Why is Israel such a close ally to the U.S.?
along with all else that's been said, it's very handy, when you're a major power contesting influence with another, both heavily armed, to have a friend who has kciked the asses of your enemies client state, thereby gaining you access to their recent military technology to evaluate, as well as the ability to test out yours by proxy. That's certainly part of it.
Then there's the guilt thing over societal indifference to the plight of Jews pre-WWII & the horror of the... [more]

Do I need Shocks, Struts or both?
Check out RockAuto.com for online prices - they've been pretty good in the past. Struts are essentially a shock that fits inside your coil spring & are usually more hassle to remove install than old-time shocks. A car that takes struts doesn't also use shocks.
You ought to be able to google up info from Honda forums & by all means get a manual.

Go west young man...
It has been a long time, but used to you could go down to Rio Grande village on the river and pay a local to row you across to Boquillas del Carmen - a quaint village on the Mexican side that feels (or felt in 1973) like stepping back in time 100 years. However, we had to steal a rowboat to get back as no one would take us, it leaked & sank & I almost drowned from laughing so hard before I could grab some roots & haul myself out the other side.

A Vista Aversion
As of last December, you could still order Dell laptops with XP instead of Vista on most models, which is what I did for my daughters. Most outlet/computer stores/ models come preloaded with Vista in my experience -maybe you should try ordering online with the manufacturer.

No Pets, Lots of Ticks.
This happened to me once in Phoenix - we had them inside & out. Back when you could get the REAL stuff (1975) we A-bombed the outside with spray & they came out of the siding by the thousands. We set off about 20 bug bombs in the 3-Br. house after removing all clothes & anything washable, which we proceeded to wash in HOT water (38 loads). Seemed to work but the stuff you can get may not cut it, as it seems you're finding out - you need help from a pro with an EPA license and... [more]

Do I risk it?
I'm guessing that to take the case on "contingency," the lawyers would receive 1/3 of what you realize if you win. If so, that takes you to $2X, unless by showing malfeasance you get whatever to defendent would have otherwise gotten as well.

Not all it's cracked up to be.
Please listen closely - the reason the walls are bowing is that there is hydrostatic pressure built up on the outside, likely due to a foundation drainage system that has become silted and inoperable, allowing saturated soil to build up pressure. The walls, in structural engineering parlance, are "rotating". The only authoritative fix is to excavate away from the exterior walls 4-6 feet, install a new drain line, drill into the upper cinder block and install rebar at least every... [more]

Unless Consumer Reports has a later update, check the June/July (can't remember) 2007 issue at the library. They recommended the Bosch Nexxt 300 and LG machines as most energy efficient & best value frontloaders, along with a Whirlpool model that is being/has been discontinued. Best Buy had/has the LG & Whirlpool units to look at - Lowes had the Bosch & LG.
We got the Bosch W/D with 15 inch risers & have been very happy with them. Works great &... [more]

Geology & environmental science? Try Los Alamos National Lab 45 minutes from SF, or any of a number of environmental engineering support contractors. And yes, it's damned expensive to buy there, so much so that a number of years back Debbie Jaramillo, the firebrand mayor, threatened to stand out on Cerrillos with a shotgun if the Orange County real estate boomers, hollywood types, & rich Texans & New Yorkers didn't stop moving there & driving up real estate prices such that... Check out the "Handbook of denominations in the United States" by Frank Spencer Mead to get a feel for differences in beliefs, available inexpensively through ABEbooks.com, etc. When you visit a church, ask to see their articles of faith for more info.

Mugging...not a police matter?
OK - Houston Police anecdote time, circa 1977. I was temporarily staying at my brother's in an upper middle class neighborhood off of 1960, North of town near Interstate 45. One Sunday morning around 7 am the dog (doberman) started barking like crazy, we went to the front door and saw a burglar hotfooting it across the yard carrying stuff from the house next door. My sister-in-law let the dog out to run after him, and he dropped a VCR in his haste to get away (the dog, a family wuss, petered... [more]

Your baby's fever will come at night on Friday after the doctor's office is closed, and you'll become frantic about the time the pharmacy's closed. Get some periatric liquid ibuprofen to set aside for later.

A minor fender bender. Will it ruin our lives?
My 2 cents.... No, it won't ruin your life. However, FYI, my experience with Allstate back in 1986 went something like this:
Guy spun out on ice in front of me during a snowstorm/blizzard in Albuquerque and came to rest sideways in the intersection. I was sliding about 5 mph when I hit his passenger door (it was that or the telephone pole), crumpling it and breaking the window - no injuries. It was the ~300th accident that morning so the police had us just come to the... [more]

Job advice needed
Shame your lawyer (if you had one) didn't move for judicial deferment on your case if it was indeed your 1st-ever offense - after a period on probation it could have been removed. Check with the criminal court clerk in the county the case was held in and ask them if you can file for expungement. You can do this yourself instead of paying a lawyer to do it for you, if you do a little research & have a helpful clerk. Good luck.

Cops. Bend over or not?
Uh, speaking from experience (having been rowsted before in N. Houston), the police are not required, even at your insistence, to give you a sobriety test when you aren't/haven't been driving, even at your own esxpense. They can maintain your lack of sobriety based on the "arresting officer's observance that you were acting intoxicated" and off you go to jail because they felt you "were a hazard to yourself or others." This happens all the time, and in most cases, unless... [more]

Is the Taylor 110 a decent guitar?
My 2 cents - when I went looking for an acoustc for my daughter I wanted a solid wood top that would age/mellow, not a plywood like many ~mid-level guitars out there. After some research I settled on a Seagull, which I purchased from Dave Snider's in Canada & had shipped to TN. My experience was very positive. They are well made & sound great. I got the oldest a cedar top and later got a spruce top in gloss for my younger daughter. They were very competitively priced (~$340-365)... [more]

A good introductory handgun for someone with small hands?
You should go to several gun shops and handle various makes/models/calibers/barrel lengths. Find what seems to fit in your hand most comfortably/naturally (even though it's a 1935 design, I've never found a better feeling pistol than the Browning Hi-Power, & I have Sigs, H-Ks, etc.). When you've narrowed the field down, find a shop with an indoor range that rents those models and put a box through each. That should answer your question.
The ppk can be rough to... [more]
