First of the photojournalists
Nice context for the period samurai movies I've been watching. This is of course later, but similarly bucolic and pre-modern. Nice find!

Your move, Mr Spassky
Quite sad, and kind of pathetic. He was clearly very talented, but so, so troubled. His childhood comment, All I want to do is play chess. Ever. speaks to a deep kind of disturbance, seeking a sense of safety and order in the game, which ultimately fails to provide it, so that at the end of his life he is criticising chess as "mental masturbation".
Gives a strong picture for me of the perils of giftedness and intellect, that no matter how... [more]

Evolution of an artist.
I also liked his candle painting far more than his other work. He should continue in that vein of careful naturalistic observation, IMHO.

Wot, no Gorbachev?
Interesting. I was really impressed by his John Donne illustration when I saw it in the NYT. Helpful to see his other work...

Killer Bean Forever
Impressive that he put in the time for his personal vision, disappointing that it isn't more noteworthy as an end product.

201 Stories by Anton Chekhov
It is nice that they are free and available, but I found Garnett's translation of Karamazov cloyingly unreadable. I'm glad for her role in bringing Russian literature into circulation, but am glad she has been replaced by later translators. My distaste for her work led me much deeper into recognizing the nuances of translation.

No, no, no! Not good.
Good effort, nice try, etc, etc, but not successful.

hot library smut
Wow, nicely done. That second link was worth the price of admission alone. Too bad the book is out of print.

I think the real story is the fact that these ads are from Brazil. I've been told that Brazil has one of the largest per-capita plastic surgery industries in the world...i.e. intense body image scrutiny...i.e. this ad campaign...

Digging in the Back Yard
It's rare that something online literally makes me laugh out loud. Enjoyment, a smile, a smirk, a small chuckle, yes. The last time I laughed this hard was at the "Triumph vs. Star Wars nerds" video a few years ago.
Thanks, Internet :)

You know who else had a moustache?
Yes, that was visually incredible. Really hard, too! Do you think they sculpted the whole terrain, then filmed it stop motion style? Those texture details seemed too real to be rendered. Fun, Incredibles-esque retro feel. :)

Premiere Magazine Folds
I'd like to put in a good word for Empire Magazine. I've been thisclose to coughing up the $12/issue subscription fee. For now, just read it when visiting my friend's house.

Idiocratic Design
This was a nice compliment to watching the film last week. Some of the sight gags, the money for example, were too fast to really take in. Some nice followup laughs.
I agree with some of the earlier sentiments that Idiocracy was enjoyable, if somewhat flawed as a film.

Like Mr. Rogers without the hipness.
This is great, it reminds me of shorts that Sesame Street would show in the early 80's. Their episodes on "How Milk is Bottled" and "How Apple Cider is Made" that still come to mind. Thanks!
