deleted...why?
I love all things politics and I would have nuked this with extreme prejudice.
It's primarily about the links, not the chat, nevar forget.

All time favorite comment?
Oh please. No contest:
Stan Chin's reaction to Scarabic's bloodless and bloody minded dissection of exactly how to get rid of a body.
No contest at all.

Wondrous though scarabic's comment is, it only attains true greatness when you read on to Stan Chin's rejoinder.
Indeed.
As a major opponent of jokes and off topic remarks in AskMe, I don't know what to make of the fact that the comment would have been deleted nowadays. And I seriously think it's the best thing on the internet.

It was the best of times, period.
Not to be morbid or ruin the party, but a friend of mine was killed in a car crash last week and I *wish* they would take down his Facebook page. I guess that just before he died, he must have sent out a bunch of friend invites to people who don't check the site much. Because every day, he's there in my news feed "Rich and so and so are now friends." His page lists "activity" every day. It's almost unbearable. Have they come up with protocols or etiquette to deal with death... [more]

No, I get that the profiles become memorials and that's touching and so on. I was just talking about the inherant creepiness of the days right after the death, when residual "activity" makes it seem like the person is still alive and using the site. When I said I wished they would take down his profile, I didn't really mean they should take down all dead people's profiles, just that I personally found it eerie and sad.

Okay so I missed Lola's BBQ meetup because of a last minute thing so will try to make this one....maybe you guys could pick a post-park bar? (I would suggest the Dublin House on 79th, generally my UWS saloon of choice, but maybe too divey for the young'uns?)

Can we get him to wear a fedora? And I speak as one who loves fedoras and thinks he would look hot in one, especially being all sleekly actobatic and shit.

I'm serious about New Orleans. This time of year, hostelries of all kinds are cheap and there are lots of flights. $2 well drinks are easy to find and the music is just as awesome. Also, us merkins can no longer afford to leave our shores.

That's why the hotels are cheap!
(Actually, I just got back and NYC is much worse. Maybe I hit a nice week but it wasn't even close to the humid nightmare I expected.)

Do I have to wear the mini-umbrella hat AND the fedora? That might be a bit much.
Then again, depending on what Zephyrial puts in his brownies, I could be persuaded.

I think from now on we should always have a backup if something is planned for outside.
Or, you know, stick to murky bars and forgo frolicking in the fresh air altogether....

I liked the story because of the simple and satisfying "fuck you" from some WWII vets to people attempting to disparage or disprove Obama's great-uncle helping to liberate a death camp.
(Interestingly, I had googled the liberation of that camp just a little while ago because of a Mefi comment allkindsoftime made.)... [more]

Maybe if there were quote marks around "please crawl back under the rock you came from" it would have been clearer that it wasn't total editorializing?

Before you guys go labeling this a newsfilter, one of the reasons I liked the post is that it was a minor internet kerfuffle that I'm sure I won't see anywhere else. The fact that it was minor I guess supports deletion, but it was just a nice little "feisty WWII vet flips off would-be swiftboater" vignette that I wouldn't have seen otherwise. And I thought the discussion was pretty interesting, not really howling.
But I don't care enough to keep bitching about it. Gaymover.

Christ I hate to argue with Jess, but:
We do a disservice to the issues that really matter in this campaign and in politics in general when we act like this sort of thing is the pivotal moment in this whole larger campaign.
Except that, you know, these things often are the pivotal moments.

Do you really think the press would have ignored Hillary's comment if Drudge hadn't headlined it? He linked to a New York Post story and other outlets were preparing stories too. I'm not going to disagree that Drudge has an outsize influence, but it's foolish to dismiss this growing flap as merely a creation of his.

From a purely useful point of view, I think this question about moving advice and mistakes to avoid is my best contribution to humanity. I learned a lot.
And this question about Chinese chicken dishes taught me an amazing new cooking technique: "velveting."
This question about the ethics of stealing wireless internet was a fascinating discussion and ended up giving me the rationale I've... [more]

I objected to the ikkyu2 comment deletion because his was the only one I saw that answered the question from the point of view of a potential client and I thought that perspective was interesting and valuable. His comment wasn't even as mean as you would think. (caddis, however, seems to be able to pass judgement and characterize it without even having read it: neat trick!)
Ultimately though, I have to agree the only people who should really have answered that question were those... [more]
