The last training partner you'll ever need.
This is my first attempt at a solo phpbb bulletin board implementation. Actually, it's my first real programming effort EVER. A friend and I decided to start a bulletin board for the regular-guy/girl lifter, whether they be someone who lifts on their own or is just looking to finally step into a gym... either for the first time or for the first time in a LONG time. It's basically about having a community resource that is packed with knowledgeable people. I'm not posting this to drive up hits... after all to really make a difference you'd have to register. LOL. I just wanted you'se guy's critique of my first attempt at being the developer for a phpbb site... tips, tricks, obvious mistakes, etc. Thanks!! p.s. the cheesy logo is temporary until we can find someone (fandango??) to make us a logo...

I'm trying to come up with a novel solution for my office... We don't want to have weekly meetings to keep track of what each other is doing. Here's the situation...

I loves me some Metafilter and AskMe - but I can't keep up!
I use Google Reader to keep things nice and condensed, but if I go more than a full work day without checking in on the Blue and the Green posts seems to easily creep over the 100+ mark. The deluge is kind of diluting the whole Metafilter experience for me 'cause it's starting to feel like there's too much to keep up with.
Anybody out there use any tricks or methodologies to keep their required Meta-reading under control?
I'm glad I'm not an admin!
disclaimer - this is not one of those 'please limit the posts' posts, as I'm all for them. I'm just looking for a way to keep things more manageable.

This is a total waste of my two weeks, but I have to ask! In just the past couple of days, I saw a great website that showed the comparative size of objects - from as small as an atom (or smaller) to the size of the universe.

In the past couple of weeks, whenver I load a fresh copy of the Blue it takes a couple of seconds for all the links (in posts, profiles, etc.) to start 'working'. Once or twice I've gotten an error message that says "Scripts are taking a long time to load, do you want to continue loading them?". What's going on? I'm a Vista user, but as I said it's only been for the last couple of weeks, and it doesn't happen in AskMe or MetaTalk. I ask here vice in an email in the event it's happening to others...

Over 3 years ago I registered with the National Bone Marrow Donor Program as part of a charity event. It was really simple - all they did was take a little blood... Today I get a phone call that apparently, I'm a match.

I'm not quite what sure what do about a financial situation, and I'd appreciate some opinions from the hive. I'll try my best to provide additional info if necessary. Also, I would loved to have asked this question anonymously, but I can't find the 'ask an anonymous question' link anymore?? Anyway... a former employer put contributions in my 401(k)...

After seeing posts like little Miss Professor's object de amour, I don't think AskMeFi should be closed to scorn. Many people that ask questions are only looking for approval, not answers.

Merry Christmas from James
My sister sent me this link from a friend that didn't want to send out cards this year - he's not much of a singer but I thought it was a great idea! Hallmark could be in danger...

There really IS more than one internet?
First off - I'm no Bush fan, but I'm wondering if his use of the word 'internets' (although probably unintentional) isn't so wrong after all. It's no secret (pardon the pun) to those in the military and government work that there are other 'internets', such as the
SIPRNET. I'm no expert on the technicalities, but I think a user could take a leap and say that the
NIPRNET and the
SIPRNET are two totally different entities. Just pointing out a technicality, spreading a little knowledge, and adding the disclaimer that this post has no bearing on Bush's mishandled use of the term to begin with!

Flowers for all!!!
"Today a coworker of mine had a thought to send flowers to a random couple waiting in line at SF city hall.
He called a florist and they agreed to do it. He told them to deliver to any couple -- it didn't matter who -- standing in line to get married, with his blessing. The card will read simply "With love, from Minneapolis, Minnesota."
Once they understood, they were very touched and thought it was a great idea.
He told another co-worker who did the same thing. And now we want to start a movement. Wouldn't that be cool if people from all over the country, gay, straight and otherwise, started sending flowers to the people waiting in line to get married.
Call it The Big Gay Bouquet call it Flowers from the Heartland. Call it whatever you want, but help us get this off the ground.
Call Flowers on the Bay at 888-217-9119 and order a bouquet to be delivered tomorrow at noon.
And Tell all of your friends to do it.
Because straight or gay, we believe and we know many people who believe, support and celebrate the right to marriage. And we'd like to show it. We'd like to see all of the people standing in line with flowers of support from all over the country."
Apparently, flower shops in San Fran are starting to get overwhelmed...

We're filthy rich - now help us!!
This is mostly an artice about Kyoto, but one little paragraph left my jaw wide open to see that OPEC thinks they should be compensated if the world finds a better way... I guess it's not a unique concept though - does anyone have some other examples of a (potentially) failing industry that wants compensation?? My apologies if I've missed this in another thread somewhere...

Nambla unearthed...
Watch out gay community - you'll soon be under attack (once again) and for all the wrong reasons. An association that was initially intended to be an outreach program to young gay men - and was instantly iconoclized (?) into the realm of socially deviant folklore is the foucs of the current Catholic Priest Witchunt. I'm not sure what angers me more... the fact that priests violated the sanctity of their religion (i.e. trust in a relationship) or the fact that EVERYONE KNOWS THIS HAS BEEN GOING ON FOR YEARS!! Come on, you KNOW you've been joking about priests and boys since before high school.
