MeFi post: All you need to know, really...
I know from experience that the panhandle of Florida is most definitely the South, but from about Ocala down it becomes New Jersey.

MeFi post: I will try not to sing on a Kia
"Now there's a man who knew how to cover songs: bring something totally new to them. I've always respected him for that."

The great Leon Russell was Cocker's band leader/arranger back then and I'm sure this was Russell's arrangement. Cocker's a great singer, but I don't know if he would have gotten where he is today without Russell at the helm during those early days of his career.

"Actually no, Russell didn't come on board until Mad Dogs & Englishmen. The arrangement in question is via Joe's original group The Grease Band, and on record features guitar by Jimmy Page."

I stand corrected and appropriately bow down to bonefish's masterful rock trivia expertise.

MeFi post: Sign, Sign, everywhere a sign.
"A yellow sign indicating a speed limit is not primarily enforceable and is strictly an advisory! That's a pet peeve of mine. Only white speed limit signs are required to be followed."

I can't recall ever having seen a yellow speed limit sign in Florida, where I live. That being said, I wish there were more yellow ones.

Levon Helm of The Band goes on at length about playing with Sonny Boy II (Rice Miller) in his autobiography, This Wheel's on Fire, a great read.

MeFi post: A meme is born
"He'd spent his entire sexually adult life fighting the urge to not use his inconsiderable strength..."

That's a double/triple negative, right?

If he is fighting the urge to NOT use his inconsiderable strength, then he does in fact have the urge to NOT use his inconsiderable strength, but is resisting said urge, so he DOES want to use his strength. Plus, his strength is inconsiderable and therefore insignificant. So,... [more]

essexjan, that happened to me at a pet store. There was a cute little ferret in a box and I said "Does he bite? Can I pet him?" She said "No, he doesn't bite. Go ahead." CHOMP!

MeFi post: A Shot of Bleach Ought to Dew It!
When I was in school it was said the sex of the child was determined by the sexual position during conception.

If the woman was on top the child would be female and if the man was on top it'd be male.

When this was explained to a ditzy, pregnant friend she gave a puzzled look and said "I guess I'm gonna have puppies."

I think at this age they are big enough to explore the tree around their nest and that's why they weren't there this morning. The other owl prolly clambered out of the nest and is on a nearby limb.

When I saw them yesterday they looked pretty fuzzy still and not mature enough to fly, not that I'm any kind of ornithologist. That's why I was surprised and doubtful that they'd flown away since yesterday. Very happy to get to see them a bit more.

Not to tarnish Gram, but it turns out he was PLAGIARIST. Yes, I, too, am shocked to learn that Gram didn't write Hickory Wind and the record company paid off the real songwriter many years ago. Read all about it:

When we shopped hotels in Joshua Tree I stood in room 8 at the Joshua Tree Inn, but we stayed up the street. I thought I got a feeling in there, but who knows. There is a small shrine to Gram with photos and records in the lobby and a guitar in the corner. It's an old style strip motel that has the feel of being pretty much unchanged since the 50s. I just noticed, it's for sale.

If you know where to look you can find the spot in Joshua Tree National Park where Gram was... [more]

"Why does he sound like that? What is that sound? Does he use normal drums? Why are his thumps so thumpy? "

Many reasons:

Drums - different makers' drums sound different from each other, like you can tell a Volkswagon from a Mustang with your ear. Bonzo played Ludwigs, but there are many good makers. Also, every drum sounds different depending on where on the head it is hit. A drum has a higher,... [more]
