NYC travel filter: it's kind of a big town, it seems, but I'm sure it has exactly the thing I'm looking for.

Gentlemen, start your engines

Name that movie. I remember seeing a motion stop picture (i.e. with clay figures) as a kid about a guy who wanted to enter a car race with his less than spectacular oldtimer car.

But: does it work?

I found this nifty device: it's a pen that scans text and lets you load it up to your computer.

Visiting Pointe au Baril

Any good (= decent, clean and fairly priced) hotels or B&B's in Pointe au Baril, Ontario CA? If you know of a good place where a lonely traveller might find a meal, it 'd be appreciated too.

Phones with line out?

Inspired by the thread about Audacity. I'm currently recording interviews on my computer through the modem, but the available software is shaky at best. Help me find a telephone with a line out jack!

Brainstorming software?

Via a FPP, I found this: a "Mindjet brainstorming tool" that can be integrated in Word. It seems like a good way of structuring your thoughts , even better than paper (I always seem to mess up the structure). The only downside is the price: is there any freeware that does something similar, that is easy to use and integrate in Word? Thanks.

DMOZ question. I co-run a hobby site (who doesn't, these days?), but it's become quite a valuable resource for said hobby. We submitted it to DMOZ.org (the open directory project) a few times, but we never get an answer, let alone get listed in the relevant category. Our request to be listed is perfectly reasonable, but what does it take to get accepted?

SkypeOut. Just took a credit for 10 $, but the sound quality is markedly worse than the skype-to-skype calls, and also worse than the normal phone. Also, there seems to be a delay in the conversation, which makes it useless for, say, business calls. Any ideas how to remedy this? Or will we have to wait for Skype 0.2?

BiograPhilter. While I eagerly await the publication of volume four of Robert A. Caro's 'The Years of Lyndon Johnson', what other biographies do I have to read of American presidents/politicians? Note: I'm not American, so I don't really care much for the founding fathers, or Abe Lincoln's constitutional worries etc. Also, no partizan bitch books or hagiographies, please. The wielding of raw power is what interests me most.

Good European biographies (De Gaulle, Talleyrand, Churchill) are welcomed as well.

Can anyone recommend a good webmeeting software for webcam-conferencing? There's tons of them out there, but I'd like a freeware one that's capable of handling more than two users at the same time, point-to-point (not via some server, due to lagging issues). iVisit is great, but will only accept two users in freeware version. As an extra challenge, it needs to be compatible with Linux and XP. Go geeks, go!

Recording calls. I sometimes need to record interviews on my computer, and I've been using CallCorder for the last years. Now I've upgraded my system and I was wondering: is there any free software to do this? I need to grab the sound directly from the modem or via TAPI.

I know there's a program called Coaster, but it only works on Apple machines.

Also: is there a way to test if my modem supports voice (if not, I'll have to use my old modem)?

Can anyone show me to a good place to check how many/which sites link to my site?

I tried using link:[mysite] on Google, but it doesn't seem very reliable. Some links of which I've known for months don't even appear, others that still exist disappear, etc.

DVD question: I bought a European release of Frasier, season 1 - complete with subtitles etc. - but it seems like I'll have to buy seasons 2 -10 in the region 1 version.

Region compatibility is not an issue, but I wonder if "closed captioned" means that a DVD is subtitled, meaning: will I be able to get to those subtitles here in Europe, or do I need one of those hearing impaired set top boxes I've heard about (they seem to exist in UK and USA, maybe Canada as well)?

Webmail troubles: my ISP was bought out by another...

Webmail troubles: my ISP was bought out by another ISP and recently my ADSL connection migrated from the one to the other.

For my work, I use a webmail, because they can't or won't make POP mail available for the work account. Since I migrated, it became impossible for me to reply to mails, add new contacts and some other stuff. I can still send entirely new emails, but it's a hassle not to be able to just reply and forget about it.

The webmail works fine from other locations, but not on my partner's laptop, which is sharing my internet connection.

The ISP claims that 'absolutely nothing' changed and it's not their problem. The IT guy at work isn't terribly interested. I think I might convince either of them to act if I know exactly what the problem is. Can somebody crack this for me? Thanks.

I installed a new OS (mmyes, it was M$ W2k) on my computer on a new hard drive. The old system and the new OS now work next to each other, but I have a technical matter that I can't solve. On the old OS (W98), if I say "Shut down", it will also automatically shut down the power of the computer after it shuts down Windows.

The W2k OS doesn't do that, and while it's not a big issue, I have enough of the neurotic in me to want it to work on the W2k as well. Where and how do I make it do that?
