here's an interesting dilemma. the hate site referenced in
this thread is being threatened with legal action from a company named
the vanguard group.
how do we feel about this?

I've been on metafilter all day, and every comment in every thread from March 2 9:29pm is marked as new. I logged in this morning at or about
12:52 PM, and it is 3:23 as I write these words.

idea (or has this been suggested before?):
what if each thread and comment had a "notify" link next to it; click the link and you get a pop-up window asking if you'd like to send the note, and if you clicked yes, a notification would be sent to matt, saying "this thread needs your attention" or "this comment needs your attention".
that way, people could notify matt of double posts and flamewars while they were reading the thread; this would eliminate the need for matt to constantly monitor the board himself, and potentially cut down on all those annoying double post comments.
the note could either send a separate email to matt, or it could just send a note telling him to go to a page that would compile the red flags by thread. he could see at a glance that 1 person flagged thread (a) and 12 flagged thread (b), and so on. this page would have check boxes next to each comment that had been flagged, so that matt could delete each notice once he had dealt with the trouble post.
if that seems like it would generate too much mail for matt, then a hybrid "star chamber/notification system" : this feature would be activated for 20 active, trusted members (preferably in various time zones).
the main result of this feature would be to eliminate the need for matt to continuously monitor the board himself, while at the same time ensuring that he makes all the calls regarding the appropriateness of any given post.
does my description make sense, and is this an idea that would save you time, matt?

I'm currently visiting metafilter with my images turned off in the hope that it will reduce server load just a little. does it?
along the same line of thought, matt, an version of metafilter until server problems are resolved? ala emergency CNN? would it make a difference?

Were the clues found by law enforcement officers planted to mislead the search for the perpetrators of 9.11? I've been wondering, and
so does Stratfor.

when I use blockquote, it screws up the formatting for the rest of the page (margin way-left). what should I be using instead?

Four sites account for half of Web surfing
'Even more significantly, the number of companies controlling 60 percent of all U.S. surfing time plummeted from 110 to 14, according to Jupiter Media Metrix, which released the survey Monday.'

cell phone rings?
the next napster. (could, could, could. do you think record companies will actually pursue this?)

another hairbrained scheme.
verisign (owner of network solutions) has devised a proprietory system that will allow cell-phone web-surfing fools to type in a phone number instead of a URL. it seems that "www.news.com" is hard on a keypad.
you have until april to apply to the new service (called WebNum) for one of the easy-to-remember numbers...1000, say. at which point WebNum (how much do I like saying that?) will decide on the most "effective" assignment of the requested shortcuts.

I have no idea what this is.
monty python meets the near east. (warning: fairly loud audio; flash required)
I would think this was one of those "viral marketing" sites except that it's in... turkish?
any ideas what this is? babelfish doesn't translate turkish.

I just want to say wow, and congratulations, matt.
so far, I must say (napster/nader/election mania notwithstanding) I think metafilter is scaling beautifully. well done.

when I try to go to the discussion on october 16 bug, I see a brief glimpse of the page, then it goes to "HTTP/1.1 404 Object Not Found".
It didn't do this yesterday.
that is all.

talk about a captive audience
'AT&T Corp. is mulling a plan ... [that] ... would charge for each customer that accesses an Internet retail site using AT&T’s communications network. It would receive an additional commission when customers buy something, analysts said.'

there's trolls in there, lots of them.
holloway leads the pack, but there are a few others walking right behind.
matt, have you even looked at this thread? it's really offensive, completely unproductive as a conversation--the misogynists came
out of the woodwork too quickly for that.
honestly, if it were me, I'd boot a few people, but you might consider at least pulling the thread....

In the late 90's, Sophonie Telcy's mother illegally entered this country from Haiti, looking for a better life for herself and her daughter; last spring she turned the care of the 6-year-old child over to an old friend, returned to Haiti to see a doctor, and died.
Sophonie's father is unknown. She has no legal standing in the US, no residency papers, no health insurance...and, despite a loving family who is willing to care for her,
very little chance to stay here. Congressman Alcee Hastings filed
House Resolution 4179, "for the relief of Sophonie Telcy," but the bill will almost certainly fail. (
read more about it here.)
The bill has been referred to the Subcommittee on Immigration and Claims. I'm not sure what to do here to help, but I have listed all the members of this subcommittee on
my website if you'd like to write or call.
Any other ideas?
