Who writes like S. E. Hinton?

Who writes like S. E. Hinton? So, a ten year old boy who is extremely bright, but has pretty much avoided all reading, has just plowed through every S. E. Hinton book at a rapid pace. We would like to continue this new found love of reading but we need some books which will catch his interest.

Crossword creating software

What is the best software for creating crosswords, preferably ones that can be submitted to the New York Times, although I have no allusions here? Price and convenience, plus a good dictionary are concerns. It would also be great if this program is easily used by a ten year old. He is the driver, but I may want to use it myself a few times.

Louis Armstrong music

Help me expand my paltry collection of Louis Armstrong. I have "King Oliver," "Satch Blows the Blues" and the 20th Century Masters "The Best of Louis Armstrong" (and perhaps a few other in the same vein which I cannot locate due to the general disarray in which I store music). However enticing this stuff is, it all represents sort of the big hits stuff. I would like to find some of the more obscure and personable stuff. I just saw this amazing clip at http://www.oxfordamericanmag.com/webextras.cfm. Is there similar stuff on disc with Louis in his prime?

Why did zotob get to take hold?

Wormfilter. Why did so many corporations wait so long to implement the recent updates to Windows 2000? Microsoft released them last Tuesday. As of yesterday many corporations were just implementing them, and by then it was too late and they got hit with the zotob worm.

Is Technorati broken?

Is Technorati broken? I have used it in the past to see who is linking to something, but now it misses even MetaFilter links.

Seattle & Victoria, BC, vacation ideas?

I will shortly be taking a couple of preteen boys to Seattle and Victoria, BC. The weather looks like rain, although probably not all day. Any suggestions on things to do, places to see etc., especially which might interest the boys. I have some familiarity with Seattle, but it has been a few years. I have never been to Victoria and could really use some ideas for there. Also, what kind of documentation do I need to take these days for the boys to enter Canada and more importantly, to get home.

Firefox Bookmarks gone

Just like that, all Firefox bookmarks (several thousand) gone, homepage set back to this. No apparent viruses. Everything else seems fine. History is still there, and no suspicious websites there (JJill?). I have a back-up of bookmarks from many months ago, but would dearly like to get the later version back. Firefox 1.0 (I know, and today another scare.) Any thoughts?

WKCR format change

What is happening at WKCR? Phil Schaap is saying on air that unless they retire immediately the last $350,00 of the $750,000 debt incurred in replacing their transmitter after the 9/11 attacks that the station will change its format from predominately jazz to sports and college rock. What is the source of this controversy and what guarantees the current format if sufficient money is indeed raised during the current fund drive?

How do I synchronize bookmarks between Firefox on...

How do I synchronize bookmarks between Firefox on different computers? I use Firefox on several computers and would like to synchronize the bookmarks between them. If I add a bookmark to one computer (or perhaps 50 bookmarks all over the place) I want to be able to get those new bookmarks into the other computers and in the appropriate folders. When I use the import function it imports every bookmark and folder even if already present. Deletions are not that important, I rarely delete bookmarks.

Firefox question: Why do my cookies for sites such as the Washington Post or New York Times keep disappearing? I can not say for sure, but it seems time related - if I do not visit the site in a few weeks all of a sudden it is asking for my login info. Is there some way to prevent this?

Where were you on 9/11? How did you find out what was happening and what do you remember about that day?

JAG Filter: This article in the New York Times...

JAG Filter: This article in the New York Times (reg. req. and expires soon - see also this article) states the judge in one of the Abu Ghraib cases is contemplating granting immunity to several officers to compel their testimony. This testimony could be helpful to the defendant who is trying to establish that he was acting upon orders from his superiors. I thought the prosecution not the judge decided who would get immunity, that is that immunity was like a contract whereby the prosecution agreed not to use the testimony in exchange for someone waiving their Fifth amendment rights. Any JAG lawyers out there? Do the rules differ about this in military courts?

Regional linguistics filter: Who says...

Regional linguistics filter: Who says "open" the lights rather than "turn on" the lights and where are you (or they) from? In a related vein, who says "make" a party rather than "throw" or "have" a party and where are you (or they) from?

I will be visiting Austin, TX soon and am looking for some fun places to see or fun things to do. Any ideas? Oh, they should also be fun for a seven year old boy.
