I never understood this "gate" thing when I was an ESL student.

What is a good (the best?) book on Watergate, if I've just finished Rick Perlstein's Nixonland and want to know what happens next? No spoilers please.

Looking for traffic accident details

Is there a way to find out details about a particular traffic accident and death that occurred in New Jersey on May 11? The only additional info I have is the name of the deceased.

Was he a victim of typecasting?

What is the font used for the title in this poster for Being John Malkovich? Details are welcome - light, bold, etc. Thanks.

Three video sketches based on the data from White...

White Glove Tracking visualization Three video sketches based on the data from White Glove Tracking, the locate-Michael-Jackson's-white-glove-in-his-performance-of-Billie-Jean project that was previously seen on MeFi and MeTa. You can see the videos on YouTube or watch the 640x480 QuickTime movies with better quality. I've also linked to preview JPEG snapshots for a quick peek.
1. Slinky (YouTube) (45MB QuickTime) (JPEG preview) highlights the fluidity of Jackson's movements.
2. Stretchy (YouTube) (45MB QuickTime) (JPEG preview) brings to animated life the variety of glove sizes, positions, and contours.
3. Shapely (YouTube) (33MB QuickTime) (JPEG preview) illustrates the prominence of another type of white glove in Jackson's life: the surgical glove.

Split Screen A weblog dedicated to the art of the split screen and multi-layered visuals, as seen in movies, music videos, commercials and other media based on moving images. Video clips are linked to or embedded if they are available. The site isn't new but this month I began to post regularly again. (Still somehow punting on posting about Timecode, though. Soon!) More info on Split Screen.

A collection of monthly calendars made by members...

Wong Kar-Wai calendar A collection of monthly calendars made by members of wongkarwai.net, where each calendar contains visual elements sourced from and inspired by the work of filmmaker Wong Kar-Wai. A new calendar is added at the beginning of every month. Calendars are nice partly because WKW's films are often about time and memories, but mostly because it provides a timeframe and each volunteering artist gets to make something within a month. For 2007, each person will pick one non-WKW director and do a mashup. I made the January 2007 calendar (GIF) featuring WKW and Peter Greenaway, combining 2046 and Prospero's Books.

Good books on post-WW1 / pre-WW2 era?

Recommendations for good books about the aftermath of WW1, the between-wars period, and the buildup to WW2? I'm looking for a good follow-up to Barbara Tuchman's The Guns of August.

British Film Institute Top Ten Poll for 2002 is out. Compiled every 10 years by the folks who publish the Sight and Sound magazine, it asks 145 critics and 108 directors for their top 10 films ever. Both top 10s are filled with the usual suspects - yes, we all know who always wins. It's more interesting to browse the full list of films voted for. Or read the individual top 10s and occasional comments by directors who voted, such as Michael Mann, Jim Jarmusch, and Roger Corman.
