Is a ring now considered a contract?

In some regards, it already is considered a contract. In New York State, if a man gives a woman an engagement ring and the engagement later ends, the woman is legally required to return the ring if he requests in back. Now, this has been fought in the courts quite a few times, there have been times where the woman has been allowed to keep the ring, but the precendent that an engagement is a legal contract of sorts,... MeFi post: Carlos Is an Asian at Heart
I relate so much to that Carlos kid. Like him, I was a gifted Latino kid. So gifted that, yes, people often asked me whether I was really Latino.

I'm with you on that vacapinta. My brother and I grew up in an all white community, excelled, and everyone assumed we were from Iran. The idea of a mexican being on top academically just didn't fit with the prevailing culture, from both mexicans and especially whites. Even my americanized last name was too... [more]

MeFi post: "Loaded with soul...under control"
This is just a sympton of the gentrification of Manhattan. Whenever I'm in Harlem, I see tens of signs announcing the creation of advocacy groups trying to do their best to stop the encroaching middle class suburbanite who has decided that they want their NYC experience but they don't want to actually have to live in it.

But, hey, there's always the bronx, right?
posted to MetaFilter by Stynxno at 9:35 AM on July 9, 2008
WTF? Are you suggesting that these are people who live in the city and work in the suburbs? Or do you really mean that they're *really* people who've come from hick towns to work in the city -- like virtually everyone in NYC?

No. What I really mean is that the new inhabinants of Manhattan come from white, upper-middle class suburbs and expect to move to NYC, find the job of their dreams, and turn the new environment that they are living in into what... [more]

Salus extra Christum non est is Luther's contribution to the world

Wrong. His contribution to the world is "sola fide" (faith alone) and his doctrine of justification by grace through faith. This thought alone helped push the Reformation into reality, caused the split with Rome, the 30 years war, and the religious schism and split that has influenced world history ever since he posted his 95 theses to that door of that little German church.... Before Luther, though, Christianity didn't seem to have the very clearly-worded "with-Christ-or-against-Christ" tenet of intolerance that is embedded in Lutheranism and its historical derivatives — particularly Baptist and other fundamentalist faiths.

It would be nice to troll you but I'm not. I'm just disagreeing with what you're saying and what you're saying is wrong.

MeFi post: L’shloshet yamin: “In three days you will know that evil will be defeated by justice”
So, if this article is valid at all, what it is heavily pushing is that one scholar has come to the belief that he can read what others cannot and that these phrases somehow allow give him the opportunity to say, without a doubt that, "What happens in the New Testament was adopted by Jesus and his followers based on an earlier messiah story." I don't by this one bit.

To show this, one would have to point to events where the separate traditions of the gospels... [more]

I don't care how big of a ship this is; I'm still going to end having to tan sitting next to the gruesome twosome and a guy who will spend six hours trying to impress the underage girls that holding his football shaped mug full of alcohol ontop of his belly makes him very very sexy.

I'm A-OK with any and all organizations promoting sane opinions. Here is a sane opinion: "People are equal." Here is an insane opinion: "God told me to tell you people are equal." The fact that they these two opinions have some overlap is a happy accident.

Actually your assumption that one is sane and one is insane is pretty ridiculous and destroys any sort of validity in what is or is not "sane".... [more]

tzikeh, scroll up.

If they're seeing cost savings like this simply by washing the planes, discouraging overweight people from flying might actually significantly improve their profit margins. According to Northwest, every 25 pounds they remove from the planes translates to a $440000 cost savings. Even a 5% reduction in the average weight of passengers is probably worth a few million dollars to their bottom line... If airlines are talking about changing their... [more]

DNAB, you're making assumptions that aren't correct. The vast majority of christians, by shear numbers, do believe in the Virgin Birth and the resurrection of Christ since the vast majority (in terms of numbers) of Christians do adhere (or claim to adhere) to the early Church councils of Nicea and the like. And, for the record, you don't know your Church history so well. It wasn't until around 400AD that the Church got the power to become truly nasty. In 300AD it was still a proscribed religion in Rome, though in 301 it did become legal and the persecution of Christians officially ended.

MeFi post: Abortion as Art
Right. And that unsureness about the reason why is the focal point of this as artwork. If this bothers you (it bothers me), why? The self-examination it takes to answer that question is likely to surface beliefs about pregnancy, the rights of women, abortion, etc., that have been previously unexplored.

This kind of thinking leads to the justification of all sorts of behaviors and also helps to generalize the definition of "art" to the point... [more]

Stynxno, go get a bikini wax yourself and then report back if you think it's a good idea for children.

If the point of the article was to discuss how horrifying bikini waxes are then I might agree with you. But they're not. Instead this is just an article that illuminates that there are moms out there with the pagent girl syndrome and how teach a small subset of young girls to act and practices adult behaviors for ridiculous reasons. Lets face it - if you practice bad fashion sense it's because you hate your fellow man and you wish for them to suffer in the utmost from having to see you walking down the street and noticing that you care not for the world or even yourself.
