I agree with insomnyuk about the complete offensiveness of the word. for me, this is an additional layer above and beyond "everyone's a target" (which is not a good thing in and of itself).

the terms used when attacking others are very telling: are racial epithets acceptable? terms that are derogatory to women? terms that are derogatory to certain religions or nationalities? where those lines are drawn tell every reader and every participant who is welcome in... [more]

I don't agree that google bombing is wrong--I added my links to the recent verisign googlebomb.

it's an organized response. if every single weblogger in the world posted a note about what happened to hoopla, it wouldn't register on google, because all of the words would be different, even though the idea would be the same.

as has been pointed out, it takes a large number of people to successfully create a google search result--and so googlebombs... [more]

voyageman: Doed the WSJ's OpinionJournal.com qualify for "blog" status ?

I count it as a weblog (I even link it on my portal page): it's frequently updated, it links to the things it references, and it's maintained by a human being.

I don't count news aggregators as weblogs, and I don't count commentary that doesn't link out to things referenced (that's just a transplanted old-media column). but whether or not it's... [more]

Don’t like a site? Turn ‘em in.

no, it doesn't work that way. spamcop parses the headers and then lists the ones that appear to be the culprits. it's up to the person reporting to send the reports on, and it's up to the host to respond accordingly.

but you would have to be in the headers in order to be listed. mistakes happen--sometimes human error (I reported my husband once) and sometimes just header confusion (I reported... [more]

What's wrong with FPP?

matt feels that it is too jargon-y. he prefers MFP (metafilter post) for things that appear on the top page, MTP (metatalk post) for things that appear on the top metatalk page, MFC for a metafilter comment, and MTC for comments in metatalk.

that way, newcomers don't feel like metafilter is a club where you have to know a special language to join in the conversation.

anil: meaninglessness of circ figures here well, I gues it's interesting to me because banner ads are dying because people expect a level of provable interaction with an ad that isn't possible, and therefore not expected in the print world.

blah, it's "being used as a dating service" when the weblogger is using it to actively solicit dates, not when it results in accidentally meeting someone else.

well, it's clearly an aggregator. on the other hand, if you're going to define a weblog strictly by its format (a series of frequently updated entries in reverse chronological order), then the google aggregator clearly qualifies.

well, the last one of those I got came to my email address, my email address with the words REMOVETHISBLOCK in it (which I recently added to my address on my website) and three other webloggers. in other words, I sincerely doubt it came from here. I never even thought that it might be other than regular old spam.
