WTF? You people are responding as if you've never heard of Barbapoppa. Is this possible?! I've hated these things for on 35 years.

I have always hated Dana Carvey but I laughed at every one of those sketches (though the first link doesn't work in Canada).

No, zardoz. I've been watching everything for a very long time and I can assure you that this is the first ever leopard attack on a crocodile.

Espresso on Ice is Not Okay
I'm with the blogger on this one. I can't stand poor customer service and have gone off the deep end a couple times in the past when treated poorly. You regret it later, but sometimes, in the heat of the moment, it drives you a bit nuts. Here's my most ridiculous experience:
Once, I was seeing a movie at the Paramount Theatre in Toronto when the film broke in half and they said it would take 45 minutes to repair. This was the second time in two days it had happened--I... [more]

"Loaded with soul...under control"
"No one told me there would be unremitting noise every Saturday for the rest of my life.”
I'm a renter and before I move to a new place I hang out there, sometimes for a couple hours--in the parks, on the street, asking passers-by if they live there and what they like and dislike about the area. I specifically ask them and the landlord about noise. You spent a million three on an apartment and you didn't go check out the neighborhood? You're a fucking a moron.

Were the BMX bikes fixies?
No, not usually. But the tricks aren't exactly the same. The fixed gear enables the rider to ride backwards and forwards via their own power whereas BMXers are forced to go backwards via physics only (for instance, go forwards, bunnyhop 180 and coast backwards on the transferred energy--or ride up a hill, stop, and then coast down backwards). I'm not saying one is any better than the other, just that they're different. BMX... [more]

Yeah in my day we rode front and back hand brakes or front with a coaster. This was early-mid 80s. Some of the frames I had in those days were GT Performer in 84 or 85, PK Ripper in 84 I think and a Redline before that that I forget the model of.
Flatland was just called Freestyle or street riding back then and there were very few people who were excellent at it--no one was doing anything near what the kids are these days. I think pegs came out in 86 or 87 just as I was... [more]

'Rejected' Dark Knight script
Thanks for the laugh... but I mean, Batman movies? Every one that's been released so far has been shit so it's an odd thing to spoof (though I guess they're really spoofing Bay). The last one had multiple endings (none of them good), multiple bad guys with zero charisma, and a chase that had a 12k pound vehicle driving on a clay roof. Repeatedly people said it was the best of the four released so far. That's not saying much.

if you can't see the difference between a Christopher Nolan film and a Michael Bay film, I don't know what to say to you.
I didn't say that Batman Begins was the same as Michael Bay's films--I said that it's a pretty shit movie just like the previous Batman movies. I quite like Nolan's other films but the things they have going for them (strong characters, rising action, well-shot, and compelling, believable action) are not present in BB.

dobbs are you sure it's a shit film or could it be you just don't like genre films?
Wha? I love genre films. I love any film that's well written. I was at the first midnight screening of BB. It was a snooze fest--if I hadn't been laughing at the ridiculousness of it I'd have fallen asleep.

Could you give an example of a well writen genre film, or just a genre film you think was good. Just curious.
There are gazillions of them. Cat People, Blade Runner, just about any Hitchcock movie, the Kingdom, Miller's Crossing, Unforgiven, the Killing, Easy Rider... Some of the best films ever made are genre films. Hell, Men In Black is a better-written genre film than BB as is Darkman and Buckaroo Banzai. Most will disagree but I'd say Ang Lee (a... [more]

Little blue pills of cheer.
Slap*Happy, of the dozen or so people I know who take SSRIs only one also goes to therapy. The one-two combo of drugs-therapy may be the intention but by no stretch of the imagination is it the practice. How these pills are supposed to be prescribed (with therapy, you seem to be saying) is not how they're marketed. If you don't think it's important or necessary to address the science of the meds the way they're used in the real world... well, then it's a good thing the discussion is going on... [more]

...if waterboarding does not constitute torture, then there is no such thing as torture.
The only way that something like this could be useful is if Rush or O'Reilly were kidnapped and subjected to the same thing. Only then would right wing morons agree that it was torture.
A number of years ago in a great magazine called Gadfly, there was an article by (I think) a soldier of fortune who volunteered his services to kidnap Oliver North and bring him to any country who agreed to charge him with war crimes. To my knowledge, no country agreed. However, perhaps... [more]

Bicycle Lock / Planter - get your bike out of the hall
Yeah, that does seem to be a whopping great flaw in their plan. I mean, who cares how heavy and strong the thing you lock your bike to is when pretty much every commercially available bike lock can be snapped/sawn through/unlocked with a ballpoint pen/&c.?
I think you folks are being pretty ridiculous. Obviously these things are for people who can't bring their bikes inside so they've got to lock it to something. If the lock is cheap, the thief is... [more]

If you lock to the post and they get the ring off, they have your bike.
These thieves aren't removing the ring to get the bikes, they're cutting through them. If you lock to the ring they only have to cut through one thing to get the bike. If you lock to the post they have to cut through both sides of the ring or the substantially larger post. If you look closely at the photo, the left side of the ring even says "Lock your bike to the POST" right on it.
