MeTa post: Mathowie for the win
Also, yeah, murdering your wife when you're 12? Not cool.

Technically, she was his ex-wife at the time — they divorced when he was 9. Not that this excuses anything.

And my Google namesake, for quite a while, was a Nazi war criminal.

So did he get better? Exonerated?

No, he was just displaced from #1 for a while by a music producer from Ohio. He quite recently got extradited back to Italy (where his prison camp was during the war), so it looks like he's back on top of the Google results again.

All right, so April 17 is Goat Day and October 8 is Elephant Day. Are there any others I'm forgetting?

Sorry, I'm skipping down to comment having only read half the thread. What'd I miss?

Not much. Just a bunch of guys who can't be arsed to shave every morning.

Anyone remember when the 'only 10 per day' policy went into effect? Because if it was in place when the users in the comment linked to by voidcontext above were signing up multiple accounts in a row, I think I'm retroactively pissed off.

I was a ten-per-dayer, and I got in after only about a week of trying. This would have been summer of 2002. For comparison, user 13305 joined in December 2001, when I'm pretty sure that only the Sooper Seekrit... [more]

I'm pretty sure I found it through Chris Livingston's blog Not My Desk, back when it was still active. I couldn't join for almost a year, though, since new user sign-ups were closed back then.

White background = white bread. Ordinary and uninspiring, not fitting for colorful Metafilter.

I believe that Mr. Dodger was making a reference to the "professional white background" thread.

MeTa post: People die every day, and so what?
I'm not the only person I've talked to who has remarked on the almost-daily 3+ obit posts on the blue.

Either you're wildly exaggerating or some posts were deleted: before today, the most recent obituary I was able to find in the archives was Tammy Faye Bakker's. That means there were 240 posts (and nine days) between then and Ingmar Bergman's obituary today.

Is this really a pressing problem?

I'm just waiting for someone to post a link to Antonioni's obituary so this thread will flare up again.

Oh, hell no.

MeTa post: endless whining spoilers
Darth Vader is Luke's father. The woman in the "Crying Game" is really a man. Ole Yeller dies. In "Murder on the Orient Express" they all did it. Captain Kirk isn't really dead, he's in the Nexus; but then he dies for real later. On July 4th, we killed all the aliens by giving them a computer virus which took down their shields. Verbal is Kaiser Solteh. The North wins. The Nazi's lose. Tom Cruise screws over the firm and gets away. Jeff Bridges did kill his wife in... [more]

I dunno, this will always be the canonical flameout in my book. But the flamer-outer wasn't the person who started the thread, so perhaps it's not canonical after all.

For a moment, I was logged in as mathowie, and I deleted all of you. But then I woke up and you're still here.

You joke. But back when I first joined there was a strange interaction between the computer system where I work and Metafilter, such that if I switched between various workstations I would find myself logged in as mathowie. Of course, I was too damn boring & responsible to do anything other than report this to Matt.
