Ask post: How can I repair a history of poor workmanship and communication to my boss?
...and be prepared for the fact that this "ambiguous meeting" might be the one where he fires you. It's not the end of the world, and as a high school student you're in a better position than most to bounce back from it, but it's certainly a possibility, and one you should be emotionally ready for.

Ask post: HELP with Music project plz
Flood, by The Might Be Giants. Nobody can be sad with a blue canary in the birdhouse in their soul.

Also, reggae -- Alpha Blondy, the Wailers, and lately I've been listening to Shinehead (technically reggae *rap*), who is infectiously upbeat.

Ask post: Saying it wrong, every time
The president's new-kyu-lur pronunciation is part of his Texan affectation; he's not accidentally mis-pronouncing it, he's chosen the regional dialect that includes that pronunciation. It has the side benefit that people who grew up saying "New-kyu-lur" (like me) are automatically sympathetic when some conehead gets all pissy about it.

I would guess that this KAW-mee thing is somewhere between the "I read it that way in the privacy of my own head and now... [more]

Ask post: Find a file that isn't there?

for i in $(find . -type d); do if [ ! -f $i/index.html ]; then echo "$i is missing an index file"; fi; done

Preceed the command with

IFS='\n';

and put double quotes (") around the $i's. So...

IFS="\n"; for i in $(find . -type d); do if [ ! -f "$i"/index.html ]; then echo "$i is missing an index file"; fi; done

Wierd... try

$IFS='
> '; for i in $(find . -type d); do if [ ! -f "$i"/index.html ]; then echo "$i is missing an index file"; fi; done

(yes, that's a hard return between the 's after IFS).

The $ and > are indications of prompts, do not copy & paste. Especially the $IFS= should be run as IFS=. Here is a copy/pastable:

IFS='
'; for i in $(find . -type d); do if [ ! -f "$i"/index.html ]; then echo "$i is missing an index file"; fi; done

We do more shell support before church than most people do all week... :) If I'd actually run the stupid command before I posted it I probably would have saved a couple of steps.

Fish don't have a three-second memory. This has been conclusively proven by ... some guy at a university in Scotland. Don't make me track down a link.

Mythbusters did this one too.

Ask post: Books worth reading are worth reading twice; John Morley
The Dark is Rising series by Susan Cooper is what I was reading in fourth grade, a Harry Potter fan should love it. Also check out the works of Lloyd Alexander; The Black Cauldron got all the attention but I was more into the Westmark series.... [more]

Ask post: Losing faith
I'm not sure if you would call it "losing my faith," and I'm not an atheist; but here's my story... When I was a teenager, at some point church stopped being about sunday school -- school that you went to on sunday, and learned different stuff -- and started to be about identity: who I was, what I believed, where I fit in the universe. About the same time, it was becoming really clear that a really large percentage of the stuff I'd been taught was just bullshit, and not just the... [more]

Ask post: Streaming music
I've been listening to boombastic and KEXP seattle. Both offer great, if different, selections of music, and I've found them both to be very reliable.

If I have one complaint, it's that there's not enough DJ chatter. I mostly listen at my desk and I like a talkiness now and again -- especially on warm sunny days like today where I'd really rather be on the other side of the window. Sigh.

Ask post: Stephenson's Baroque Cycle
The Confusion makes a drastic narrative switch, splitting into two more evenly-divided narratives, one paced like an adventure story and one paced as a comedy of manners (I'll leave you to guess who the respective main characters are). System of the World then switches back to a more Quicksilver-like style.

I think I am the only person in the world who didn't think these needed an editor; I relished every word.

When I was working in California I was issued dry-erase markers as part of my standard "office kit" when I started at one company but no board; fortunately, the office had windows out onto the hall, so I used that. Worked great, the window had chicken-wire inside (to keep it from shattering?), so it was like writing on graph paper.

One day, inspiration struck: I drew a chess set on the window using the wire as a board, putting the white set on the inside and... [more]

I'd be surprised if he wasn't in the sequel, but he shouldn't be in the sequel: with the breaking of the curse, he should by all rights be as dead as every other one of the zombie pirates.

Unless he'd managed to free himself from his chains and had long ago walked ashore, and was now trying to find his son, while avoiding his former crewmates like the plague.
