How about at least limiting the word count of each question? There could be an automatic "More Inside" feature when you're typing it in for further explanation/background. That would help keep things from sliding past too fast.

I've wondered about this too - a few people have asked about travel advice for a region I just wrote a guidebook to. I emailed them both, assuming that would be more kosker, but still wondered if it would be OK to say something like "check out my website, it's in my profile" or some such thing...

Friend of mine was someone's "lifeline" a few years ago. She got it wrong (it was about Thomas Jefferson, and we all went to U.Va., and alummi the world over cringed), and he believed her, and got cut.
But Regis did comment on the sexiness of her voice.
Big money, no whammies. Woo!

And yes, I hear (through another contestant friend) that the buzzer is the whole key. Many times you know the answer but the infernal device locks you out for buzzing in too early.

Saw it on a friend's Links bar early 2002. Thought: Whoa! A treasure trove of random, useless, yet often interesting crap! Then: Wait, they're discussing all of it. I have to be a part of this. And after multiple tries, noon-on-the-dot in a Panama City internet cafe, I was...[sigh]

Most of my friends still think I have some sort of special internet voodoo, finding all these stupid/weird/intriguing sites I forward every day. I keep telling them, "Naw, really, it's all from this one site," but they don't listen.
Guess I'll just let em keep thinking I'm cool.

I was talking about sound on the linked site. I listen to music on speakers here at work, and I just though it would be nice for some sort of warning (like "reg req'd") to the effect that "as soon as this new window opens, something will come out of your speakers besides your music."
No biggie.

Reading all the above, it seems like the simplest thing to do by far would be to have deleted posts still show up in the search engine, with some sort of tag that says DELETED.
Searching for "Michael Jackson" and "dangle" (a dangerous combination, granted) now turns up nothing. If the deleted links came up, italicized or somehow marked as "Posted already but zapped, thanks" the problem would (mostly) be nipped in the bud.... [more]

I don't want to create a deleted post graveyard.
So is this the only option what would allow deleted posts to appear in a search? I'm confused.

Good work. We'll probably want to define "dead horse topics," and be clear about what "water cooler conversation starters" are, and why exactly they should be avoided.
On that note, how about links from each bullet point to good examples?

I have little to add except to say that I will be very bummed if this site closes. (Am I the only one here that, from time to time, starts thinking about MeFi, say, in the shower, or over dinner, then thinks Man, that's a little weird? Am I talking out loud?) Since I traded desert canyons for 10 hours a day at a computer, it's one of the main things keeping me sane.
That, and there are few better... [more]
