The "Ultimate 9/11 Truth Showdown": Taibbi vs. Griffin
I think Taibbi comes off as impatient because he's just spent months writing an investigative book about the Truther movement. In The Great Derangement he pretty effectively debunks most of their talking points.
Here's a funny excerpt from the book wherein he imagines the conversation in the smoke-filled room where Cheney and company came up with the conspiracy.... [more]

The 47th and Drexel Bit. Remember It?
Holy Shit! "Tim" is Venus Flytrap! Why was I not informed of this earlier? As a WKRP fanboy, I'm thrilled. I just found this clip from the show featuring both gents.

Seth beat Fox. Surely he deserves some sort of credit for that.#
Exactly what I was saying with my (admittedly crap) capitalism line. Shows, especially animated ones, are expensive to produce. McFarlane has found a way to do it that will allow him to operate without the constraints of network television, and he managed to cost Rupert Murdoch money in the process. We should be supporting and applauding this model.

Olympic logos from 1896 to present
Someone (probably on Mefi) said the London logo looks like Lisa Simpson giving a blowjob. Now that's all I can think of during the 200 times per day I have to look at that monstrosity. It's going to be a long four years.

Jerry Clower: A superb Southern storyteller
I remember watching Jerry Clower as a child in Jacksonville, Florida and thinking "I have to get the fuck out of this church, out of this town, and out of this country before I turn into one of these humorless, racist, bible-thumping shitheels".
I nearly made it out in time.

I am so ashamed that our country treats its prisoners worse than the Nazi's treated theirs.
Some English and American officers were relatively well treated. Corporal Goldenstein, notsomuch.

ND¢:You should live surrounded by your aunts and uncles and cousins and grandparents and whatnot, so that you have an incentive not to act the fool, because then your family will be there to tell you that you are being an idiot.
Shit, I don't even know you and I'm here to tell you that you're being an idiot.

Bill Moyers Vs. Fox News
Yeah, I guess that was pretty vague. Sorry about that.
Joseph Campbell was a close friend of and a mentor to both Moyers and Lucas. The Jedi bit was just a reference to the aplomb with which Moyers dispatches this particular stormtrooper. I'm a nerd.

This hurts. I heard that he and Tim Conway have been roomates for the last few years. It always made me happy to think of them laughing away their golden years together.
If it ain't true, it should be, goddamn it.

The Things That Carried Him
I love this piece, and I love Esquire. Wander through the online archives, and you will find many examples of fine journalism. Start with Tom Junod's excellent profiles (Mr. Rogers, etc.) and work from there.
I only wish they would jump on the "publish the entire run of the publication on DVD" bandwagon.

If there had been one moment of introspection...
They're hired killers. They're not paid to be introspective. They sign up with the unspoken hope that those who are paid to be introspective will be. Suckers.

Lights, camera, inaction!
WRT the writing credits on Fear and Loathing, in Wayne Ewing's excellent documentary Breakfast With Hunter there is a scene wherein Alex Cox and Tod Davies pitch their version of the famous "we were riding the crest of a high and beautiful wave. . . ." monologue. They wrote the scene as an animated interlude, with a literal, cartoon wave carrying Hunter from San Francisco to Vegas.
The documentary chronicles Hunter's... [more]

The Torture Playlist
And considering that the Boss had no problem getting paid to have it used in truck commercials, I doubt he really cares how people perceive it.
