The future via haruspicy

Need to know the future? Try a little haruspicy. Full details, including a script in Greek, here (don't worry, they use an egg). For the animal rights activist, there's a cruelty-free method.

Good site for borrowing books?

Can anyone recommend a good site for borrowing books online? Physical books I mean, not e-books. I've found Booksfree; are there any others out there?

I've read all his stuff; who else would I like?

The Literature Map. Type in an author, and it tells you who wrote similar stuff. Includes a nifty floaty effect. And you know, I never knew that Jane Austen and Socrates had so much in common.

What Happened to A Common Reader?

Ack! My favorite bookseller, A Common Reader, seems to have vanished. The web page is blank, and calls to the 800 number are unanswered. Has anyone out there heard anything? How do you go about finding out if a company has gone under and what the heck happened?

I'm trying to set up a very simple 2-PC network, with no networking experience, and I can't figure out why it won't work.

Are these refried beans vegetarian?

The debate around the house this week is: Do cans of refried beans labeled "fat-free" count as vegetarian refried beans? Or does it have to SAY vegetarian on the label? One side says that if it's fat-free, the beans weren't cooked with lard and it's therefore vegetarian; the other side is not so sure.

Where can I get a handwriting font that's basically unreadable?

I'm looking for a bad handwriting font. I want it to be so bad that it is in fact unreadable, smeary, even. Is there such a thing?

Cheap Atlantic City Lodging?

I'm going to Atlantic City in October, and the prices to stay on the boardwalk are prohibitive, so I want to stay just outside the city. Anyone know the area well enough to make suggestions? For example, right now I'm looking at hotels in West Atlantic City -- is that a nice area, or would slightly-fearful me not be comfortable there?

Is there a Car Dealer Ratings site?

A friend of mine is "pretty sure" (*sigh*) that somewhere on the internet there's a site where people post ratings of local car dealerships, so one can tell the sleazebags from the good guys before one goes car shopping. I cannot find it. Anyone?

I'm using the video component of AOL Instant Messenger. I can see and hear the person I'm talking with in real time, but he sees me with a long delay, and the audio is very unreliable. I'm not really looking for a definite answer, but maybe some pointers of where I can go to get more information and things to try. The AOL site does not provide much in the way of tech support.

Paper or Plastic?

What can you do with all those plastic bags? I use mine for scooping cat litter, but some people get really crafty with them. And really clever.

I was told when I bought my house it was one of...

Aladdin Houses. I was told when I bought my house it was one of these, but this is the first time I've run across information about the company. These were houses built from a kit, like the Sears Houses that more people seem familiar with. This site has lots of old catalogs scanned in -- as near as I can figure out, this one is mine. I can attest to the fact that they hold up pretty well. You can still buy prefab homes of course, but they lack the ye-olde excitement of age.
