Yeah, I'm not sure how many actually watched the video that is the post link, but I definitely didn't see anything in there that would prompt the "I worry that people are overprescribing hormones and hormone blockers" line of argument; this doctor was being very cautious.
People who know more should correct me, but it's my understanding that body dysmorphic disorder that might be expressed as gender dysphoria is treatable with psychotherapy and (but not... [more]

Old photographs of Greece, taken between 1903 and 1920
Here's a contemporary photo of the same block of Ermou Street as seen in #6, "Athens, Ermou 1920" [pic from here]. I really like that the cities here build around and preserve the old churches. (Info on the Church of Panaghia Kapnikarea seen in these images.)
Here's a tiny little chapel on Mitropoleos Street, close to Ermou Street, that has been preserved under a large office building. Interesting info on the chapel here.... [more]

Mooseheart
Kubrick sold his first photo to Look when he was only 17, and was hired by the magazine a few months later. Some of his NYC photos for Look.
I do find the Mooseheart photo incredibly touching, especially looking at the large version in which the expressions on the childrens' faces each seem to tell a tiny tale of their feelings at that moment. I wish I could see the other photos he took for that story.... [more]

"The Neighbors don’t know they are being photographed"
nathancaswell, the beginning of that quote explains that the telephoto lens originally belonged to a friend: "'Through the death of a birding friend I obtained his telephoto lens,' Svenson writes on his website. 'Having no interest in birds, I turned to the residents of a glass-walled apartment building across the street from my NYC studio.'"
So he connects it that way, though I still wouldn't disagree that it is a dumb equivalence.

It's okay to have a discussion about art and privacy that is not the same discussion as government surveillance.
A couple of things I noted about "The Neighbors" is that it looks like the gallery and the artist's web site have deleted the earlier text about the show that seemed to deliberately and specifically play up the voyeur/stalker/creepy angle and substituted a much more anodyne description that refers to the work as "social documentation," a... Star Wars Kid breaks 10-year silence
This guy was my next-door neighbor. Not literally, but yeah – same general age, same look, same dorky enthusiasm. Different era; we played Batman. We had a treehouse in an old apple tree where we kept our comic books, and arrowheads, and seaglass, rusty old keys and pottery shards and whatever other treasure loot we could (literally) dig up. And one of these things that we practiced "cracking." We ate sour apples off the tree and Butterfinger candy bars. We wore capes. We fought... [more]

Income Inequality’s Relationship to Violence
One of the authors of the second link in the article (to paywalled study) has a similar paper here (pdf) that might be helpful. The linked paper was from 2002, and this one is from 2004. The author, Anke Hoeffler, is associated with the Centre for the Study of African Economics.

Boston in lockdown as hunt for marathon bombers unfolds
I'd like to ask something about the events timeline, if anyone knows (here on the other side of the pond, I wake up to over a thousand new comments, so I might have missed this): all the controlled (or uncontrolled?) detonations that were happening – were these just various unidentified items that might have possibly been bombs? Or do we know if there were actual explosive devices planted beyond the marathon itself?
Also, has their activity at MIT ever been... [more]

[It's okay to talk about philosophical/sociological aspects now that there's really not that much news streaming in, better if it's more closely related to this event, and much worse when it's just squabbling about what's okay to talk about. If we have to open a Metatalk to discuss that, we will, but it would be much cooler if people would all be a little flexible here.]

I figured they were worried about more devices, and needed to a) keep large contained vulnerable groups (schools, transit, etc.) safe, b) look and see if they could find more bombs, and c) try to get the guys to see if they would say if there were more devices.

Here's a longer version of that house raid video, though I have no idea if it's from the original uploader (we need something like TinEye, but for video, and searchable by newest/oldest). There's another 6 or 7 minutes on the end of it that show the police dispersing, the residents returning, some of the neighbors venturing out briefly... and somebody hugs the dog! I'm not sure it tells us much more, but it does look like the cops don't go to the very next house (I don't think), or the house... [more]

Explosions at Boston Marathon Finish Line
Just a reminder that there's a Metatalk thread that might be a better place for discussing the Meta stuff about how many users/comments etc. on the site.
The Mother Jones article linked above doesn't have gruesome images in the photo/videos, btw, for those who are trying to avoid that, though you won't want to follow the link to the Atlantic in the first paragraph. Massive earthquake in Balochistan
I've been keeping an eye on Aljazeera especially to try to keep up with any news or updates on this, and it seems like maybe there is less info available than there would be typically? I expected that they would have a liveblog happening, which I haven't found yet, though they are definitely covering it. This timeline of major earthquakes in Iran is scary, though it's difficult for me to compare population densities in areas there, but some of the death statistics are pretty shocking.... [more]

What I'm curious about is the specific conditions that render these particular remaining 166 (of 779) detainees more of a threat (or unplaceable) than ones who have already been released, who decides that, and who specifically has the power to transfer detainees. I'm not asking this rhetorically, but practically. Is there specific information about this? For example, I have read that Yemen, for one, is a country that cannot or will not guarantee continuing monitoring of returned detainees. Yet,... [more]
