Secret Pentagon report warns climate change
hey troutfishing.
Ever consider the possibilty of salt use in the wintertime propping up haline circulation? I haven't tried a calculation but am guessing the amounts would be way too small. Just a thought.

Some of the results from the geographic literacy survey are pretty amazing, like 1 in 5 people being albe to locate Sweden. Also, why aren't each of the self-locations 100%? There is usually only one option on the right continent...

Operation Hero Miles
Why don't the airlines just donate their empty seats?
The airlines are mostly still in a good bit of trouble from reduced passenger traffic. A good moneymaker is to charge much-inflated last minute fares to people traveling on short notice to funerals. I assume the same good will applies here.

Picture Hunt time!
What the fuck is the white house doing photoshopping press releases?! And with lesser quality than a centrally planned photoshop department, for shame.

Decrypt and Enjoy
First letter of word : other letters :: 0 : 1 doesn't seem to work with/without punctuation, backwards/forwards, original sequence/verse, or any combination of these for the 00001-11010-->A-Z system. ASCII looked good until i got the End of Transmit value.

This comes from reading Quicksilver and biased I Ching.
Will our fearless leader Matt play along? He's swell.
Hoping you pick up the beat, Quonsar. So cute.

Yeah, I too will be disappointed if this is it... I mean I thought the reason it was so incoherent was because ed had to match a binary code or something; if not, well...

How bad is it really in Iraq?
from the article you linked Alison:
Agents of the Bureau of Immigration and Customs (ICE) said that so far they have photos and documentation to confirm only 38 items from the museum are still missing. Although they suspect additional pieces may have been stolen, they declined to speculate on the scope of the additional uncatalogued items that may have been looted.

Alien Invasion!
The problem with invasive species is that they are put into a new environment without any of their old predators and diseases. Therefore they thrive and they "outcompete" the native species because of an artificial advantage.
It really comes down to idosyncracies in the environment that the species is introduced to whether it becomes a problem, not such a sure thing as you think. Many ecosystems are robust enough to resist invaders, this... [more]

If our allies don't like ... thy better learn to like it pronto!
Ignatius: I am incredulous of the cool implementation of the radical ideas outlined in PNAC. The level of political sophistication and journallistic spin achieved is amazing, to obtain such broad-based support for ideas either immoral or detrimental to their supporters. Now, how can we use these superpowers for good?!

When will you guys wake up & smell the new coffee. When the next election is stolen?
IMHO the GOP is going to legitimately win in 2004. As Winston Churchill (maybe) said, the most compelling argument against democracy is a five minute conversation with the average voter.

The Palm
Amazing as it is, apparently there are only 4 PalmFacts.
Seriously though, I think this sort of visual symbol of excessive wealth is a suprising window into international finance; it gives you a view through the other end of the gas pump. Perhaps their benefactors will be gracious enough to raise the sea level just enough to dampen everyones enthusiasm?

What if oil was traded in euros?
Mark Doner -
1. The US doesn't just print money when it needs to buy things. Last I checked, the inflation rate was very low.
3. The US has a trade deficit, which means more dollars leave the US than come back into it -- it is 'losing' money on international trade, not 'making' money.
The idea is that these two combine to benefit the US; dollars are printed to buy things overseas, and inflation is low because these... [more]

Dollars are transferred overseas (physically or otherwise) to procure goods and services, supply drops at home. The money stays abroad where it is amassed or circulated. In response to increased domestic demand, the central bank (I admit you've got me there) increases lending, based on national collateral, to major banks which then circulate the money (physically or otherwise) into the economy. Bottom line is an unchanged domestic money resevoir and a net increase in capital.... [more]

Nike flotsam
This happened a few years ago in much the same place, with the "benefit" of a slew of nikes washing up onshore on Vancouver Island. Minus the amusing side effect of a brisk size trading marketplace in remote areas, this mostly just means a bunch more trash on the beach. With container ships working on the probablility of most of their high-stacked loads like this arrving safely, flotsam and jetsam fluxes on the coast are here to stay. Blows: nicest part of the world, IMHO.
