Ask post: economic struggle
You could go here and bone up. Alex Steffin is a friend and sustainability advocate since I met him in the early 90's.

Ask post: Any suggestions for driving from NYC to LA?
My sister and I drove from Seattle to Atlanta and back in 1990, three days each way. I'd say don't eat a lot. I stuck to Dorito's and Mountain Dew, but I'm sure you could do better.
Be sure to get out and stretch every few hundred miles.
Be sure to take along good tunage, something for every mood, 'cause radio freakin' blows.
I've found that on long road trips, there will be a moment when something rather unexplainable will make you giggle uncontrollably...... [more]

Ask post: Where to have a 100-person Fundraiser Party in Seattle?
You could try the Capitol Hill Arts Center. Or perhaps Youngstown. I don't think either of those serve food, tho.
My girlfriend does marketing and PR. I'll ask her if she knows of anything...

Ask post: Cost of living in Portland vs. Seattle
ramix - Everyone knows the Eastside is no damn fun.

I believe Seattle's a bit better equipped to handle an economic downturn than Portland. We had our meltdown in the early 70's and we ain't goin' back.

Ask post: Can you diiiggggg it??????
I would be very careful about what you put on your jackets.
I suggest you do some research in to motorcycle clubs first (perhaps talk to some East Bay Rats) and make sure that you don't find yourself involved in a misunderstanding.
Motorcycle clubs, esp. 1%-ers and the like are usually very serious about protocol. For most patchholders it's not a lifestyle, it's their LIFE.

Ask post: Ex ex go away, I don't ever want to think about you again
Weird. I'm friends with most of my exes. Just because a romantic relationship doesn't work out doesn't mean that a platonic relationship won't.
I consider a woman I dated almost 10 years ago (who is now married and has a son) a very important person in my life. After we broke up we stayed in touch and I helped her through a rough patch when her mother and grandmother passed away within weeks of each other.
I like her husband, he's a good guy and I'm happy for her.... [more]

Ask post: Jack and Jill
If Jack made an honest attempt to find work in his field, then I don't think he's wrong in taking a job elsewhere.
I've had friends who stayed together while in school in other parts of the country. YMMV.

It doesn't sound like Jill is completely sold on Jack in the first place and his leaving is a good excuse to end a relationship she cannot end on her own.

Jack should leave. The world is a big place and it's far better to regret... [more]

Ask post: Urban vs. suburban customer experience
I think there's a racial element. My city is only 8% black, but you can bet the parts of town that have fewer services and shabbier conditions are in the parts of town where there are more minorities.

I don't think higher crime can explain it all. I live in a slowly gentrifying neighborhood, where million-dollar homes are only blocks from cheaper ones. Over the hill from me and closer to the lakefront, there's a really nice urban village with more upscale shops.... [more]

Ask post: Stopping the hate
First of all, I usually take steps to remove that person from my life, or at least minimize my contact with them.

You can choose not to let your hatred control you. The person you hate doesn't care about the mental and physical stress you place upon yourself. And for some this is a kind of power.

For me, hate is an active, living emotion -- it thrives on what you feed it. Negative thoughts, dwelling on past pain(s), etc.

Ask post: How do I get Fall-loco/ How to DIY Presents for the holidays
I live is Seattle and a lot of people I've become friends with have moved here from other parts of the country. Some of them, for various reasons, can't or don't like to travel to their family's homes for Thanksgiving so we started the tradition of "Orphanz Thanksgiving".
Basically, someone decides to offer their home for the event and is responsible for making the turkey. Everyone else brings their favorite dishes and we eat ourselves silly. It used to be a all day hangout... [more]

Ask post: Meet the Kids
I recently reconnected with a good female friend that I hadn't seen in a decade. Way back in the day, I wanted a relationship - she didn't. I swallowed my disappointment as best I could and we became quite close, until we lost track of each other.

Shortly after our reunion, she indicated that she was interested in exploring a relationship...or at least resuming our friendship. And she told me that she wanted me to meet her children.

I'm not... [more]

Ask post: Marriage down the tubes
Damn.

I can't imagine your pain. That said, there are two of you in your marriage. Why is your wife going to a class with a man who poses a threat to your happiness? It's not a matter of you letting her...why is she so insensitive to your feelings? Would she be OK with it if the shoe was on the other foot?

What kind of guy goes on a picnic with another dude's wife? Doesn't your wife have female friends? Male friends that she's not attracted to?... [more]

It just depends on how much money you wanna spend!
I'd suggest the Ace Hotel. It's in Belltown, which is where the young, rich and beautiful hang out and it's close to a pretty decent restaurant and bar called Cyclops. There are some really good restaurants nearby (Flying Fish, Saito Sushi, The Alibi Room, The Pink Door, The Bada Lounge, Belltown Billiards) and plenty of bars/clubs. You can easily get to Capitol Hill by cab and hit The Baltic Room, The Capitol Club, Barca, The... [more]

Yes...by all means, move. As a native (and one with lots of friends) I keep hearing this complaint over and over...yet there are tons of women in the 40+ range on Craigslist and all the other dating sites. I know, I've met some cool women on them.

I don't know what kind of guy you are, but there is almost always something cool going on around here. But you gotta make an effort and take some chances.

However, if you think you'd be happier... [more]
