MeTa post: In my mind, I've gone to Carolina, and in May, I'll be there in person.
I'm in, flexible, but a wednesday or thursday is preferred. Throwing the Times Bar into the watering hole suggestion hat.

I'm in! We could do the Borough, since there's a parking deck close by ($1 before 7pm, free after, but maybe the Borough validates?). And we could take advantage of the 4-7pm munchies like mediareport said. I'm poor at the moment, can you tell?!)

And I've never been to the Borough either, Orange Swan, so we can lose our virginity together. :D

civil_disobedient let me bore you a little more: Mine wasn't about MeFi, but it was prompted by that kettlebell thread. Some big fat guy came up to me at a gas pump and was waving kettlebells around while saying, "Hey baby, check *this* out!!" to hit on me.

Does not calling it out = acceptance, joking or not?

I genuinely don't understand what you mean here. Can you explain/rephrase?

My dilemma with bringing it to MeTa was, if we tolerate posts like that, does it empower more folks to continue posting them? If I called it out, I'd have people telling me to chill / grow some skin / quit being a feminist, etc. If I didn't call it out, & maybe Jessamyn would have deleted it... [more]

MeTa post: Ask Metafilter is not a volunteers wanted...
I wasn't looking for volunteers, and I didn't want to disclose the budget for the project immediately, but made it clear I would pay for help.

It could be a fine line between an "ad" as the second commenter states, or a request for tapping into a network of qualified people. I'm not a corporation or a resume troller; I'm an individual looking for some help. Since there are several technically knowledgeable folks here, it was a starting place.

The post is already gone so yeah, everyone, I got the message. It might be helpful if some of the invisible guidelines were more visible. The AskMe wiki didn't really address it. As an aside, the offering of payment private would've fallen under the "volunteers wanted" offense, but I hear you me3dia.

"I need to pay someone for an hour or so's css work. Anyone interested."

This is what I was after. I guess I shot myself in the foot by providing details, and having it sound too ad-like. My search continues elsewhere. Nothing to see here, move along.

Seanyboy thanks for honing in on the real questions. This place is wonderful for drilling down to clarity. I can't post in AskMe for a week, so feel free! ;)

if you want to blame it on one guy, that's your choice.

Who said I was blaming it on one guy? You, I believe. And as for the education / choice of major, it's more the honest work and career building that develops WAY after college that makes marketability, not the degree per se. Plenty of people have successful careers in fields other than their study focus in school.

Might I suggest Robert Byrd's book, Losing... [more]

MeTa post: Are MetaFilter members a bunch of negative ninnies?...
Yes, it's negatively regarded in the way you describe.

Should we do anything (if there is anything) about it?

Manners and common courtesy combined with more thought prior to posting/commenting would be lovely- is it a realistic improvement for MeFi? The critical bent drives whether folks post or not, which doesn't seem a good motivation for sharing.

MeTa post: Are gay MeFites more comfortable making themselves...
IMHO it's the community. Here it's more of a "so you're gay, so what" as opposed to another board I frequent where there is enough homophobic commentary to keep it in the closet, even though the majority doesn't care. Here it seems more of a recognition/acceptance that being gay is part of who the person is, as opposed to all of who he/she is. Sort of like moving beyond the novelty & difference and regarding it simply as a community of... [more]

Ok, so I should've emailed Stav instead of posting to MeTa. Of course, it's possible he wouldn't know the answer (if he wasn't the original poster, as I now know for sure) and would say why didn't I ask MeTa. Yes, I've used 'more inside' a couple of times. It wasn't until it showed up on almost every post that it seemed more like noise. Ah, Metafilter. There's always more inside. The electron microscope is free to use now.

Being human, it's hard [for me] not to take on tones (not necessarily yours) present already. Thanks, languagehat.

One afterthought I had was related to the sarcasm factor. It seems that the more folks post, they develop their own posting style, which may be tolerated in different ways from a new or less vocal poster.

So if Poster A is known for caustic remark, it's more likely to be written off as their style, rather than a catalyst for a flame war, as might be the case with a less visible Poster B.

And maybe... [more]
