The US Govt. provides the insurance for nuclear power plants. Actuaries are pretty smart. If it's safe enough for regular use, insurance companies would insure it at a manageable cost.

MeFi post: Before Roe vs. Wade.
See also Sallie Tisdale's essay We Do Abortions Here.

I find it immoral to spend money on war instead of healthcare. I find it immoral to lay waste to another country for oil. To spend American and Iraqi lives so casually. I believe abortion should be safe, legal and affordable. It's already become very expensive and, therefore, is no longer a choice for many women with unplanned/unwanted pregnancies.

My belief is based on seeing what... [more]

There's an FBI - tofu joke in here somewhere.

This government's priorities are so horribly awry that I have no idea where to begin being angry, thus, I joke.

I've seen this link in a lot of places lately, finally clicked, and it was worth the 40 seconds or so. Plus, twunt is a good addition to my vocabulary, making this a worthwhile post.

If viral marketers make a good piece of entertainment, they'll get me to click. A better advertising model than many. I'd rather watch 1 amusing video and reward the creative advertiser with my attention, than be plagued with 10 minutes of the same, intelligence-insulting ads, repeated again & again, for every 30 minutes of teevee.

MeFi post: Keeping it simple, voluntarily
Yes, they do have a sort of evangelical/earnest approach, and the let's get rid of our current stuff for hippie stuff is kind of silly. But it's nice that they want to live differently, and it's amazing that they would just give everything away. I didn't get the money in the bank vibe.

The Simple-Lifers that take their big city bucks to live cheap in the country and go all morally superior irritate me, but not as much as the big city folks who want to buy up the... [more]

MeFi post: The Open Source Boob Project
Darn tootin I favorited it. Yes, it was hyperbole, but if somebody behaves in a threatening, abusive manner, or commits assault, self-defense is generally allowed.

The whole thing, the event and the discussion, trivializes and objectifies women. The project was probably mildly amusing, and should have remained a concept, an in-joke, a mildly amusing anecdote. Stupid, stupid, stupid. Everybody comes out looking really dumb.

MeFi post: Free Range Kids
I spent a great deal of my son's childhood with my stomach in knots wondering where he was, when he'd turn up, if he was okay. Then he'd get home, safe & sound, and I'd be all nonchalant and "Hey, did you have fun? What did you do? Yeah, I wish you'd let me know where you are. I worry, ya know" but not a huge deal. And part of me worried that if he were hurt, I'd be crucified by my ex- and the press and the public. But I wanted him to have fun, be adventurous and learn stuff.... [more]

MeFi post: Abortion as Art
I'm prochoice, but that doesn't mean I think pregnancy, abortion, miscarrriage and birth are trivial. I suppose she has achieved some of her aim, in that we are discussing why this is disturbing. She seems the very definition of sophomoric.

MeFi post: Monsanto Milk
A Maine dairy labels their milk Hormone free. They buy milk from farmers who don't use rbhg (recombinant bovine growth hormone). It's not organic, but Oakhurst milk tastes better than other brands, and I like not getting the extra hormones. Monsanto sued them for making the true statement on their label. Oakhurst Dairy won and their milk is still labeled.... [more]

MeFi post: A new drug for a disease which might not exist
I've been diagnosed with CFS and fibromyalgia.

There seems to be a palette of autoimmune symptoms common in middle-aged women, especially. It's insidious: it's painful to exercise, and you're exhausted all the time, so you exercise less, and gain weight, so you feel worse. You feel like crap a lot of the time. You can't do stuff that you love like riding a bike, dancing and hiking. It makes you cranky, and pretty soon being sick a lot of the time leads to a... [more]

MeFi post: Do Not Resuscitate
The front page is all too personal today. My aunt had Alzheimers, and thankfully had made her wishes very clear to her children. She was acutely miserable in her nursing home, and was Not Resuscitated for a treatable illness. A hard choice for her children, but it was the choice she wanted.

My Mom died last week. She had a chronic illness that was killing her by inches. She was in hospice care (bless them, they are fantastic) living with my sister and several... [more]

I'm good at parking, and try to park politely, but some jackass caused 1,000 worth of damage to my car last year with his shitty truck that was big for the space, to say nothing of his parking job. That sucked a lot. So, substrate, I take great joy in your resolution of the issue.

MeFi post: Class dismissed.
Compared to people on tv, I'm not doing too well. I have to work full-time. I have to budget for trips, and I drive a 10 year old car. Compared to people in the 3rd world, I have a home with heat, comfort, clean water, and reasonable safety. I have reliable electricity and phone service. I have the luxury of having cable tv and broadband.

What makes me feel rich is having low debt, and being able to live someplace beautiful. What makes me feel poor is fear of... [more]

MeFi post: wash your hands (a PSA)
You should wash your hands when you go to the bathroom because you shouldn't transmit your germs to other people. You may think that exposure to germs is good for your immune system. Feel free to grab that handrail on the bus, then eat your sandwich. Meanwhile, lots of people have compromised immune systems, old people, babies, people who are being treated for cancer, people who smoke, etc. So stop being a jerk, and Wash Your Hands often.

MeFi post: Those mud pies were actually good for you.
There are so many additional factors. Immunizations have saved untold numbers of lives, so maybe people who have less robust immune systems are living longer. Worldwide travel means that microbes travel, too, so we are all exposed to many more bugs than ever before. Many more people eat much more meat, and the meat industry, in fact the entire food industry, seems to be filthier than ever. (I have no stats here.) The foods we eat are highly hybridized and now gene-modified and irradiated.... [more]

MeFi post: Bitter Pill
This is my town. Note that "Contraception would be prescribed after a physical examination by a physician or nurse practitioner and would include follow-up care" and that this middle school has a health center. This is not a case of school nurses in middle schools handing out contraceptives like candy. I seem to recall that my son was given tylenol at school if he went to see the nurse.

I haven't seen any information saying that available contraception... [more]

Cripes. You don't want vaccination? Instead you want measles, mumps, rubella, diptheria, whooping cough, polio, tuberculosis, chicken pox, flu, papillomavirus, meningococcus, hepatitus A & B, tetanus, Pneumococcus and rotavirus? To prevent these scourges, everybody (except 1 person, and that should be the kid with compromised health) must be vaccinated.

There is some small risk, but these diseases are horrible killers that cause... [more]

MeFi post: Gore wins Nobel prize
I wish Al would run, because he would be a good president. He's smart and ethical, and we need some smart, ethical people in Washington. The years of Bush/Cheney have damaged this country so badly. Hilary would be a pretty good president, Bill Richardson would be terrific, and I could live with any of the Dem. candidates.

She's smart enough to get into MIT, smart enough to do what was required to not get killed. Not smart enough to make a better looking art project, not smart enough to realize that wearing a circuit board and carrying playdo/sillyputty in the airport would get a reaction.
