Ask post: It's a date. How do ya eat 'em?
Seconding lemoncello. Stuff the dates with roasted or smoked almonds and either goat cheese or blue cheese (a fine gorgonzola would be superb!), and heat them gently in an oven.

Serve the warm dates each on a slice of soppressata with a few arugula leaves. Drizzle with fennel-infused olive oil.

Ask post: Help me have a key made in Chicago
Go to an independent locksmith. Explain that you are the manager of an apartment complex and you need copies of that key made.

It's always worked for me, though I did happen to be the manager of an apartment complex at the time. But seriously, nobody ever asked for ID or paperwork. They just made the copies.

Ask post: Is celery burn normal?
I have never eaten celery that wasn't bitter and/or suffered a chemical kind of flavor. Just a data point: any celery I've eaten in the past five years is organic, so make of that what you will.

I should add that this is only an issue in raw celery. If it's used in stock or cooked in any way, that flavor goes away. I've always figured it was a response similar to what some people get with cilantro.

Ask post: Steel or aluminum bike frame?
So, here's the end of this story - I bought a bike, but not the Trek. My friend clued me in on an eBay auction and urged me to bid on it - he told me to bid $450 max, and if I won and I did not like what I got, he'd pay me my cost to take the bike off my hands.

So I went against the grain of the advice here and got a Serotta Nova Special X (1988) with full Dura-Ace components off eBay for $460.

It's a truly amazing ride. Thanks everyone for your advice, and happy riding!

Well, it's a moot point, since I bought a used, steel frame.

Ask post: Am I going to get sick from eating this pulled pork?
Yeah, I've eaten stuff that sat out for much longer. I do it all the time, and I never get sick.

Put some barbecue sauce on it (a spicy, vinegary kind). You'll be fine.

Ask post: Blue-Ray vs. HD DVD.
I read somewhere (the link escapes me at the moment, sorry), that the consortium behind Blu-Ray would not allow the format to be used for pr0n.

If you look at the history of technology, the pr0n industry has proven a kingmaker in a few instances of competing technologies, and those formats where it had no content available withered and died.

I say damn Target's decision, HD-DVD will be the winner.

Ask post: switch from pc to mac
I grew up using PCs - they were at home, in the schools, and (eventually) at work. My only exposure to Macs was at a job I had in college, where they still ran OS 9 (and I hated it).

In 2002, I wanted to get a laptop, and did my research, and decided the iBook was the best value out there. I bought it, made the switch, and haven't looked back.

One word on right clicking: the new Might Mouse does offer right clicking - even though it appears to be... [more]

Oh, and one more thing - I bought the first generation of Intel iMacs when I decided I needed a new computer, and it is honestly the best computer I've ever used in my life.

Ask post: Why does Metafilter hate my Macs?
I had this problem with my Macs too. You need to change the MTU on your router. Read this thread for more information.
posted to Ask Metafilter by rocketman at 7:41 PM on July 14, 2007
I changed my MTU settings from 1492 down to 1450, and suddenly Metafilter reappeared. It took me all of ten seconds to do it - a minor inconvenience, at most.

Ask post: Room for Rent
I'm the resident manager of an apartment complex that rents rooms. Here's my perspective on this.

1. I don't process rental applications, but the people that do find a credit check invaluable. In addition to getting a feel for the potential tenant in person, you get a feel for how they are with money. Sometimes really friendly, really compatible people have left a trail of crazy debt in their wake. After all, people who are looking to rent a room are often doing so to... [more]

Ask post: Help! I don't want a hole in my thumb!
Seconding wierdo.

I once cut a pretty significant chunk of flesh out of the tip of the ring finger on my left hand, doing tricks with a butterfly knife (don't try this at home, kids!), and I tore off the unattached flap of skin, thinking it would heal faster/better without it always tearing loose.

Now I have a bump of scar tissue there.

Ask post: Meta-meta Mac trouble
I have basically the same problem, though I don't have PCs running on my network at home. But still: my iMac won't load any metafilter sites (or a.whole, for that matter), but it loads at work just fine.

