"The Neighbors don’t know they are being photographed"

Photographer Arne Svenson has sparked a bit of controversy with his recent show "The Neighbors," about which he says, "I turned to the residents of a glass-walled apartment building across the street from my NYC studio. The Neighbors don’t know they are being photographed; I carefully shoot from the shadows of my home into theirs. I am not unlike the birder, quietly waiting for hours, watching for the flutter of a hand or the movement of a curtain as an indication that there is life within."

Dog training snags

I have some problems with a couple of dog training efforts: discouraging snapping at treats (but she doesn't always snap), and how to train "drop it," when she's not typically interested in holding something in her mouth to drop. I'd love some ideas on these two problems.

Slip Sliding Away

The Englishman and the eel is a photo essay of 93 images (thumbnails here; 2 pages) and article by London photographer Stuart Freedman that "attempts to look at (amongst other things) the significance and the decline of the eel and its fading from the changing London consciousness" with snapshots of "those palaces of Cockney culture, the Pie and Mash shops."

Microplane, yay or nay? And (warning: pun ahead) grate uses?

Should I buy a Microplane? I'm hesitating because $$ (looking at this one), and a small kitchen means I try to keep gadgets strictly to a minimum. Is it worth it, and what are the things you use your Microplane for?

Undressing But Never Bare

"Outcasts are my kind, they try harder. From strip joints to Burlesque theaters, I went on a quest and met the 'Legends', these dominating characters of the quintessential American art of strip tease. Hours of confidence on tapes, intimate photo sessions, they peel off and reveal the hidden layers of their life with throaty emotion. Their memories reflecting the memories of the land. Vietnam vets and bikers are their loyal patrons..." The Living Art Of Risqué, a photo essay from Marie Baronnet, features portraits of former strippers aged 60 to 95, accompanied by short bio-vignettes in their own words. [NSFW; nudity]

Pandora bracelets for my nieces, or ...?

Silver Pandora bracelets for teen nieces: Great idea, or old fogie fail? The girls are 14 and 16, in the US. Would this be something cool for them, or is there a new hotness along these lines that would more appreciated? (I'm working from thousands of miles, a different continent – and quite a few decades – away!)

"...it's better to look at the sky than live there. Such an empty place; so vague."

"Truman told Jack that he was frankly surprised that anyone who knew him well did not immediately recognize the inspiration behind Holly Golightly. And yet, everyone seems to agree that the true identity of Holly Golightly, nee Lula Mae Barnes, is a great mystery, and that her true inspiration can never be known. Well, that was yesterday, this is today. I’m here to clear that up. Spoiler: it was Truman’s mom. Mystery solved. Let’s break this down and find all the parallels between the two, if their virtually identical birth names were not enough." Need a smallish office chair solution for limited space

I'd like ideas or recommendations for an office chair that doesn't hurt, with special decorating/space/shopping concerns. Complication: in Greece. After five+ years of computing from my kitchen table while sitting in a regular straight-backed wooden kitchen chair, I find the urgent need to move my workspace ... and get a chair that doesn't assault my back and legs. But it's tricky, because space is limited and many of the usual chair recommendations may not be available. Too many pix and way too much info inside.

Jade plant rescue advice?

What should I do with this Jade Plant rescue? I noticed it in the outdoor planter of an abandoned house and grabbed it. It's about 11" tall, and was under a bit of an overhang, so has been pretty much completely starved of water for yoinks. The leaves are all pretty much gray, deflated and leathery, except the very newest baby leaves (which seem extremely new -- but there aren't very many of the new ones). It came out with a bit of a root system, so I think it will be fine to replant, but should I prune it way back? Way, way back? Or leave the limbs but prune them? Or just it let it be to do as it will?

Dream Pictures: hand-tinted glass travelogue slides by Branson DeCou

Moscow of 1931 is a collection of hand-tinted lantern slides by Branson DeCou, an American photographer and travelogue lecturer who traveled the world for 30 years before his death in 1941. You can view more of the DeCou corpus online at the Branson Decou Archive at the University of California, Santa Cruz where they've been attempting to sort, preserve, identify and digitize 10,000 DeCou slides received in 1971, a gift referred to the university chancellor by photographer Ansel Adams.

