Ask post: Recommend me a hotel in Houston
Pretty much anything in downtown or the museum district / medical center areas will be in walking distance from the metro rail line.

As for safety, I'd recommend staying in the museum district or medical center, first. Downtown, second. Reliant Stadium area, third.

I don't know what you consider cheap, but the Holiday Inn Medical Center has standard rooms starting at $149 per night, for two people. It's one block away from the Metro Rail.... [more]

MeFi post: Major Hurricane Gustav heads for Louisiana
Jimbob: I'm pretty sure msconduct means that there are no official, manned shelters at this time. As I understand it, the priority was to get people to evacuate, no to lull them into a false sense of security by manning local shelters and giving them an extra excuse to stick around.

MeFi post: Mythbusters Gagged
sdodd: I've never been more impressed with Mythbusters than when they demonstrated how easy it is to defeat fingerprint scanners and motion detectors.

That reminds me of a story. I signed up for a safety deposit box at the local Bank of America branch. The bank officer boasted proudly about the high technology security the bank used to protect the boxes. A major part of that security was a hand scanner that was used to control access to the safe room... [more]

Ask post: Excel 2007: Filter one sheet based on a range of cells in another sheet
Thanks already, but now I have another question. I'm trying to implement Perplexity's solution, but I'm having the following problem:

I type the formula into the first cell, works great. Now I copy it to the second cell...

Problem: The formula changes to: =COUNTIF(ParentSheet!$A$2:$A$51,A2)

So, the ParentSheet cell range is advancing (which I don't want), as is the ChildSheet criteria cell (which I do want).... [more]

Ask post: Deutsche Bahn ban: binding?
You'll be fine.

I've taken several overnight trains in Austria and Italy this summer and didn't see/smell anyone breaking the no smoking rules. The rules are definitely enforced. The worst you may have to deal with is a slightly smoky bathroom, but they're usually well ventilated and the smell clears out quickly.

MeTa post: the bad bad internets
paisley:

Here's how it worked for me. Originally, Avast (my antivirus tool) popped up a warning for me. Then cortex "munged" the offensive URL, changing it from http... to hxxp...

Firefox then complained that it didn't know how to handle that protocol (hxxp). Then Cortex changed the URL again / removed the offending code completely, and neither Avast nor Firefox made any complaints after that.

So, if you're... [more]

Ask post: Please evaluate my route from Italy to Spain by car
My only comment would be that you can find some nice scenery and beaches 20-30 miles southeast of Genova. Genova's not so nice, and I didn't find the Italian coast between Genova and Ventimiglia to be all that great, either.

I suggest that you take a short detour and spend a day or two around Sestri Levante or Levanto.

JimBob: I would say car number 2 goes first, because it's going straight but car number 1 has to cross traffic.

In some jurisdictions, you are correct. Car #2 would have the right of way in Austria, for instance. I wouldn't be surprised if the rules in Australia were the same.

Ask post: What city should I visit in Europe?
Three days is pretty short, but you could fly to Split, in Croatia. You should be able to get cheap, round trip tickets from SkyEurope.com from Vienna / Bratislava to Split.

Split is on the mainland coast of Croatia. The town itself is pretty nice. It has several hostels and some beaches, as well as shopping and mid-sized city amenities.

You could also stay on either Brac or Hvar, two islands close to Split (I estimate 30-45 minutes by ferry).... [more]

How is this post anything more than spam? Two links - one to a corporate PR site, and one to a youtube video advertising the corporate PR site. I flagged it and MeMailed vacapinta yesterday (because it was after midnight in the US when I saw it).

Ask post: what should i buy while im in the usa that is much cheaper than in europe? Will i need to pay taxes too as a german citizen?
Outdoor / sports gear, clothes, electronics.

Sales tax differs from state-to-state (and locality-to-locality). You SHOULD do it like this: save your receipts and ask for a sales tax refund at the airport before you leave the US. Then, declare the goods and pay VAT on them at the airport when you arrive in Germany.

If you're a little daring, and your new purchases aren't too ostentatious / obvious, you can skip getting the tax refund in the US,... [more]

Careful on the Levi's. Last time I was in the US, I didn't have much luck with Levi's sold at normal department stores. I used to do this a lot, but I hardly do it any more. I'm not a neurologist, but I'll share my theory and how I "overcame" this annoying habit.

First, the theory. It's a good idea to do some pull-ups and other back exercises along with your push-ups. I went from 25 push-ups a day to 300 a day between 2005 and 2007. Now I'm dealing with some minor back problems that my doctor says are partly due to having an overdeveloped chest and shoulders, countered by a less-developed back.

I'll second GardenGal's advice. If you can afford it, pack light and plan to buy a few articles when you get there.

There are TONS of shops in Rome, for instance. Prices are generally reasonable (unless you're in an upscale designer store, or smack in the middle of the old city), and if you look a little (down side streets, for instance), you can find stores with excellent prices and helpful personnel.

First time sex is not universally bad.

You need to relax. It sounds to me like you're overthinking it. Simply roll with the flow. Don't schedule it, plan it, run through it in your head over and over. Just hang out with her, and after spending a nice enjoyable evening together, allow the natural transition to sex to occur. Don't think of it as a make-or-break performance.
