Tiny Screens

I was driving around one night a couple of months ago in S.F.'s Mission District, trying to figure out directions to pick up a friend at a book club reading, when the "revolves" variant of the lightbulb joke went through my head and left this lyric

Saint and Kings - Stop Time

Fake-jazz ballad, slightly prurient and hopefully neither too explicit nor plaintive: use only as directed

Pink Saturday

The horns in this bouncy lo-fi surf-garage number? Synthesized. But the off-key backup vocals? They're real.

Can't Spell Undead Without U

Breakups? Hard enough on the living, but harder for zombies.

Mixed Up Zombie

93 Studios' 20-weirdest-zombie-movies-ever-made list (via Large Hearted Boy's tweet) cracked my skull.

I Was Thinking About You (No Technology)

Do you socialize with dozens? Do you feed-read hundreds, friend thousands, and follow tens of thousands? Do you still get shy one-on-one?

The Shape of Water

A friend's Tweet caught my ear. I tried to get it out of my head. It didn't work.

Sitting on Chrome (about:internets)

Because rapping about Easter eggs in browsers, that's normal, right?

It's also about Firefox 3 and Download Day 2008.

Some Other Boy/Girl

Wherein I discover you can lyrically abstract and obscurely rearrange an interpersonal situation, but you can't make it blink.

Pocket Venus

A not-so-tall song about a short, sweet object of desire. Wait, can I try that again?

I Overshot You (Demo)

This one is probably about reiterated obviousnesses and vain hopes regarding poorly plotted relationship trajectories, but what do I know, I just wrote and sung it. Oh, and the guitar tuning was EADGBD, capoed to the fourth fret.

South of the Border

Directions and hearts aren't easy; it's hard to follow one, let alone both at the same time. (The tuning may have been DADF#BE capoed to the second fret.)

Second Ring

Wherein I discover writing a song about kissing off an ex is easier and more satisfying than kissing off an ex.

The Second Longest Night

Previously on MeFi: Novelist Jonathan Lethem wrote several songs for musicians to do with as they wished. One song made me want to try to channel my inner Daryl Hall or "Goodbye Cruel World"-era Elvis Costello.

Through

Started writing it in '91. Finished writing two years later. Figured I'd try it with the melody I remember writing and a spare extra major chord I had lying around. Caution: Trad plink-and-squint guy-and-acoustic-guitar plaint. Use only as directed.

"Borderline/Norwegian Wood"

I'm singing and playing the Reggie Lucas-written hit off Madonna's first album, but I just threw in George Harrison's wistfully lilting lick on the Beatles' "Revolver" classic for fun.
