghengis Kahn with John Wayne as the lead, is an awful film is somewhat of an understatement. Bad acting in the hot Nevada desert surrounded by radiation from the Yucca Flats lead to around 90 people getting cancer and 30 dying from it. They even shipped radioactive sand back to Hollywood for extra scenes. Lost in La Mancha doesn't seem so bad in retrospect.

The Man, The Donkey, The Toolbox

Divine architecture or crafty workmanship? Mysterious guy shows up on a donkey to make a spiral staircase for the Loretto Chapel that defies structural possibility. Made mainly of wood, it contains no support beams and uses only wood pegs to hold it together.

If I stay in the gutter long enough, I might get trickled on

Trickle Down Economics. What with the neo-conservative movement in full swing behind Wolfowitz, the Bush administration is looking to take another cue from the Reagan years with the new tax cut for the rich. George H. Bush called it "voodoo economics". Does TDE or "supply side" economics actually work? Depends who you ask and how they take their statistics.

Fiction, Non-Fiction, Propaganda, or Re-enactment

Revoke the Oscar. Should "Bowling For Columbine" be considered non-fiction if it manipulated scenes and knowingly left out key information? Would a new category be better, like say adjusted documentary or propaganda? Or is it impossible to make a documentary without some point of view?

Let the people decide. There's lot's of initiatives trying to push Direct Democracy, like Philadelphia II, as a solution to all of the problems inherent in the political process. A few places like Switzerland, ancient Athens, and some New England towns already have it that way. A lot of them want electronic and phone voting to pave the way. Is it possible, or was Machiavelli right to believe that politics is best left to the politicians. That's what the electoral college is for.

Serial killer blog. Well not really. More of a religious rant than true crime novel, but the case of the Son of Sam murders has been reviewed for the possibility of a second suspect. An article in Fortean Times may have opened the floodgates, but I am unable to find an online source. Did anybody else see this story?
