Electronic quick-finders for dogs: fact or crap?

Has anyone tried one of the electronic quick-finder dog nail trimmers (like this)? Are they worth the extra $10 or so?

Anyone up for a Dallas meetup on February 16th at Texas Caribbean Food? (google map). Afterwards, if anyone that attends is interested, MeFite item is DJing at Night of the Loving Dead at Absinthe Lounge, right next door to TxCbbnFd.

And you thought Guitar Hero was cool...

With the wild success of the Guitar Hero series, using video game controllers shaped like guitars is nothing new. However, the duo at Modal Kombat actually use guitars as video game controllers. They won't reveal all of their tricks, but you can read a bit about their technology here and at this interview with Urban Guitar. The results are awfully impressive. View the original Modal Kombat here, and their newest installment, the admittedly trippy GuitarKart here. via

Seeking some easily available jazz recommendations, but kind of specific.

Jazz-heads - help me fill out my Xmas wish-list. Especially seeking those with rec's for (say) quartets to octets featuring Baritone Sax, Trombone, and/or strong and prominent rhythm sections.

Pocket-friendly digicam recommendations?

Recommendations for a good pocket-friendly digital camera? I'm finally ready to replace the Canon Power Shot S200 that was pinched by robbers a few years ago with a similar sized but updated camera. Looking for something approximately the size of a pack of cigarettes or smaller. Budget is in the $250-$300 range.

Dallas Meetup 16-December

Dallas (and anyone else that feels like making the drive in) Meetup! Sunday December 16th at 7 PM. We're thinking that starting at The Meridian Room in Exposition Park for appetizers (and dinner for those that want it) and then seeing where the night takes us from there is a grand idea.

So, my father has a ton of old (50's-60's) baseball/football/collector cards and is nearing retirement. I'd like to help him sell them. I've a lot of questions here.

Wishbook Web -- Christmas Catalogs through the 20th Century

Wishbook Web. Christmas catalogs scanned in their entirety from the 1944 Wards Catalog (152 pages) to the 1985 Sears Catalog (648 pages!). The site looks like it was built circa '97, but the scans are quite interesting. via - Similar posts to this one: 1, 2.

Oh, Inverted World

Oh, Inverted World. As we’ve all learned in school, 70% of the Earth’s surface is covered by water, only 30% is solid ground. What if everything was reversed? What if every land mass was a body of water, and vice versa?

Adios, Good-Latimer Tunnel

Dallas is just a little less funky now. warning: Poorly edited YouTube, but pertinent - bear with me. Not a surprise, but one of Dallas's greatest landmarks is no longer. Fortunately, plenty of people have documented the beautiful art that is no longer.

Lalo.

In a small-town jail in the upper Midwest sits a once highly-paid informant the U.S. government would probably rather you not know about. Guillermo Ramirez-Peyro, AKA Lalo, sits in prison without being charged. He's a former Mexican Highway Police Officer that found himself incahoots with the drug trade on the Juarez-El Paso border, but then received more than $200K from the U.S. Federal Government for information. The same U.S. agency that paid him, however, now wants to deport him back to Mexico and an almost certain death.

Mitzi just ain't gonna cut it.

Looking for foreign words for something akin to sock(s), glove(s), mitten(s), shoe(s), etc. I'm (apparently) adopting this sweet girl tomorrow morning, and am considering names for her. Given her markings, something like this may work, so long as it would make a good dog name.

Panama City, Florida guide

Yeah, it's another one of those "help me find resources for when I go to insert city here", but this time it's a small tourist town where the only information I can find from Google is crappy resort and vacation package sites. Probably a bit of a crapshoot, but I need some help finding info and tips on Panama City, Florida.

Literature involving Morocco

I've got a couple of friends that are getting married shortly and then taking off to Morocco for a couple of years early this Fall. Given the unique nature of the first few years of their marraige, they don't have a conventional registry. I'd like to get them a couple of books that are either set in Morocco or deal with Moroccan people elsewhere.

I've been nudged enough - by more than a few interested parties - to point out that it just may be time for another Dallas MeFi meetup. Granted, we've an awful lot to live up to this time around, but how many of us metroplexuals are in and when and where? (and yes, Eris, you brought this on - and maybe, just maybe, we can trump the record in my apartment of six people crashing at my place)
