Calling all chefs: How can I "shred" raw chicken to re-create the spicy shredded chicken from my local Sichuan joints? Is it just a matter of slicing the breast into thin matchsticks? That sounds arduous and also sounds like it would produce stiff strips of chicken instead of the tender floppy shreds I'm trying to copy.

Travel prices question. I might have to take a sudden trip to Europe and the cheapest last minute airfares were all over $1,500. But there are also many hotel + flight package deals advertised for the same price or even less. How can this be? And as I've never done the package thing, is it a good way to go? Any hidden pitfalls?

Futon mattress alternatives? I have a lovely futon frame with a nasty lumpy old futon mattress. I'd like to get rid of the mattress and keep the frame, using it with my air mattress for overnight guests. Does anyone make sofa-type cushions that I could put on the frame to make it more of a couch? Could I make them myself? (+)

Homeless shelters/charities in DC? I have a gazillion little hotel shampoos and lotions as well as some other unused regular toiletries I'd like to get rid off. Rather than chuck them or leave them in the lobby for my neighbors, I'm thinking a shelter for women might want them. Any recommendations? Googling brings up several but I have no idea which to choose.
