Montaigne's Complete Essays in translation

Which English translation of Montaigne's Complete Essays do you recommend--Donald Frame's or M. A. Screech's? (Also, feel free to recommend another--these are the two I know of.)

Number of Ph.D.s in humanities vs. hard sciences?

Do American institutions of higher education collectively grant more doctorates annually in the arts and humanities than in the "hard" sciences (that is, biology, chemistry, physics, and for this discussion, mathematics)?

Buying a cellphone online

I'm a first-time cellphone buyer and I currently live in a state other than the one where I have a driver's license. Will this affect the area code of my cellphone number? (Keep in mind that I know little or nothing about cellphones.)

Ballpoint pen refill question

Ballpoint pen question: I bought a Parker Jotter 0.7 mm-point refill last month, and after about twenty pages of writing it's already starting to crap out on me--its line is unacceptably light, and sometimes disappears completely. (These refills usually last me a year or more.) Is there anything I can do to save it (soaking the tip in some substance, etc.), or is it a lost cause?

Where to get cheap Moleskine notebooks

I purchased a Moleskine notebook yesterday (previously discussed at length in this MeFi thread), and I have a feeling that it will be the first of many--overblown marketing aside, the design of these things really is excellent. But $11 for a pocket-size notebook is pretty expensive. Where's the cheapest place online to find them? Bulk purchasing is a possibility.

Do Not Pass Go

I'd like advice about how to begin learning how to play the game of go--I'm specifically thinking of recommended introductory texts for the absolute beginner, but anything else useful you have to say is welcome.

Suppose that you're at a party, or wandering down...

Suppose that you're at a party, or wandering down the street in a small town, or in your local coffee shop, and you run across someone you've briefly met before several months ago, but whose name you don't remember. However, he or she remembers yours, and greets you effusively. In this circumstance you'd rather not say, "You'll have to forgive me, but even though you apparently remember me quite well, I don't have a clue what your name is." Is there a way to get the person to say his or her first name to you without you admitting to him or her that you've forgotten it? Assume that there are no other people involved in your conversation, that you have fifteen minutes to get their name from them, and that you have a reasonable ability to direct the conversation topic to whatever subject you wish.

All-you-can-eat

I'm going to Churrascaria Plataforma in NYC in a couple of weeks, an all-you-can-eat Brazilian restaurant that encourages gastronomic excess. What are strategies I can employ to help me consume more food than a person should reasonably eat in a single sitting? (Time isn't a factor, I don't think--it's a fixed-price menu, and I believe you can stay as long as you like.) And is there any Brazilian cuisine that I should try while I'm there?

Super Hard AskMe Challenge! A few years ago, when listening to the low end of the radio dial late one night, I heard an arrangement of all four movements of Rimsky-Korsakov's Scheherezade, performed entirely by two acoustic guitars. I'd very much like to hear it again. Who recorded this, is it available on compact disc, and where can I find it for sale (if at all)?

Is this an April Fool's joke, or not? The New York Times (reg. req.) appears to think that it isn't, but it's on this list of online April Fool's jokes.

I'm planning on spending this coming weekend (February 20-22) in New York City. On the agenda is the MeFi meetup, of course, but some other time that weekend I'd also like to go dancing somewhere. Can anyone recommend a good club, or a DJ that's appearing somewhere? [more inside]
