Matt is back
I can't get over these videos. I've spent the last several hours reading this thread, the 2005 thread and Matt's site.
Unbelievable, and absolutely wonderful.
Kudos!

I can never figure out what generation I'm supposed to be, being born in 1978 it depends on who you ask. So I figure I'll just hate everyone and play it safe.

The Michel Thomas Language Method
Not to mention, upon listening to both the French and Italian free samples off itunes, the construction "It is not possible for me that way" has come up both times. Those jokes made much more sense after I'd listened to both samples :)

To his credit there was that moment of a lengthy pause where it could have gone either way. I like the first one better, but this one was good too.

Hear and Compare Accents of English from Around the World
I`m from S. Ontario as well, and only just because of this post realized that I do, in fact, pronounce it "melk". It took me more than a few minutes to figure out how else it could be pronounced, until I tried something closer to m"ill"k. That was the best I could figure, and man was it weird sounding.

Oh, and in comparison, the "standard American" accent sounds like every word is a question, which I thought was apparently what Canadians do. Strange.

This is great. Very entertaining. Sometimes I had to squint to see how they came up with the photographic interpretation, but that just made it more fun!

That Canadian mysteries site is fabulous. It's full of transcribed original documents. I just wasted an hour browsing through the Donnelly history.

Trying to look ecofriendly
Being from Guelph, Ontario I always took for granted that tap water tasted good. Really good. In fact, I remember learning in grade school science class that the tap water for Guelph was 98% spring water.
Looks like Nestle Canada discovered that as well.
While on one (somewhat greedy) hand it's nice to pick up my hometown tap water wherever I am in Canada (especially now that I don't live in Guelph), it's also very disturbing to think of this... [more]

His Dark Outrage
My excitement for this movie knows no bounds - although I haven't actually looked at any clips in depth. I'm going into it based on my blind love of the books.
Like many others, I find it interesting that the series is just now being noticed by the Catholic League (although I never saw it as specifically anti-catholic, just anti-religion in general) when it's been around for many years.
Frankly, as a kid who was nominally raised Catholic, and... [more]

Wow, that is so bizarre. The image defaults to counter clockwise for me (which seems doubly bizarre reading the left/right brain info) but I can now get her to change fairly easily by focusing on the foot.

Canadian border guards gone wild
It's not necessarily the fact that the recruits are partying, but there have been photos from facebook sent to the press (not in the CBC article, it seems) that show them drinking heavily while in their uniform. That is a huuuge no no.

Hypey Potter
A little late to the party, but I just have to say that Rowling didn't draw me in with the writing -- even as a children's book it's not that great.
But it's not bad either. As someone (at 29) who thinks youth literature is far better than most adult fiction, it drew me in from the moment someone gave me the first book as a birthday present I turned 21.
That happened just because of the pure entertainment of her story. I think it might have to... [more]

ericb: No, I didn't mean the Indian in The Cupboard (although I have read that too). I capitalized it only because it seemed like a bit of an archetype -- a modern Oliver Twist, if you will.
The boy in the cupboard who is really a wizard is the ultimate in "I wish I were adopted" lore.

Really? Because in the pictures from the first link she appeared to have a skirt on, and in the video just a shirt and underwear.
Seems like stripping to me.
But I guess 8 men stoning a 17 yold to death is better than a hundred?

Fly the Toddler-Free Skies with AirTran!
Ok, maybe this is a stupid point, but I have to bring it up.
There are many of you who advocate driving if you have young children. But what if someone has a toddler and can't drive? Is there a difference if the person is simply unwilling to learn to drive, or actually can't?
I ask only because I am relatively young, and have no children. But I may in the future, and I really physically can't drive. What would someone like me do - never travel?

If we had gotten a Conservative government that tried to roll back gay marriage, I would be looking at relocating. I happen to take my rights seriously.
Agreed. It's bad enough when a government wants to prevent me (as a gay woman) gaining rights, it's a whole other ball game to take away something that's been given. Thankfully the combination of the Lib/NDP/BQ numbers will prevent that.

They all have to look for ways to cooperate - that's the general force behind a minority. I didn't vote NDP on the idea that they would NEVER co-operate, just that they wouldn't on things like abortion or SSM.
I still trust Jack on that.

I fully admit that I am possibly naive, but the idea of any NDP caucus fully or even remotely cooperating with the Alliance is out of my realm of possibility. I choose to believe that in saying "cooperate" Jack meant "pressure" them towards the centre.
It helps me sleep at night to think this, because the day the NDP truly get in bed with the Alliance I move to the Netherlands.
