On Having A Black Name
My English name is not the same as my Chinese name. This was for integration... "avoiding racism," I guess. My boyfriend's name is South Asian and one mailing list changes it a little on each piece of mail, until now it seems he's a Latino Englishman.

Neither technology nor magic was sufficiently advanced.
I can remember the copy of 2001 I read in seventh grade. It was an old, yellow, paperback in library binding. The cover was white. You could see dirt, smudges, and scuff marks on it. It was well-read. I brought my questions about it to my science teacher and we had such a grown-up conversation. We talked about primate and human society, human nature, and human impulsion. I remember that discussion's excitement.
What passion, precision, and reverence I learned from... [more]

Death of a Browser, End of an Era

I'm using Netscape 8.0.3.4 right now. It works well, and I like the Passcard feature. Netscape did not work well for a long time, so this surprised me. I'm sad that it's going because it's such a big part of Internet history.

PDD-NOS: I'd never heard of that...what an absurd catch-all. You've got the "Not Quite Normal But We Can't Tell Why" disease. How sad and demeaning...
Perhaps, but it is better than pushing a person into a diagnosis that doesn't fit their symptoms. Sometimes a catch-all diagnosis is a way to dismiss examination of a person's problems (for example, the defunct diagnosis of "female cancer," used to describe any cancer a female had),... [more]

Ever wanted to ask the guy next to you on the bus to shut up?
It's about saving face. The bowing to one another and all that. It's all about choosing to show respect to elders and authority...
Is this a sign of old traditions not being upheld by younger generations? Or is this a part of the tradition? An example of it in practice? Is the kid (purposefully or inadvertently) choosing to lower this man's rank in society by disrespecting him? Does this in turn increase the younger man's rank in society by that... [more]

The Logic Alphabet
If anyone's still reading... :)
A major flaw in Zellweger's argument is that most logical operators are actually unnecessary, because they can be expressed solely out of combinations of NANDs, or NORs, or NOTs and ANDs, or a number of other smaller subsets of this 16-member operator set.
From the article:
"The standard notations are analogous to the Roman numerals and mine is like the Arabic system,... [more]

"The history of all hitherto existing society is the history of class struggles."
I've read it twice. I've read about half of the Marx-Engels Reader also. Marx's commonly read works are a foundational framework for modern social analysis. But they're not the be-all and end-all.
Actually the concept of alienation is an extremely psychological one. The phenomenon that Marx tries to explain with alienation seems to me to be better explained with psychological concepts.

This is a great discussion. There is a lot here I wasn't aware of before.
I hadn't realized the term mulatto was offensive, either. Being in Los Angeles, there are a lot of offensive terms that one has to avoid using, but a lot of Angelenos wouldn't even know what mulatto means. In any case, I'm glad I know now that it's offensive.

This might not be exactly what you're looking for, but some people think there's a "military-industrial-entertainment complex." YMMV, as I first heard of it on the X-Files.

This is a good find! The FAQ on the site says this about traffic sensors:
Q. There are no speed dots for a stretch of freeway I use. Why?
A. The speeds that you see on our site come from sensors Caltrans has buried in the freeway. For freeways in less populated areas, these sensors often don't exist. For freeways in heavily traveled areas, the sensors are usually there but, for any number of reasons, Caltrans may not have speed... [more]

Infrasound animals
I grew up in Los Angeles and have heard of a few times where one student in a classroom might jump under their desk right before an earthquake actually hits. I also remember one morning when my family's pet birds suddenly got in a huge panic and my youngest sister (then about 18 months I think) started fussing and crying even though she usually woke quietly... A few minutes later, there was an earthquake.
Of course these are just stories. They've always made me wonder, though.

This murder and the debate here remind me of a conversation I had with an ex-boyfriend once. One of his high school classmates was in jail for murdering his (the classmate's) father after his father beat up his (the classmate's) mother. To me this sounded like a thing a person could plausibly do in the pressure of a situation, if they had been the object of years of abuse and witnessed years of domestic violence. My ex was scornful of the incident and said it was a "stupid thing to do,... [more]

I met Anne Rice in high school when I went to get my copy of The Witching Hour signed. I haven't liked everything she's written, but some of it is pretty good, and usually alright as genre fiction. Sometimes she does seem hissy and/or eccentric, but she was very sweet to me on that day. I say, go her. She's doing her thing and she's not hurting anyone.
