I would like to see the mods add tags to some more posts. Think about this, Jess is a librarian, with an eye towards how to best classify things for easy search. If she were to selectively add tags to posts they would become much easier to find. I sure would not object to having her add tags to any of my posts, rather I would welcome the professional help. I understand where joeclark is coming from, but I think cortex expressed it well, the internet is different than it was in the first years of mefi. There are a bazillion link blogs, many quite good, and good links spread through the tubes of the internets with blazing speed. That was disappointing, although predictable. You walk into someone else's house to rob them and die, too bad for you. You have put someone in fear of their life and if you lose yours over it I will not weep for you. If someone is leaving with the loot, death just does not seem appropriate. Winging them? I think washburn is right in principle. Too many posts lately are poorly crafted with the important link essentially hidden. It does not need to be the first link, but it should be easy to discern. All too often you look to the one link that looks like the important one and it turns out to be some crappy background link to wikipedia. meh.

I don't think anyone should be able to opt out of MeFi mail. That doesn't impose a burden upon them to answer, but they should at least get them. The you have mail indicator could be set up to show unread mail and recent unread mail (which is a feature all email should have - I don't read the spam and can't be bothered to even delete it, so that ruins the unread mail feature. we could fix that here)

I am with missm on this one. When it is regular email the comment is appropriate, and its current use may just be a habitual carryover from before mefimail, as many of us had mail accounts specifically for mefi and didn't check them very often. However, there is a little box in the upper right hand corner of mefi pages that tells you when you have mail. One was more artfully drafted, one generated less intelligent answers, but the dichotomy is real. They are essentially mirror sides of the same question. The real world effects, such as jackass answers in the second question, are real though. Regardless, I think either both should stay or both should go, realizing that if both stay it requires a heavy moderation burden to keep the second question.

The article itself is just silly. Sure, these companies do business with the military, but so what? What bad effects come from that? They are not like defense contractors that get most if not all of their income from the military and are thus motivated to politic etc. on its behalf. The biggest one in the article, Pepsico, did $200 some million in business with the military which is a drop in the bucket compared to their $40 billion in sales.
