there should be a way to keep it from being a special well for posts that are really MeFi posts in disguise ["why is U2 so lame" or "Why won't George Bush learn?"]

Do you roll over user names to check user numbers while reading posts from names that don't sound familiar?

I browse with a GreaseMonkey script that extracts the user number for each comment and displays it in big bold letters before each paragraph.

To avoid the redundant comments problem, I suppose someone could put together a little piece of code (and this would have to be Ajax) which would query the server every few seconds as you were writing a comment, and notify you if there were any new comments posted since you started writing. It could even offer to display them for you.

Maybe a little line below the "Post" button, something like:

Yeah. Cloaked multi-link posts irritate me. Also, posters who try to guide the discussion (what's YOUR favourite X, and why?) really irritate me. So 0/2 on this one for me, but I don't necessarily think that there's anything we can do about it.

I've seen threads with five or six best answers, and given that it's to the user's discretion, I don't think having the same number of checkmarks as best answers is a good idea. I'm usually fine scrolling through the thread, looking for the bright green patch.

I've done a wiki, a gopher server, sold it to Google and Kuro5hin.