Actually, I take that back. I *was* able to connect to one MeFi post after a five minute wait maybe a week ago (a friend emailed the link), then couldn't load anything else.

There's that great ZZ Hill sample used to great effect by Madvillain:

Telling your brother

I'll post more if I think of them, but that's the first thing that comes to mind.

Maybe try "Computer Games", by Yellow Magic Orchestra. It's not about telephones (there aren't lyrics), but it uses a lot of digital sounding effects, especially in the intro, that bring telephony to mind.

Ask post: Can you put superglue on your tongue?
Split fingernails are a semi-common injury in baseball pitchers, and the remedy of choice is superglue. So putting it on your fingers = okay.

I realize that doesn't really help you, but there you are.

Personally, I would figure out a way to stop scraping my tongue on my teeth. But that's just me.

What about Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas? There's the great DA convention check-in scene, where the cop is all red-in-the-face with the check-in clerk. Among other hilarious episodes involving Johnny Depp as Hunter S. Thompson.

Ask post: Enlighten me
A long-lost friend of mine once came out of the woodwork and did me a favor by supplying me, at a heavy discount, three different kinds.

He explained the names of the three, the characteristics of them, and the different ways in which they would affect me. Keeping in mind that mood and context can play a great role in how you "get high", he was correct in all three cases.

Ask post: Piercing
I routinely leave my PA out for up to a week (by routinely, I guess I mean several times a year), and the only consequence is that I put in a ten gauge-ring for a week until it stretches out enough to put my eight-gauge ring back in. I use a little lubrication to help it along, and it can be tight, but there's not really any pain.

Obviously an ampallang goes through different/more tissue than a PA, so YMMV. But having an extra/smaller piece of jewelry is handy for those... [more]

Ask post: I knew I should have made a rental agreement...
In light of this, would it not be quickest, cheapest and easiest for the OP to lock this woman out and if the issue was ever raised, claim there was no such agreement, the woman was just a guest for a month and now that month has expired?

That claim would be easily proven false. Locking out someone from their residence is a really big deal where I live - I should know, I'm a resident manager. Simply put, you do NOT do it before going through the proper... [more]

Sadly, Xanadu has been torn down and replaced by a miniature golf course.

Not to be a hater, but I wouldn't recommend stopping in the Baraboo/Dells area. I grew up there, and while there are some really neat things to see, that's a weekend trip, not a stopping on the way sort of place.

Ask post: How often should a guy wash his hair?
I stopped washing my hair a couple of months ago, and started rinsing it with hot water in the shower only. Since then, my hair has developed a sort of Norwegian white-boy 'fro, where it stands out on end and looks fabulous, according to everyone who's been complementing me.

It doesn't really feel different than when I was washing it, to be honest. My scalp doesn't itch, my hair doesn't feel oily, I have no acne outbreak. etc.... [more]

Ask post: I met someone else
You know, I met someone else who blew my mind too. Times were tough between me and my S.O., and I entertained notions of infidelity. I mean, we'd totally struck a chord together!

Then I was forced to work with this amazing new person for four months, and I came to see how shallow, ignorant, and weak-willed she is, and am so thankful I'm with the woman I love and have chosen to remain faithful to her.

It seems to me that nearly everything is bigger in Wyoming and Montana - the sky is about 20% bigger. The trucks - bigger. The boots? Bigger.

Hats? Bigger. Speed limits - bigger.

I attribute it to the good old American instinct toward expansion. They've certainly got the space for bigger things out there.

Ask post: Parking Space Thievery
As a resident manager of an apartment complex, I would encourage you to be as self-sufficient as possible in solving this problem. While I can't know the kind of relationship you have with your on-site manager, I personally can't stand the tenants who feel it's their job to inform me of every small problem or infraction on others' parts, whether or not it had an effect on them.

We normally tip well (20% or more) for good service, and it's how she came to be our regular waitress - we got along well, and she was an excellent server. The only other thing I can think of is that perhaps our generosity... [more]
