Detroit Techno
i've always thought of the third wave as claude young, kenny larkin, dan bell, stacey pullen, and a few others. they're after the second wave of carl craig, rob hood, mike banks, mills. of course my favorite hugely underratted second-waver is anthony "shake" shakir.
theo and moodymann could be considered 4th wave producers, though certainly not exactly "techno" :) omar-s is 5th wave at best, having come on the scene only a couple of years ago.... [more]

iPod film fest
iDJ is in fact worse than most CD decks and software such as traktor in that there is no pitch control capability. once numark or some other company somehow integrates that with the iPod, it's a whole different ballgame. iDJ is basically a fancy dock for two iPods.

Forever in debt to your priceless advice
a friend of mine pointed out an odd and sort of sad bit of trivia from rolling stone's top 500 albums feature... it turns out that nevermind sold 7.9 million copies, while green day's dookie hit the 10 million mark.
of course, taking a look at album sales is generally fairly morbidly fascinating. still, i really thought that with the amount i heard and saw 'smells like teen spirit' compared to 'longview' that there'd be no way dookie would have outsold nevermind. i... [more]

Want to pass an unpopular bill then attach it to a popular bill.
jonmc, the proposed legislation doesn't differentiate between raves and club events, art gallery events, or any musical event (where any type of music is being played) that might possibly have one person using an illegal substance. the wording of the legislation is extremely poor, frankly, and your diatribe is disappointingly narrow-sighted, not to mention played-out (much like raves).

College radio vs. CMJ
As a music director at a college station in the late 90s, I was reporting to CMJ, and keeping track of what other stations were reporting. I was incredibly disappointed to see that the charts for my format (the now-defunct - I think - RPM format) from around the country contained all of the same junk that we'd get from the labels that had the dough. Our station and perhaps three others out of hundreds were the only ones who would regularly report music that didn't come from a handful of labels.... [more]

Good design is about selling your wares to the viewer in the most attractive format possible.
hmm is all good design really about selling?
i've been generally turned off by the attitude of the movement against so-called mystery meat navigation for sites that are less about "selling" and more about exploring. (sure, i think you have to evaluate your site's purpose to decide how the design should be done, but i... [more]

well, there is at least some degree of backlash against the electroclash genre, or at the very least some tongue-in-cheek humor.
fischerspooner, and electroclash as a subculture, is about hype moreso than quality music, as is the gigolo record label to which they've signed (not to mention the godawful haven of commercial bilge, ministry of $ound, who recently released a rather timely electro compilation).
people have had no trouble jumping up... [more]
