When is it OK to point out something that may be...
Yeah, Twiggy you were out of line. Fairly frequently I find myself aghast at the stupidity of some AskMe question. When I find myself rolling my eyes and typing condescending stuff like "Perhaps you're unaware that you're breaking the law?" I huff and puff my way over to my browser's "back" button and move on to another question. Lots of people ask dumb questions in AskMe. It's not your job to call them out on it-- either answer sincerely or keep silent. Think "this... [more]

It's really creepy when people self-link in Ask and act all innocent about it: "Has anyone tried this new drink from Pepsi? It's blue! My wife and I love blue, but we're not sure if we're ready to take this step and start drinking blue soda. Has anyone been through a similar experience? Anecdotes? Advice? Thanks in advance!"
Lame! Ban 'im.

It appears that airnxtz has figured out that he can list laptops on eBay, collect thousands of dollars from naive eBayers, never send them the goods, keep the money, and get off scot free. At least, he's pretty sure he can get off scot free, but he's not 100 percent sure, so he keeps posting insincere questions to AskMe posing as the buyer in the above scenario, to find out if there are any holes in what seems like the perfect scam.

I'll just chime in and say that this phenomenon bugs me too. It's not hard to phrase a succinct, specific question in one or two or three lines. Nobody's complaining that the posts are too short. It's just irritating when someone posts "I have a question about books [MI]", and it makes the search engine less useful too.
When this was brought up before (too lazy to find it), an offender justified it by saying that it added mystery to the question and got more... [more]

Unban Keyser please. (more inside)...
I guess I missed out on the a/s/l check a while back, but I think there are probably plenty of young, intelligent, articulate members who don't make a big fuss about their age. Personally, I found Keyser's repetitive "I'm just a kid, how can I get some money for free to buy some drinks and get out of jail free" shenanigans to be the most irritating thing about 'im. He's an attention-whore. They come in all ages, I'm told. As others have pointed out above, this thread plays right... [more]

No. If the word "war" is in your post, close your browser window before you hit "post." Good posts are stunning things you stumble upon in your web travels that you think the rest of MeFi would really enjoy seeing. If someone wanders by in a year and clicks the link, it would still be interesting. News posts never fit that requirement.

Can we please remember to actually ask the question on the front page and not just make some vague mention of the topic and allude to [more inside]?
I think people are hoping by forcing people to click on the comments to even see the question, they'll get more responses. In actuality, it's freaking irritating. Just ask!

Cryptical Envelopment: It's much more useful to ask your question, briefly, on the front page, and then include further information inside. For example, you could have asked: "Why are Windows Media Video files silent on my OSX Mac?" Which is much better than saying: "Problem with WMV and OSX on Mac regarding audio specifically."
See?

Matt has said that when the new and improved AskMe is launched, there will be a built-in mechanism for More Inside. The posting page will likely include a small field for the question and a larger field for further information which will be placed as the first comment within the thread.
Other promised improvements will include categories, a mechanism to track answered and unanswered questions, and probably more. I'm very excited to see this new and improved non-beta... [more]

A sneak peek into the anony-me slush pile was fun, but much less exciting than I would have imagined. Why would someone ask "what are fun things to do it Pittsburgh" anonymously? Maybe they're cheating on their spouse (who also reads MeFi) with a lover in Pittsburgh while they're supposed to be on business in Seattle...
None of the questions were too-sexy-for-ask. Damn.

Yay, I've been waiting for this. Sooner is better for me, let's do it while everyone still remembers. How about Friday April 16th or Saturday April 17th?

I like Chino Latino, but the food is pricey and the drinks are pricier. I'm imagining someplace with cheap booze, good atmosphere, not too smokey, not too loud, not too crowded, and open to all ages. Wait, we're still talking about the meet-up? I think I've drifted off into a daydream where I'm a regular at Cheers.

The consensus seems to be Black Forest patio, Friday April 30th, 8pm. Friends, lurkers, monkeyfilter members, etc. are all welcome to attend.
Who wants to email Matt to make sure this goes on the sidebar of the main page?

A recent comment about "feeling gypped"...
Refusing to stop using a term that might offend other people because you are 100% sure it doesn't bother YOU one bit is missing the point entirely. I used to say "retard" and "gyp" etc. on a regular basis, but now I don't, not because I developed a problem with the words, but rather because it came to my attention that they are considered derogatory and offensive by others.

I would imagine folks who get banned are only banned from posting comments or links, not from viewing Metafilter alogether. Most likely they receive some kind of harsh email, after which their password no longer works and they can't log in.

As a 14k+ user (creeping up on my 6 month mefi aniversary), I certainly don't feel as if newer members are being ostracized or belittled for sup-par posting activity any more than anybody else.
I can understand the feeling of exasperation upon returning t o the front page after a short absence and seeing it chock full of posts that seem a little bit "off" from the standard MeFi protocol. I also think part of the problem is that when most of us see a post from an older... [more]

Should I be ashamed of my 13k member number?...
Heck, I think higher numbers are cooler.
There are fewer of us in the 14,000's than there are under 1000-- plus since registration is closed, having a 14,000+ user number means we're either super cool or super sneaky/stealthy/smart.
Or all of the above.

I like the idea of being able to see how many users are "active" at any given time, but I'm not sure how useful having a list of who is logged in would be: just because someone is logged in doesn't mean they're reading a certain thread or going to see a certain comment right away.
If you're just curious how many people are lurking around, there's always the stats page...

Thanks for the heads-up. I wonder what effect this will have on the seemingly huge backlog of blogspot blogs that have been abandoned or are very very rarely changed. Maybe this outage will serve as a weeding out of sorts.
