MeTa post: the bad bad internets
paisley:

Here's how it worked for me. Originally, Avast (my antivirus tool) popped up a warning for me. Then cortex "munged" the offensive URL, changing it from http... to hxxp...

Firefox then complained that it didn't know how to handle that protocol (hxxp). Then Cortex changed the URL again / removed the offending code completely, and neither Avast nor Firefox made any complaints after that.

So, if you're... [more]

MeTa post: Following in someone's good footsteps ...
I apologize for being an argumentative dick in lots of politicsfilter threads between 4 and 8 years ago. I have since turned over a new leak and am trying really hard not to be a jerk :-)

MeTa post: Troja!
Now Firefox complains that it doesn't know how to open the protocol - but at least Avast isn't complaining about any trojans any more.

Thanks cortex...

MeTa post: Pompous bands do not make good questions.
A little off-topic. I'm going to drop a couple of questions in here because I'd like to have them answered, but I don't want to make a dedicated MeTa post about it.

How is this post anything more than spam? Two links - one to a corporate PR site, and one to a youtube video advertising the corporate PR site. I flagged it and MeMailed vacapinta yesterday (because it was after midnight in the US when I saw it).

In my MeMail to vacapinta, I made... [more]

jessamyn: Thanks for the answer. It's sometimes hard to figure out which questions deserve their own posts, which should be emailed to a specific mod, and which should simply remain unasked.

MeTa post: Mefi Made Me See The Light!
I can't point you to a specific comment, but Mefi certainly played a noticeable role in moving me down the road from my Texas conservative Southern Baptist Republican upbringing to my Euro socialist liberal heathen current state.

I shudder when I look back at some of my older comments, and realize just how narrow-minded I was, back in the day. Thanks mefi.

MeTa post: Proposal for new MetaFilter guidelines
Mister_A: MetaFilter is a gladiator arena, and we are the blood-thirsty crowd.

Metafilter, that's where I'm a gladiator!

MeTa post: Civilisation Vs. The Middle Ages. This has got to...
The online Oxford dictionary suggests "Civilization" when one searches for "Civilisation", even in the UK view. In the "civilization" entry, "civilisation" is included as an alternate spelling. The online Oxford Dictionary does not have an entry for "civilisation". Who's kooky now, brautigan?

MeTa post: A recent comment about "feeling gypped"...
anathema: My thoughts are this: Screw MonkeyFilter and the other spinoffs, someone needs to start PCFilter. No offense, Ljubljana, but gimme a break.

As the brother of an adorable, intelligent and very creative little gypsy girl (adopted by my parents 12 years ago), I find the term and the generally negative stereotypes about gypsies offensive and outdated.

How about giving my little sister a break and using a synonym (conned,... [more]

dgaicun:

The Roma are an ethnic group, not a nationality. If a white family adopts a Hispanic child, does that child stop being Hispanic?

She's aware of her heritage, and is keenly interested in learning about it. She's also aware that gypsies have been oppressed and looked down upon in Europe for the last ~1000 years.

She's only 15, and I don't think she would be angry or offended to hear the term, but I don't think it... [more]

languagehat quoting GeekAnimator: Amusing. I was completely unaware of the racist overtones of the word "gypped". Having said that, if anyone ever actually got offended if I used it, it'd be awful hard to keep from laughing.

If someone said "gypped" in the presence of my little sister, then laughed because she was offended by it, I would kick his ass.

BTW - Apologies to all for my immature response(s) to this topic. I took it personally, and I shouldn't have.

This thread disabused me of my notion that "gypped" was universally acknowledged as an ethnically derogatory derivative of "gypsy." I was arguing (albeit in an incommensurately belligerent manner) with that mistaken premise as my foundation. It's interesting to learn that the term's provenance isn't universally agreed upon.... I couldn't read this thread through to the end, but I would like to thank all prior castmembers in this little sketch entitled "Parody of a Perfect Messageboard Blow Up" for a wryly humorous hour or so of reading.

Splendid performance, all. The only things missing, unless they found their way into the story somewhere past the point where I stopped reading, are a couple of moniker suicides and someone to make the snide observation that the whole spectacle was... [more]
