MeFi post: Anthrax suspect kills himself ahead of arrest
This is an interesting recounting of the probe until recently by Brad Garret, one of the main agents involved.

You know, this blue/white collar digression is misplaced. The real class division in this story is the scientists who (the theory goes, whether Hatfill or Ivins or whoever) wanted to scare people straight about the anthrax danger, and the postal workers and hospital staffer who died because the stuff leaked through envelopes. No one at the networks or Capitol Hill died after all, just the guys who handled their mail.

MeFi post: Information Design + Politics = WIN! (Hopefully)
This is such an obvious media opportunity - play your cards even halfway right and you should be all over TV all day Monday. It's quirky *and* feel good! Do you have anyone around who understands how to manage press?

I agree about the weird silence - especially with the Netroots thing going on this weekend.

I have to agree. It's mystifying.

Here's the LA Times story.

He's close to 100k.

My favorite line is at the end:

"Tevis sheepishly broke the news to his mother last week that she needed to step in front of a camera: Four people so far have given enough to get the DVD."

Here's the WSJ story. If possible, they missed the point even more: no mention, unless I missed it, of the smallness of the average donation and how micro-donations can add up fast. Funny, since the Journal is supposed to be more obsessed with finance than politics.
But Sean got one of those iconic WSJ engravings, so it's all good.

MeFi post: Anger can make a man verbose
Coren is my new hero. I have to deal with dribbling, knuckle-dragging morons changing my copy all the time but I don't get to complain like this. (Like the guy who didn't know regimen was a word and corrected it to "regime." Sheesh.) Go Coren!

I've got a story in the paper today with a picture that's captioned, "seen here with a cache of weapons and a Teflon vest."

I feel your pain. At least they didn't change "cache" to "catch." I've seen that.

MeFi post: Escaping the Amish
In ten years, the Amish will have cell phones

Dude, they use cell phones now and have been for at least ten years. At least many of the Amish I spoke to in Lancaster do. No wires, you see.

Here's a nearly decade old Wired article about it.

They also don't drive cars (obviously - buggies) but will bum a ride whenever possible. Total mooches.

I really don't want to have to defend the Amish, because I'm not big on religion in general or clannish modern-reality-denying sects in particular (hiya Hassids!), and I get that you are going to be stubbornly over the top on this, but you can't really attack them for being too rigid and also not rigid enough.
Plus, when those ten little... [more]

The comments are almost the best part, especially from the older folk:

Oh yes. . . it was the late 30’s . . . can’t believe it . . . and I was a child on the subway with my Mom. The trip was total adventure from Lafayette and Clinton to 34th Street - down the stairs, under the turnstyle, watching the people, feeling the scratchy woven seats, whoshing through the underground tunnels, the long ride up the escalator and my small self with tiny white gloves and... "The two big mistakes were the belief in a sky god - that there's a man in the sky with 10 things he doesn't want you to do and you'll burn for a long time if you do them - and private property, which I think is at the core of our failure as a species. That's the source of my indignations, my dissatisfactions, however it comes out on the stage. I feel betrayed by the people I'm part of, these creatures, these magnificent creatures."

Obama will certainly give something as poetic and inspiring as the "Ask Not" speech. He's just that good.

In case you hadn't heard yet, I'm going to repeat this because I think it illustrates the way cosmic forces of history and destiny seem to be swirling around this guy:

I cannot think of a single Clinton speech that stands out in any way as memorable.

I felt tremendous excitement in 1992 when it looked like a smart fresh young face was going to replace a tired, old and embarrassingly stupid Bush. But I don't really remember one specific speech from that campaign.
However, Clinton's speech after the OKC bombing, which at the time seemed to be one of the most horrifying things that could happen... [more]
