Ask post: Textual Analysis Primer/Examples?
Warren Sack was at my old lab + has done some work in this vein. I lack sleep, so I don't recall well. But text analysis + text vis brought him to mind.

Ask post: Looking for traffic accident details
Thanks. NJ.com isn't returning anything with his name. I did find:

http://www.nj.com/news/index.ssf/accident/

And I've now realized I've asked a slightly wrong question. He passed away on 5/11, but I've no idea if the accident happened on the same day. I had just assumed - without basis.

NJ.com seems to aggregate a bunch of papers.

I don't know which city he was at, only that he was in NJ at the time. I'll check out the 411 services. Thanks.

dhartung - This was just one of several ways that I was trying to get more info. I had sent out email queries, and I was having to wait to call people overseas at a non-crazy hour for them. Searching obits didn't return anything + I guessed that his parents might not use the obits page anyway for cultural reasons. Then I thought that perhaps an accident report on the news or in a police blotter might tell me what city it was in or what hospital he was taken to, and I could try to follow the... [more]

I used to spend a lot of time on the wongkarwai.net forums, and I vaguely remember the tattoo being considered a reference to WKW's 2046. You might register on the forums there + ask, if you're really curious. Some hardcore fans on there could help.

Ask post: Comics or Manga about tournament fighting?
Adding to the manga/anime list: Noritaka. Japanese kid learns kickboxing then fights his way thru a laundry list of other martial arts in various matches.

Maybe too indirect, but Fist of North Star? It's not about a tournament per se, but one plot point over the long term is about proving your supremacy using mystical martial arts.

Clear Records

Starting in '95, during a mini electro revival, Clear released electro-tinged IDM music from several old + new artists. Among them: Plaid, u-Ziq, Reload / Global Communication, Autechre / Gescom, Herbert, As One.

FWIW, Plaid's Android EP was voted EP of the year on the IDM mailing list. Good times.

Ask post: Real life versions of fictional software
John Underkoffler who put together the Minority Report hands-in-the-air-driven user interface (complete with full fictional-but-realistic manual of each gesture and resulting operation which I believe Tom Cruise had to learn) is now part of a company trying to bring it to reality. I forget the name of the company. Not sure if this qualifies as an answer since it is not a finished and released product, but just wanted to throw in the fact that someone is working hard at it.

Ask post: Good books on post-WW1 / pre-WW2 era?
Thanks everyone. Keep them coming if you think of any others.

Re: choosing to skip WW1, ok I'm reconsidering it. I had wanted to jump ahead to end of WW1 because (1) my impression of WW1 from Tuchman and general knowledge is that it was a fairly static if brutal war in trenches wrt Europe, and I wasn't so interested in reading about 4 years of battles without progress; (2) I was more interested in WW2 than WW1, so I was eager to get to WW2 relatively sooner, although I... I finished reading The Kings Depart by Richard M. Watt. A good read. I was surprised that he seemed to go through the Versailles Treaty quite fast (first four breathless chapters plus numerous later references), but later I realized it was because his real interest was what was happening in Germany between the end of fighting and the signing of the treaty. If my focus was just the Treaty, then I might have chosen another book, but this one gave me a good idea of German events + POV during that... [more]

Another update: I finished Richard Evans's The Coming of the Third Reich and Piers Brendon's The Dark Valley: A Panorama of the 1930s.

I had started with the Evans and AJP Taylor's The Origins of the Second World War, but the Taylor one was difficult to understand without generally knowing how the nations marched onto WW2 (it is more of a re-examination than an examination), so I put that aside.

Both the Evans and the Brendon books were terrific.... [more]

Ask post: Graphical data representation
I second suggestions for looking at Information Aesthetics and Visual Complexity. Lots of examples for you to browse.

You didn't mention what kind of data you were seeking to visualize. People could suggest specific techniques or tools here if you posted more details. Or you might email the webmasters of the above 2 blogs with the details about your data. Since they have seen many types of works, they might be able to point you quickly to several good ideas.

So 2 sets of keywords (1 for before and 1 for after), and each keyword has a positive/negative connotation value?

First thing coming to mind is to have a tag cloud for each set.

- Color of tag represents positive/negative value. More positive = bluer;... [more]

Ask post: How do I make it to Spain next June?
I recommend picking hotels that are walkable from/to the festival grounds. I stayed at a hotel that was close but still a cab ride away, and while it wasn't so difficult to find a cab at diff times of day/night, it still would have been easier overall to stay closer.

Not sure if they have changed venues for the big nighttime events, but if they still do it at the big hangar-like space a trainride away from the main festival, be sure to get there early enough. It'll... [more]

Ask post: open source media art website: go!
Comparison charts would indeed be good for experts/newbies who are looking into finding the right toolset. For more in-depth comparisons, charts would be too concise.

So how about interviews with artists who have done stuff with the tools you mentioned like Processing or vvvv? Not so much "tell us about your art and works" per se; sites like we make money not art do this sort of thing well already. Rather, questions should be focused on their relationship to... [more]

Chinese whispers also known as the telephone game. Person A works on something, passes it onto person B who builds on what person A has done, passes it back to person A or onto another person C, and so on.

Coudal has done things like this with Photoshop users, where an image is passed back and forth and stuff gets added, removed, and otherwise remixed. They called it Photoshop tennis.

So you could try to set up something where a Processing user... [more]

I hope to digitize the episodes at some point, but it will not be soon as I'm in the process of setting up a home media server + it will take time. I won't need anything in return for the files.

Re: Juan Valdez Cafe

Here's a nitpick about the free wifi at JVC: they use Sprint and a Nomadix setup, and on Mac OS X + Safari, it causes a popup-like window to appear, displaying the elapsed time you've been online. Not a big deal - except the window keeps stealing focus every minute as it updates its display. Very annoying if you are typing something in another browser window for extended time, and you keep losing focus.

Just a FY nitpicky I.

Artizen Cafe at 12th & E NW is closed and has been replaced by a Cafe Bravo. Not sure if it has free wifi, as it's only open 9am-4pm and already closed. It looks like the replacement happened recently: Cafe Bravo's sign is literally plastered over Artizen's own logo on the awning.

Bola. Fantastic, soaring, intricate electronica. Like a moodier cousin of BoC. Another vote for Elidel. It takes a few days but works fine for me. Plus the non-steroidal quality was important to me. For moisturizing, I've used Cetaphil before, and nowadays I use milder, less sticky Curel.

I'd had eczema for a long time on my hands and the backs of my neck, ears and knees. After several years of heavy flare-ups, it has now quieted down + is limited to the backs of my knees + bits of my hands.

Handsomeboy Technique. You'll like them if you like the Avalanches or the Go! Team. I mentioned them in a previous thread about indie dance music.

Advantage Lucy. More jrock than jpop. Sweet girl vocals and nice melodies, without massive sugary overdose.

Gortuk - Yes I think you're right.

I was suggesting pop/rock bands from Japan that I like, but "jpop" first brings to mind Top 40 people like Amuro Namie, SPEED, all the Tetsuya Komuro projects like Globe, SMAP, Morning Musume.

It's maybe similar to how we use the term "otaku" outside Japan as loosely describing nerdy fanboy/girl, while inside Japan it seems to refer to someone much more... focused and hardcore.
