Burning Blue
Relatedly, is anyone (else) going to Wickerman?

Just back from Wickerman. Awesome. The site is wooded, with a large creek/small river and lots of shady, semi-private spots. It's a burn where you can actually have some time alone, if you can imagine such a thing.

Thanks!
I got two giant syringes, complete with giant needles, from ColdChef, out of the blue, with no real connection to anything I'd written. My favorite part was the explanatory letter, on his office stationary.

Mathowie for the win
My ex-wife's namesake was convicted of hiring a hit man to kill her ex-husband, all in the same metro region. It's a fairly unusual name, too. I got a lot of calls about that when it was in the news. Even now, several years later, the first page if google results are about one of them or the other. I, of course, think this is hilarious; her, not so much.

Seriously?
This is a perfect example for why nasty, racist, sexist, and just plain stupid comments should not be deleted. It's good, very good, that there's a record of what an idiotic shit The Jesse Helms is.

Artomatic 2008 in Washington, DC
I'll go and see, for sure. I've been to a couple Artomatics in the past. The quality is, as one might expect, highly variable, but it's worth a trip. We should definitely set up a time and place to meet and greet.

Are snarky one-liners being deleted in the Blue?
Hey, let's take it a step further. Close the accounts of everyone except Matt, Jessamyn, and cortex! That way, the mods will never, ever have to put up with anyting they don't like!
Heavy-handed comment deletion is bullshit, and it's hurting Metafilter.

It's just like a meet-up except better because it's not in Berkeley.
I'm usually down for a meetup. peeeeeeeeedro's bar has my vote, though I have been wanting to try that Rhode Island Avenue Mexican food place.
I don't have much desire to have a meetup at the Hall of Mammals, on a weekend, during spring break, during the cherry blossom season. Might be a bit crowded, not particularly conducive to a meetup, and, well, I have seen it already. Besides, 1 suggested it, and he's an asshole.

The 28th at Nanny O'Brien's sounds good to me.
I'd like to just head there after work, instead of going home then going back out. I could be there by 6:30 or so. Most meetups I've been to have lasted several (many?) hours, so folks could trickle in and out at will, I suppose.

So far, that's the plan, indiebass. At least, that's where I'm planning on being. Unless someone comes up with a better idea. At any rate, Nanny O'Brien's is in Cleveland Park, close to the Metro and across the street from the Uptown. I'll plan to be there around 6:30. Unless someone wants to be there earlier.

Sweet!
The "big table in the darkened cave of a back room" sounds good to me. It'd probably be easier to find folks that way. There have been some recent missed connections at meetups.
As I've noted before, I'm 6'5" and pony-tailed, so I'm pretty easy to pick out in a crowd. I'll try to remember to bring some metagrams, too. If anyone wants my cell phone number, shoot me an email.

Scrump Goes For Broke
To follow on to what jbickers (and others) is saying, the fact that the old-timers are part of the problem indicates to me that the problem is nothing new, or even a problem, really. Most of my recent dissatisfaction with the site is due to over-moderation--let folks be uncivil, sexist, and racist, as long as they're honest. If there is going to be heavy-handed moderation, make it consistent, at least, not reliant on the personal likes and dislikes of the moderators. This... [more]

I wonder how many different times I could say that I am not critical of such people and still be accused of being judgmental and bigoted.
Not calling such people's self-chosen descriptor "silly" would be a really good way to avoid that.

Cultural Biases In Education
Once you start showing pictures of Castro's hairy thighs, you're just engaging in tabloid education, and if this is what these students get, they aren't learning critical analysis and how to evaluate information. They're basing their beliefs that Castro was a bad dude on the fact that he looks disgusting on the beach.....I don't mind the implication that "this guy is bad, our society has decided that freedom is important and that we should have the rights to do... I always thought of it as being said by Professor Membrane from Invader Zim.
Because he definitely pronounces the exclamation point.
I always thought it was from Bill Nye the Science Guy, who stole it from Thomas Dolby.

Metro is very convenient--it's a bit more than a block, but Dremo's is an easy east-ward walk from the Courthouse station. I've never driven there, but I understand parking isn't too difficult, especially since it'll be a Tuesday.

You know, maybe we should just start out downstairs--probably makes everything easier. I'll try to sit near the back of the movie-watching area, hopefully snagging a couch or chair.

I'm heading out now! Should get there shortly after 6. I'll meander through the main bar carrying my MetaGrams, so give me the high sign if you see me. I'll then head downstairs, to the back-ish part of the movie area, near the (downstairs) pool tables and bathrooms which figured so prominently in the last meetup's events. If you've not been to Dremo's, the stairs to the movie area are in the back left as you enter the main bar area--just keep walking past the bar, the (upstairs) pool tables... [more]

Glad everyone could make it out. I'd say we gave Dremo's, and especially the Washington Psychotronic Film Society, a blow-out going-away party. I think I met everyone.
And now I'm at work. What a let down.

And thank you, doctorschlock, for providing so many years of excellent entertainment. I started coming to your shows 8 or so years ago, when I worked on the same block as Lucky Bar. Think the service at Dremo's was bad? Sheesh, Lucky Bar was the pits. My friends and I started the evening at Madhatter; back then, they had free wings and $1 beers on Tuesdays. Most weeks, we'd then head over to Lucky Bar for movies (sometimes, it was Chaos for drag bingo, or, well, we'd just stay at Madhatter and... [more]
