MeTa post: Can we get a policy regarding the ads on Metafilter?
Oh wah. Just don't buy the pro life schwag. The world is full of people who think differently than you. Perhaps you should get accustomed to it.

MeTa post: Best MeFi conversations?
Most people come here for the conversations. I don't know why people say it's about the links. Maybe it was supposed to be. Or it once was. But it is not, and has not, been all about the links for a long, long time, and people seem disingenuous when they say so.

MeTa post: This is not what AskMe is for.
In fairness, it's an incredibly stupid question. To the point of farce.

MeTa post: LOLMIDGETS
Ermmm when did midget become an offensive word for a class of people? I have such trouble keeping up with the hypersensitivity of the world these days.
posted to MetaTalk by xmutex at 12:34 PM on January 31, 2008
What's the m-word?
posted to MetaTalk by xmutex at 1:20 PM on January 31, 2008
"little people" sounds more patronizing and insulting than midget. It somehow seems to imply that you're not even a total person.

Who wants to continue without tkchrist?
posted to MetaTalk by xmutex at 1:51 PM on January 31, 2008
FWIW, I still routinely meet people that use "midget", "cripple", "oriental", "retard", and, yes the n-word and its many derivatives. Some of them are good people who don't mean anything by it, who genuinely don't want to be using offensive terms.

My lord man newsflash: simply because you find something offensive doesn't therefore mean it's objectively offensive. People and their opinions vary! You, alas, are... [more]

MeTa post: LOLXtians! No - LOLScientologists!
And like I said, the ridicule is mostly directed at Tom Cruise, not religion.

Really this isn't a tenable position. Anyone looking at that thread can see the joke is 50% Scientology and 50% Cruise. Really, maybe more in Scientology's favor. You've got a double standard here, and you might as well just own up to it.

That being said, the cache post was crap.

MeTa post: Fallout from the Givewell affair
I would also like to congratulate (brand new) MeFite Tim Ogden on his new interim position as Board Secretary.

Did you intend this to be as smug as it sounds? Do you think brand new MeFite Tim Ogden is really happy to be in this new position?

MeTa post: Slapping someone in the face a bit too much ...
I just want to know one thing: do people really go to parties and read books?
posted to MetaTalk by xmutex at 11:44 AM on December 19, 2007
I used to, then last year someone told me that was rude. So now I just go and sit around for 10 minutes, walk around with plastered smile for 5, sit for 10, walk for 10, leave. And try to remember to avoid parties.

Stay home if you're so damned special.

Yet for whatever reason, AskMe is full of lay people spouting off about what should only be expert opinions and frequently getting them wrong.

Dude, this is the internet.

Speak for yourself.

Are you saying that is necessarily the case that fat people are attractive? I hope this is not what you are saying.
posted to MetaTalk by xmutex at 4:42 PM on May 22, 2007
I'm saying that there are plenty of attractive people who many might describe as 'fat.'

I refer you to the use of the word 'occasionally' in my original comment.