A psychopathology of unconscious gesture in search of a purpose

"The Secret Gestural Prehistory of Mobile Devices is cultural anthropology. It seeks to recover those moments of intuitive prehensile dexterity, when the famous and the ordinary alike felt the unconscious desire to occupy their hands for an as yet unknown purpose. Like Roy Neary's obsession with the image of Devil's Tower in Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977), this gesture was vague, uncanny and compelling. It is the intimation in images of a gestural second nature to come."

Lump on the pup: what do I need to be researching?

While I wait to hear results from a needle aspiration... what can you tell me about scary doggy lumps, in your experience? After getting our dog her radical spring haircut we discovered a lump, between marble and walnut-sized, on her upper front left leg, about midway above the joint, on the front of the leg. It's movable (moves around under finger pressure/movement), and doesn't seem to cause her any pain or warrant her attention at all.

Subway Surprise, Tehran

"Things didn’t happen as I imagined. On the one hand, with the situation in Tehran, I expected the police to arrest me. I also thought that the resulting dress wouldn’t be aesthetically pleasing to the eye. But it turned out to be more homogenous than I envisaged. Most of the passengers wanted to communicate with me and participate in the project. And I enjoyed this attention and collaboration. The point wasn’t their understanding of the project. I didn’t want anything to be imposed on the audience or participants. I wanted ordinary people to encounter their own personalities without any preconceptions about contemporary art. More than anything, I wanted something to emerge that is shared — between me and everyday metro passengers." The story of fashion student Shirin Abedinirad who conceived and carried out an unusual (and unusually bold) performance art experiment by asking Tehran metro passengers to donate their rubbish to pin on her dress.

I want to go to a book to find a library

All great libraries have books in them, but how many great books have libraries in them? I just finished reading "Big Machine" by Victor Lavalle, and am currently reading "Kafka on the Shore" by Haruki Murakami (yes, finally!), and it's purely coincidental, but they both happen to feature libraries prominently. So now I'd like to know what other really good novels feature libraries in a significant way.

I am not an adventurer by choice but by fate: Bundt Cake Version

Somebody left a crazy old battered aluminum bundt cake pan on my doorstep, all neatly packaged and wrapped and tied up with li'l ol' lady knots. I'm a Aeroputz and need magical solution for mildew smell on rubber

You guys are my last hope: is there anything I can do to remove the mildew smell from my Aeropress plunger? It turns out I accidentally put the Aeropress away without removing the used coffee "puck" first — and it stayed that way for weeks. Of course, the rubber end of the plunger has a mildew smell, which seems invincible. We removed the rubber bit and I've tried covering it with baking soda, soaking it in vinegar, soaking it in vinegar and soda, soaking in dilute bleach, and then dilute peroxide. THEN... my husband sanded down the rubber end a bit, and I tried it all over again, to no avail.

this petty-bourgeois uptightness, this terror of not being in control, this schoolboy desire to boast and to shock

The 2010 Booker longlist is out, and it seems that most of the buzz in the UK is about who's not on the list. The Guardian article "Amis-free Booker prize longlist promises to 'entertain and provoke'" introducing the list of 13 nominees actually devotes its headline, subhead, and most of the first four paragraphs to the subject of who's missing in action: Amis, McEwan, Rushdie. Elsewhere in the Guardian Books section, research professor Gabriel Josipovici pulls no punches in including these (former?) darlings of the glitterati in his assertion that Feted British authors are limited, arrogant and self-satisfied, compares them to "prep-school boys showing off," calls them "virtually indistinguishable from one another in scope and ambition," and muses that the fact that they have won so many awards is "a mystery."

Names for Black Dogs? Let's give them a leg-up in the adoption process.

I need great, imaginative, appealing names for black dogs! A friend operates a rescue organization for dogs and cats, and mentioned how hard it is to find homes for black dogs (see Black Dog Syndrome)... and since I was already helping her come up with names, I thought I'd come up with a special list of Black Dog names that are perhaps evocative of personality types, and that might inspire interest so that potential adopters will maybe find their curiosity/sense of whimsy piqued and stop to at least read a description on the website, instead of just passing by any photo of a black dog. Some specific considerations inside...

Viva quien vence... but, still...

I'm wondering if we should add a "History" category to Ask Me? I posted this today, and was surprised to find that we don't have this category choice. I wavered between "Grab Bag" and "Society and Culture" and finally went with the latter, though my impression of that category is that it's meant to address quite different, mostly contemporary questions... and checking past questions seems to affirm that it's not a great fit, though probably the best we have.
