Surfer Girl

No, not that Surfer Girl. I wrote this years ago back when the internet was still pretty new and AOL chat rooms were becoming popular. Recorded on my first Mac with no bass and a drum machine that I had absolutely no idea how to work.

Connecting an Xbox so it comes on automatically

When I had a Playstation, I could just turn it on and it would appear on the TV. I now have an XBox hooked up to the same TV through the same scart connection, but have to cycle through all of the inputs on my TV to get the XBox screen to appear. Is there a way to make it automatic like it was with the Playstation?

Life In The Fast Lane

Wal-Mart workers walk out. "It's the first time that Wal-Mart has faced a worker-led revolt of such scale, according to both employees and the company". Apparently the working conditions of Wal-Mart employees is not much of a concern to The Eagles though. Time to start greasing the wheels for the new album.

PRS demands fees from musical instrument shops

A few years back ASCAP, the performing rights agency that collects fees on behalf of songwriters and publishers, attempted to collect licensing fees from summer camps for songs sung around the campfire by Girl Scouts. This week, PRS, the UK equivalent of ASCAP, flexed its muscles by demanding a licence fee from a guitar shop owner for customers who play copyrighted riffs while testing instruments. Jimmy Page must be rubbing his hands together.

What on earth is that sound?

At the end of Abbey Road, John, Paul and George are trading guitar solos and the section ends with John playing a guitar part that sounds like a howling or blaring car horn. How did he get this sound? Is it feedback? Or is it maybe some kind of pedal effect?

How much should I charge?

A former colleague of mine has a consultancy business and wants to subcontract some work to me. I would be introduced to the client as the person who will be handling all aspects of the project and will also be the main point of contact for that client. I know how much this client will be billed on a monthly basis and my question is what percentage of that amount should I realistically expect to receive for doing all the work? Is there a standard subcontractor percentage that I can quote?
