Ask post: Is chivalry dead?
Chivalry is not in any way related to "how people take it." It's a freakin' code. You don't do it because you are interested in popular opinion. You do it because its a freakin' code.

1. Always hold doors, and car doors for dates.
2. Always give up your seat.
3. Always pull out a chair for a) a significantly older woman; b) a young woman whose affections you believe you have a claim to.
4. Always offer your coat to a... [more]

From some dictionary:

EtymologyMiddle English <>
An ethical code that was prevalent in Medieval Europe. It was the honor code of the knight
Its primary virtues were: Mercy, humility, honor, sacrifice, fear of God, faithfulness, courage, utmost graciousness and courtesy to ladies.

Oh! Snap! Right there at the end! Eat it, chevalerie haters! Some people are polite, and others are chevalerie.... [more]

Codes get updated. Men can chose knighthood. Different political system, different legal system, same spirit. Don't need a horse. Principles and customs are all that is required.

Men will always treat men differently than they treat women. Therefore, there will also be a group of men that value women as group more than men, and therefore will incorporate this valuation into a "code". Don't like it? What's your bench?

Given the choice, many men would much rather impress women than other men. (Maybe you are talking about boys? They often want to impress each other.) This code is not between men, but personal to each man. Women are not the object, they are the valued thing. Women are valued for themselves, not for the sake of impressing men. Ridiculous. And having a code means interpreting guidance, so while there are fundamentalists in every group, don't generalize.

I can't... [more]

Really the problem is that modern feminism is dead.

Let me sum up: Women want to vote, get equal pay, and to chose their social/gender role. Historical Feminism. Then homosexuals, transgenders, cross dressers, women of color, and others join the movement and it becomes a conflicted multi-agenda disaster where no one can agree on what the priorities are. Oh, and every man

Then, a new generation of women grows up having benefited (more or less)... [more]

Ask post: Of the many, many Bible translations available, which is the "best" and most thorough?
There can be only one. The Oxford. It has fantastic footnotes.

Also, read Bishop Spong's Resucing the Bible from Fundamentalism. It is essentially a modern version of Spinoza's discussion of the translation problem.

The Bible is an interesting book. But it isn't for the casual reader.

Also, pretty much no one considers the King James to be accurate. Well, no one that knows anything about translation.

Ask post: How to stop a runaway wife...
I say dump the church. Your relationship with God is between you and God. The church is just a social setting.

Think of it this way: If she was asking you to pick between you and your friends, you'd pick her, right? That's what she's doing. Don't confuse god and church.

I think we've nailed the root of the question:

Is your commitment to your church more or less important than your vow to your spouse?

How we practice faith and where, when, and how we worship, maybe these are more important than a marriage vow.

There are unhealthy churches and unhealthy marriages. It is difficult to know here which one is more unhealthy. "We are an extremely happy couple" and "I love my... [more]

1. Pump and bottle feed to avoid an over hungry baby, a overly frustrated and overfull mom.
2. Check the nose. I've noticed that babies who can't breathe through the nose have trouble eating sometimes.
3. Go to the doctor.
4. Take turns checking 1-2 so that somebody sleeps sometime.

Ask post: Christianity and Liberalism
Focus on Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. That gets you all the way to liberal. Anything involving Paul or the Old Testament will swing you back the other way. Single issue voters are generally unable to handle complexity in religious or moral issues, so they tend to focus on one aspect of one problem.

Here are examples of questions to consider that might help you if you are focused on Jesus rather than the bible as a whole:

1. How does Jesus... [more]

Christ didn't give direction to the church as much as he gave direction to individuals. He gave no direction at all to government.

So anyone who thinks government or church should be focused on following Jesus is missing it. These institutions should not be centralized authorities for implementing god's will as both religious conservatives and social conservatives would like. These should be service organizations with regard to morality, more akin to moral thrift... [more]

I'm pretty sure that Jesus would want to see the science behind the claim that cells=people, and there really isn't any.

I'm also pretty sure that he would be concerned with the claim that brain dead people are alive.

He was, after all, a very well educated person.

Do not let ignorance get in the way of you doing 400 push ups in a row.

Push ups are the solution to your problem. The military uses a variety of push up techniques to really build strength. Ignore wingnuts who tell you otherwise.

And get your protein.

Ask post: What do you think about Kansans?
1. Poor. 2. Ineffective educational institutions. 3. Republican. 4. Rural. 5. Politically dominated by wealthy and therefore corrupt.

Why not ask - who moves out of Kansas? They know who leaves. What does this say about who stays?
posted to Ask Metafilter by ewkpates at 4:57 AM on September 19, 2008

jluce50 has put a finger on one of the central problems: confirming "all the worst stereotypes" while simultaneously suggesting that our concerns about them say more about us than about Kansas.

Ask post: Mum thinks it's OK to sub-contract childcare - what do you think?
No one can substitute for a loving relative.

Ask that she not do this until the child is a little older. Explain that it causes you to worry so much that it is distracting you from everything else.

Mayor Curley is not the one you should be going to for childcare of any kind. Anyone who needs to get rid of a sick horse should send it that way.

Shoes can be expensive if you are shopping for a look... but shoes can also be expensive because cushioning ain't cheap. Replace every three months or 3k miles. Injury is not a trivial matter.

Godel will get his, mark my words. Einstein will get his first though, because physics has always been more popular than philosophy... probably on account of how we like to see things fly through the air.

But they are both wrong, big time. No incompleteness, no relativity.

The moral: Don't be afraid to be skeptical. If Newton can be wrong, then hell, anyone can be wrong. And there is no such thing as zero.

Ask post: What's the current state of thought regarding symbolism within psychological analysis?
With a little less respect, I make these two points:

1. Meaning in the brain is association between a sound and another sensory object. The mechanics of that process can be tested by asking people to pick up a "hammer" out of a group of objects. No need to pry open the brain there.

What does a hammer symbolize in dreams? Anything you like. There is no evidence that a hammer represents anything. There is no evidence that anything... [more]

If he doesn't give you what you want, then you may need to ask more clearly. Sure, support should come from the heart... but men aren't mind readers.

You should try making a plan for him to follow when you are in "crisis" mode, and then discuss the plan with him.

If you set a goal for your bank to give the customer 100% satisfaction with every transaction...

If you set a goal for your staff to give the customer the best deal anywhere... "we'll match what any bank can do for you..."

Customers want service. They want someone to help them, not someone to charge them fees, ask them to fill out forms, and stick it to them when there is a problem.
