A. MEN. there are TOO. MANY. PEOPLE. VHEMT needs to bump up its marketing. I try to spread the word, but it falls on deaf ears & no one gets the connection.

Adding to the pile of "good riddance, supreme and monumental asshole" sentiment.
Maybe this will be a normal human stride toward ethical evolution, as opposed to the micromillimeters he's restricted [NC] to for way too many decades. I'd rather waste my keystrokes on someone that gives a damn about humanity.

RIP Jesse Helms
My folks thought the guy walked on water. I grew up listening to his editorials on the nightly news. I can respect his standing up for his beliefs; I don't respect his attitude toward gays, and I think he did a lot to propogate the old redneck discrimination in the south. Way outdated dude.

See also: Interview with Karen Finley.
Sen. Helms, who spearheaded Congress's campaign to amend the NEA guidelines to include the "decency" standards that Finley and her coplaintiffs argued were violative of the First Amendment (the U.S. Supreme Court unfortunately disagreed, 8-1), is the man to whom "The Return of the Chocolate-Smeared Woman" is dedicated. In that newly written piece, Ms. Finley tells us: "I've come to realize that I've been in an... [more]

wallstreet1929, I've always thought the primary purpose of viewing art is to make one think. By that humble definition, this project succeeded for you. There are other purposes for viewing, too, like the visual interest, as you note. I find the detailing on currency pretty interesting and engaging, but YMMV.
I find it temporarily tragic that a great deal of the visual arts community is, ah, actually not in touch with art--that is, not making it, that is, not... [more]

TRAVELS IN UNCANNY VALLEY
Many of us are confronted by a painful dilemma: we travel to earn money,
and to see loved ones - and yet the only way to reduce the ecological
footprint of flying is to stop flying. I took 78 flights last year,
for example, which must put me in the top one per cent of individual
polluters in the world. I have committed to fly 30 per cent less... [more]

Another highly satisfied DH customer for 5+ years here. I would MUCH rather have the kind of responsive, professional support I've always gotten than some cog-in-machine anonymous Metroplis-esque company that are dime-a-dozen out there. The human element - including fuckups and honest owning up thereof, is 50% of what makes DH the best host for my money. The other 50% is that they know and like what they're doing, which means happy employees, which means good service that comes across to people... [more]

Oh, as for the humor in DH newsletters, blogs, etc, including the email yesterday about the billing snafu, it's a welcome change of pace from both scripted service rep schpiel and starched underwear suit-speak that dominated the 60's.
DH knows the difference between stand up for a living and webhosting, and knows it's possible to have fun and do a good job simultaneously. Kudos to them for having the balls to inject some style & character into the daily grind... [more]

Gehry/MIT Throwdown
It's an opportunity to breathe on a campus which architecturally otherwise looks like the nerve center for the military industrial complex.
What the hell does that mean?

Kid Nation Shocker!
Better to watch the 2 minute highlights at the very least to see what the show is actually like.
I personally think it's a breath of fresh air in the TV schlock - especially reality show TV schlock. Watching, I can't help but think that inside every single adult is a kid exactly like those: that cries openly when hurt or scared, regardless of gender, and has an innate sense of good bad and fair.
At what age did adults get fucked up and drop that... [more]

Any recommendations where one can order the yummies online? I'd love to try the Orange Pippin and honeycrisp varieties.

RIP Brad. I drooled over Boston when I was 9. But then the lame 96 ROCK SCREAMING REDNECK MORNING SHOWS AND PLAY IT TO DEATH stations made me hate the band. I realize it's the stations I hate, but once it's worn, it's worn. I bet any $ if I flipped on the classic rock station they'll be playing Boston nonstop for a week. Which would be different from only playing them 4 times a day. /end rant.

"When I hear the word 'designer', I reach for my chainsaw."
The problem is that not enough time is spent on defining the problem (the goal, process, product and/or project, or any combination thereof). The result is a bunch of noise and false "solutions".
Isn't design, particularly industrial design, about making things look as they should?
This question is a good example. What does "as they should" mean, specifically? And by whose criteria? The designer's? The... [more]

^ bad TV is not such a horrible problem; maybe it means people are actually socializing or doing something worthwhile like thinking, reading, exercising or interacting with their kids. :)
I was very disappointed when CBC was dropped from our satellite service in NC. It was the only televised place to get unemotionally delivered international news, not just who's suing/screwing whom and football/baseball/nascar which is pretty much all you get here.
