Le réseau
- Starting in the late 19th century, Belgian
Paul Otlet envisioned the basics of a human powered Wikipedia and Google. He created a 12 million item database on index cards and accepted queries via mail or telegraph. The article describes his work and the Mundaneum museum in his honor. Be sure to watch the video. There is a
full documentary on Otlet as well.

- "if this is your first time to
ytcracker.com, allow me to thank you for coming here. i am the self-proclaimed king of true computer nerd rap. i represent the dirty nerdy south and digital gangsters worldwide. after conquering chess clubs across the globe, my mission has been to provide my fellow hackers, spammers, carders, and phreaks something to get down to."
I suggest
f*ck antis about fighting the anti-spammers,
drink more, post more about message board hijinks, and the instrumental techno tune,

Painkillers destroy hearing
- Looks like America's fascination with Vicodin, Oxycotin, and other hardcore painkillers has a lasting effect other than addiction. Studies are showing that "rapid hearing loss, even deafness, in some patients who are misusing the drugs". This is serious enough for Vicodin's manufacturer to add a "warning about the potential for hearing loss to the drug's label."
Is Rush Limbaugh's
sudden deafness and recent involvement in a
painkiller drug investigation simply a coincidence?

Chinese Manned Spaceflight
as early as October. After years of preparation, China appears poised to join America and Russia in manned space efforts. Tons of details at
spacedaily.com. Rumor has it that the goal of the Chinese is a
permanent lunar base and a visit to Mars. Will it take international competition to get the US moving in manned space flight outside of Earth orbit? The
Space Exploration Act of 2003 sits as a bill in Congress, awaiting support. Will children dream of being a
Yuhangyuan (Chinese term for space explorer) instead of an astronaut or cosmonaut?

E3 is this week
- This week, geeks, gamers, booth babes, and movie execs gather in Los Angeles for the
Electronic Entertainment Expo, better known as E3,
the premier video gaming industry convention. As the LA Times reports,
video gaming is a US$10 billion a year industry, pulling in
more money than movie theater box offices. A US$25 billion global industry, video gaming is shaping culture around the world.
Are video games ready to join movies and music as mainstream art forms with game developers reaching celebrity status?

Frontier Psychology
- Does Frontier Psychology drive America in a direction that the rest of the world cannot comprehend? Roughly defined as "
the effort on the part of Americans to come to grips with untamed elements of nature and, by taming them, to reorganize their society" We see it everywhere, even in
Buffy. Europe appears to value stability over mobility and change, in opposition to America.
Prof. Richard Slotkin has written extensively about these concepts. An interiew with
audio clips is here. (Real)
Are America's recent domestic and international policy decisions attempts to tame "untamed elements" around it?

Is Tivo a Cult?
- The New York Times discusses Tivo owners and their propensity to evangelize. What is it about Tivo that turns us into volunteer salesmen? I feel the devotion myself, you'll take away my Tivo when you pry it from my cold, dead fingers...

IM just for Wifi
- Trepia has developed a new method for wifi users to
connect to each other. Imagine turning on your laptop and seeing the other wifi users near your physical location and being able to chat with them.
There's only a Windows client at this time. I asked where the Mac & linux clients were and the CEO told me they were coming in the future once the Windows version takes off. I'm betting that
if enough people ask, they'll accelerate their plans.

Bait and Switch?
(Quicktime Movie) - One of the Mac Faithful at
fury.com makes a funny (but true) statement about the new
.Mac service charge that Apple recently announced. How far can Apple push their core consumer market with this type of thing? In a
News.com report, Apple predicts losing up to
90% of their existing .Mac users. That's some public relations plan. They are indeed thinking differently.

Commish or Capo?
Commissioner of Baseball Bud Selig has been sued under the
RICO Act for wire and mail fraud. The charge stems from his attempt at the
contraction of two teams in Major League Baseball.
Mr. Selig can't seem to get a break from bad publicity. Does he deserve one?

$9,324
The GAO concludes that some 'vandalism' took place in the Clinton to Bush White House transition. The
total repair cost was $9,324. I wonder how much we spent on the GAO investigation and it's
220 page report. I bet it was more than $9,324. (via

Enron cheated California
- The
Los Angeles Times is reporting the discovery of a memo detailing how Enron
manipulated prices by fraud during the power crisis while blaming the problem on powerplants.
One of their strategies was actually called 'Death Star'. Look like the Enron Empire has suffered the same fate as the Palpatine's Empire.

Why the towers fell.
PBS is airing a
special episode of Nova about the science behind while the World Trade Center towers collapse. Nova's reputation for converting esoteric science & engineering into understandable explanations for the layman should make the show something to watch. 7PM EDT/PDT on most PBS stations. Set your Tivos.
