Blocky 2.
Simple kiddie game with cutesy graphics and annoying sound effects, or addictive puzzle with surprising depth and strategy? Both? Either way, I've played it too often; now it's your turn.

Crates are falling out of the sky.
Push them off the platform. Keep doing it until one of them crushes you. Which it will. Soon.

Massachusetts will retain gay marriage. For now.
The initiative petition which sought to amend the Massachusetts constitution to ban gay marriage (thereby revoking the decision of the Supreme Judicial Court in
Goodridge v. Dept. of Public Health) will not appear on the ballot. The petition needed the votes of fifty legislators in two consecutive constitutional conventions to proceed;
my representative was one of the nine house members who changed their votes from the last time. Thank you, Jim.

Bob Denver,
beloved to millions as the lovable beatnick
Maynard G. Krebs on the early television show
The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis,
has died at age 70.
he was also on a later show about seven stranded castaways

It is the
dead of winter at the
bottom of the
Earth.
Therefore, it's a
great day for some
lucky intrepid foolhardy souls to join
The 300 Club! Those wishing to join in the future are advised to hurry, though.

The long wait is nearly over; tonight, all will be revealed. Who will be
Miss Gothic Massachusetts 2003?
Come watch as they fasten their fingers to their foreheads with a piece of Victorian silk so as not to strain the gossamer skin on their delicate digits of doom.
The Living Need Not Apply.

Pocket Calclulator Show
looks like it started as a sideline of a
shortwave radio show about "products from the electronics revolution of the 1970s and 1980s", but its of primary interest for their collections of classic nerd toys. Thrill to the memories in the
Digital Watch Museum, the
Walkman Museum, the
Boombox Museum, and especially the collection of
Magical Gadgets, which includes a not-so-useful-anymore
cb radio to 8-track adapter, an incredible
casio talking clock/calculator (listen to it talk!), and, of course, that great pioneer of personal sound technology - the
Bone Fone (it vibrates, you know!)

The Folk Den Archive
In November, 1995, Roger McGuinn (yes,
that Roger McGuinn - the same guy, BTW, who was originally
Jim McGuinn) started uploading
original renditions of traditional folk songs for free distribution.
He's been doing it every month ever since. In seven years, he's covered American classics from
"John Henry" to
"Get Along Little Dogies" while also covering the rest of the world in tunes as diverse as
"Finnegan's Wake" and
"Waltzing Matilda". He also puts up an
appropriate holiday song each December. Each song is usually available in a variety of downloads, and is heavily annotated, so if you ever wanted to know the original 1829 lyrics to
"Stewball", this is the place to go.

Like, Omigod! Rhino Records' latest orgy of nostalgia,
The '80s Pop Culture Box,
arrived in stores this week. The package boasts seven disks, 142 songs, and an impressive array of extras, including
liner notes by Jamie Malanowski of Spy magazine, so this may be all that you need to become an instant '80s expert. If the
$99.98 sticker price is too steep for you, and you're
already an expert, though, you can try their
contest for a chance to win a set (and a whole bunch more!) Gag me with a spoon!

Comics are stupid.
Comics are great. In a pair of twinned articles, the venerable
Boston Globe revisits the whole "dumbing-down our culture" thing, that probably first popped up when the first iconoclast decided to use papyrus rather than good ol' stone. Light the bat-signal, Commissioner, my Spidey-sense is tingling!

Whatever Happened to all the Great Kids' Shows?
When my wife was growing up in central Connecticut, she was a big
Sandy Becker fan. (The original host of
Wonderama, also seen
here with a very young Linda Blair). She still remembers the characters he created for his show -
Norton Nork, the
Big Professor, and of course
Hambone. She was naturally pleased to discover
Christopher Gross' excellent site celebrating the popular kid's show host and his show. Even though so much early television has been lost to the ages, the site has accumulated several
video clips, including a few, um,
off-color clips. (Warning - both RealPlayer and a brief dirty word). Now if only someone would give the same treatment to the show
I had growing up -
Foreman Scotty, on channel 4. Sigh.

Of course it's just a coincidence, but ...
I didn't know that this particular bit of pop culture had already been discussed on
Fark, but it certainly freaked me out when one of the guys at the bar showed it to me last night.
(and wait! There's even more to the conspiracy ...)

Jeez, is Gordon Clune a big jerk or what?
After weeks of anticipation (okay, several reminders from my wife), I sat down tonight to watch the first two hours of PBS's
Frontier House. I thought it was
much better than I expected, but I can't keep the doubts away - is this really just an
1883 Survivor?

How well do you know your consumer products? It's a simple concept - you're given the generic name, you type in the brand name. The chance to be listed as a "winner" has long since passed, but it's still embarrassing to see how easy it is to get them all.

When
my brother-in-law and a few of his friends started playing a game they called
Extreme Croquet, they thought they were the only people doing it.
Wrong. Very
wrong. This particular brand of craziness has been going on for a
long time. I have to admit, though, it is
fun.

End of Everything?
Yes, going for the true trifecta, but in a comprehensive way. There's more here about how it all will/might/could end than you can go through in a lifetime, so maybe it won't all ever end after all!
This Week in Failed Apocalyptic Predictions is particularly instructive.

The terrorists have already won. The Lions Club has cancelled their annual Boston Marathon pancake breakfast, due to "fears growing from the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks". No, really.
