Ask post: How do I resurrect this iBook?
Thanks for replies. I know disc is good as I've tried a second set and am having same problem. And I don't have a firewire port. Have also tried the PMU thing with no luck.

The OS I'm trying to install is Jaguar and it is on CD, not DVD so that's not problem. I don't have a Panther CD.

I'll give linux a shot. I didn't know you could install linux on a mac though.

Just trying to avoid unnecessarily trying a new... [more]

Ask post: Piano sheet music - breaking the chains
I agree with invitapriore that although knowing music theory might help, I don't necessarily think learning it is going to get you where you want to go. You need to train your ears.

I can play most songs by ear on guitar and although I suck on piano, it's because I have no style when I play piano. That is, I can usually figure out the chords pretty quickly to a song on the piano but can't really embellish the melody when I play. Since you're an accomplished player, I... [more]

Ask post: Decrease spam reaching Gmail inbox
The spam comes to my real email account and not from a forwarded one. It's not huge numbers or anything. But if I get 30 spam messages a day, Gmail used to catch every one of them. Now about 5 or 10 of those will get through and this happens daily. So I was curious if there was some setting I could adjust in gmail to make the spam control a bit tighter.

Ask post: Will an FM transmitter from the US work in the UK?
Strange that consensus says it should work fine as my experience has been different. Brought a US car with stock radio over to the UK and had to have something fitted to the stereo to allow it to tune in UK radio stations. Even with that fitted, it still doesn't get many stations.

For my iTrip, I had to track down a list of UK frequencies and upload those on to my iPod before it would work. I was told it was something about the US tuning in only odd number... [more]

No problem. FYI though, my car has a programmable tuner and when I first got the car to the UK I could not tune in any stations at all. After a tuning device was fitted I was able to get a few.

The next time you see the girl you could just ask her to please not talk to your cat from their bathroom window as it freaks the cat out. Then also mention that she might want to get some curtains for her bathroom as you can see into it. It's then up to her.

As Dee Xtrovert says, "buy ons" are typically only associated with big shows i.e. stadiums, etc. I don't think they really exist on the indie level.

Ask post: Why is one eye all blurry?
This is probably not the answer but I'll throw it out there anyway. My 80 year old mom woke one morning with blurred vision in one eye. Two days later it was no better so she went to a doctor and it turns out she had left a contact lens in there that had adhered to her eye. They peeled it off and she was fine.

If your mom occasionally wears contacts it might be worth checking.

Ask post: Where can I get a cheap guitar in London?
I recently bought my daughter a Yamaha F310 and think it's a great first guitar. I bought mine used on loot.com for about £25 but got lucky that someone was selling one so cheap in my neighbourhood. However, there are a few now on ebay UK and lots of shops sell them.

GAK is a very reputable place and you can buy it from there and have it shipped.... [more]

Ask post: How can I help my (nearly) seven year old son "get" maths?
Our daughter struggled with basic math around 8 years old and lots of friends recommended Kumon to us. I was skeptical but have to say it really helped my daughter. While the rest of her class was moving on to multiplication tables, etc, Kumon started my daughter back at the very beginning i.e. very simple addition and subtraction. She would do a ten minute assignment book each day and then go to the Kumon centre once a week to turn everything in and do another workbook. Her number bonds... [more]

Ask post: Has iTunes responded to your application?
itunes used to offer direct deals with various indie labels but don't really do that anymore. So unless it's a big record, I doubt they would be taking your boyfriend's releases.

Although aggregators like to say they market your music, most don't so choosing an aggregator in your boyfriend's case should mostly depend on how many he thinks they are likely to sell. Tunecore doesn't take any royalties on sales but they do charge up front fees. Other aggregators will... [more]

Sounds to me like the barista was a bit of a dick. Suggest to the customer if you like that the icing may spoil the drink but to say "we're you're about to do is really not OK" is simply ridiculous. Ask post: Who's making money off of our music?
Whoever put them up for you can have them taken down and as Drezdn says, it's probably one of the aggregators like CDBaby. Does your drummer not get any statements from anyone? Since you believe it might be CDBaby, I would start by contacting them first and see if they are looking after the titles. If so, just tell them you want those tracks removed.

Thanks for the suggestions. MC, I like the wireless speaker system you linked to and will definitely look into something like that.

Ryaske, I already have a modded Xbox in my living room but am missing how that would allow me to play music in my kitchen.

Squeezebox looks great but that plus amplified speakers is a bit more than I was looking to spend on this.

Ask post: How DO you backup Windows XP?
On my computer I have two Mozy processes running all the time (Mozy backup and Mozy Stat) that take up about 50mg of memory. I don't really know what that jumps to when it starts the actual back up because I do that in the night but I suspect it shoots up. I don't notice any performance problems with that constant 50mg usage but it does seem like kind of a lot considering it's not doing much most of the time. You might want to check to see how much memory your Mom and brother have just to be... [more]

Toledo Window Box was the first comedy record I ever bought when I was a kid and I listened to that record, along with An Evening With Wally Londo, endlessly. To this day, each time I make sandwich I think of that bit where he says (paraphrasing) "you know when you reach down into the pack of bread you always skip the first few slices. Why do we do that? Ask post: How can my friend get the rights to sell mp3s?
I agree that you won't get the time of day from major labels so don't bother with that. And until you're a well established retailer you also won't be able to speak to the aggregators like The Orchard or IODA. However, there is nothing stopping you from setting up the shop and approaching local bands and small labels to see if they'd like to make their stuff available through your site. As long as you can show those artists or labels that the site works and that they are getting paid properly... [more]

Ask post: What should I negotiate for the use of my song?
If a song is on a compilation album on iTunes released on Label A and also available on the artist's album, Label B, and someone buys the compilation, the royalties are paid to Label A. Label A typically will have licensed the track from Label B (or the artist directly) so they'll have to pay a percentage of that fee back.

As for iTunes international, if a label supplies an album to iTunes they have to specify the international rights they hold for that release. If... [more]

Ask post: How do I assemble a bbq without instructions
I think you're right and I think I just found out where it goes. It looks like it sits in the grill above the thing where the flame comes out.

My last grill had a bottom rack that the rocks would sit on but this one doesn't seem to have that. Are there some gas grills that don't use rocks at all?

I don't know where you could find an instruction manual, but you could post photos of all the parts you don't understand on Metafilter and we could help you work it out...

Thanks for that. Going to take a crack at putting it all together tomorrow and will post photos if I hit more snags. In the meantime, if anyone knows the model and can lead to instructions I'm still looking!

Here in the UK, Virgin Media has just started limits. I'm on the XL service (highest) and I believe if I go over 3gb during peak times (10am - 3pm or 4pm-9pm), they lower my speed by 75% for five hours. When this happens I can still browse the net, watch youtube, etc. so it's not that big of a deal. But 5gb per month? That's just ridiculous.

Thanks all. This was more of a curiosity question for me and wasn't based on a specific need at moment.

Lots of great answers here. I had assumed that usability tests would take place but I guess my biggest question was how companies were able to estimate how a better customer experience would necessarily equate to additional revenue in their pockets. So, for example, I guess it was a few years ago that Amazon enabled customers to search through books and read certain... [more]
