MeFi post: No milk today
The cruelty for those in the quake was that they maybe too old to have a second child so the government being kind enough to let them have a second child seems kind only on paper.

I am wondering if the foreign holder, Fonterra, is going to take the fall. They had the temerity to try to warn of the contamination and the New Zealand government tried to whistle blow as well. Things like that get you punished.

On why the government does coverups?... [more]

MeFi post: Sarah Palin as McCain's running-mate
Is the Republican Party or members of it purposely trying to derail McCain? The Palin nomination seems so problematic on a wide spectrum of areas. If he chose her as a Hail Sarah pass without vetting then "wow." If she was foisted upon him and his team assumed due diligence then someone just shanked him, bad. I am still trying to digest everything, and I admit that this is one very strange buffet that I am ladling on my plate.

Thanks to Orthogonality and others. I am going to go ahead and think that McCain was done a purposeful disservice by both Rove and anti-abortion elements; caught in a compromise with predictable behavior he chooses a candidate that was not fully vetted. Damn, I assume he plays craps better than this blooming situation indicates. Man, there are a lot of long knives out for Palin in Alaska and wow, McCain in his own party.

Okay, I am horrible at reading people. But do the spokespeople for the McCain campaign and the Republican Party seem to be truly sincere and believable? I am watching the news and gosh, golly they are really working hard for the candidate.

I am trying to get my head out of the media echo chamber and trying to get substance to digest. I have read through this thread and the conservative voices including Konolia (who I truly respect for her convictions and... [more]

In answer about the annual Alaska checks, better known as the PFD. Every Alaskan regardless of age receives a dividend check including infants as long as residency requirements are met. There are no state taxes levied however there are Federal taxes. The PFD came about when oil wealth was placed in stock funds and managed by the state under a Democratic administration. It is joked that Alaska pissed away all of its oil wealth foolishly except for the PFD which a lot of families depend upon... [more]

I need some perspective. Do any of the medical folks have any input on the questions arising with her fifth child and her risky behavior? As on the line of trying to cause a miscarriage? Scurrilous? Yes. Possible? You tell me.

To Davar and everyone else. I am not accusing her of trying to kill her baby I want to understand the underpinnings of what is becoming broken-water gate (postings elsewhere by "maybe" medical people raise disturbing questions). I am happy to leave this alone because the ramifications are hideous. It either tells me things are gonna get REAL ugly are some things are too ugly to contemplate. Since mefi has verifiable medical people to provide perspective I raise the issue here.

Ah, so the plan is to make Palin a martyr and victim of the press? Does the press plan to be the scapegoats on this one?

Holy crap, the AIP has a you tube link where it is basically stated that Palin is a member but is a Repub for infiltration purposes. Also, the Gibson "interview" is anything but. Blog with Youtube link

MeFi post: Lard: The New Health Food?
Leaf lard is not difficult to acquire at all. If you are willing to have things shipped example here I can vouch for the quality of this. I usually buy my own hog and work out the details but you can definitely go smaller than a hog of that size.
posted to MetaFilter by jadepearl at 4:10 PM on August 30, 2008
You're welcome stbalbach. The trick is having storage and a plan for how the hog is going be parted out. The hardest part for me is that I still have to buy from reliable suppliers deeply favored parts such as, pork belly. Also, a butcher who is willing to do certain style of cuts. Tomorrow will be slow smoke cook two racks of ribs. The irony of cooking is that I have to force myself to eat what I cook. I eat a certain amount to be polite but I am much more interested in others' reactions... [more]

MeFi post: Making the Wire
from an interview with David Simon:

My standard for verisimilitude is simple and I came to it when I started to write prose narrative: fuck the average reader. I was always told to write for the average reader in my newspaper life. The average reader, as they meant it, was some suburban white subscriber with two-point-whatever kids and three-point-whatever cars and a dog and a cat and lawn furniture. MeFi post: The Kid Is Not My [Daughter].
I am sure that the news reports will include a musical background of Billy Jean and man, this is disappointing. Not because it is John Edwards, per se, but it is never good to see a relationship take this kind of blow.

I am going to go from a different angle on why Edwards' being unfaithful having impact for those not directly involved in the oath breaking. If his excuse of being on the campaign trail leads to narcissism and being isolated then Edwards choosing to risk everything for immediate pleasure has impact in the following ways:

* He judged poorly thinking that people would not gossip nor notice;
** He has made himself blackmailable. He and his friends are paying... [more]

OK, I admit it, I completely base the wedding gift I give on the Bridezilla quotient of the wedding. I am trying to be considerate and make one less difficult thing for the couple to split items when the divorce happens. Candlesticks is my go to future divorce gift.

I am looking forward to the AskMeFi of a bridegroom wanting to know if he should ditch his woman because of the Bridezilla moments or if it is just jitters kind of thing.

MeFi post: Class distinctions in the US and UK
"Prole but Proud" was a t-shirt I wanted to sell at one point. Anyway, the one thing I do notice from my travels and living across the US is that there are regional differences in how wealth is acceptably displayed. In some regions I notice, shall we say, a more upfront way of wealth display vs. a more modest or different means; modest main home and oh yeah, the lake house or cabin being an instance. While in the UK I was kind of exempt from the class mental calculations being a... [more]

She would come up to fellow gamers and ask, "would you like a candy?" and if they said, "Yes" would shoot one right out from her bodice. It was a skill, almost a gift. It is very painful for me to see photos of My Lai because it is not hard for me to see myself in the young and now at my age, the not so young victims. It is still harder when the faces of the children bear a resemblance to my children, now. But you know, I still feel bad for the soldiers. Why? Well, I wear socks and sandals and what sandals. If you have seen a woman in orange and electric blue birkenstocks and white ankle socks in the Bay Area that was me. Because you don't go half assed or half shod; either be deliriously good looking or so ugly it is a statement.

I love sandals because I have wide feet, like an elephant's, but I do not like getting the "patina" from sandals nor want to give freebies to foot fetishists so socks it is.

*cough* err...let us say, hypothetically, that you have your eyes blissfully closed and then open them a crack to see the bliss of your partner to only find that their eyes are very open and very actively scanning the distance. A possible solution to get him to refocus is to exclaim, "What, you got another wife?!" or "Dammit, we are not on the savannah and avoiding the saber tooth!". I have *heard* that it does cause re-focus.

I am not too enthralled with molecular gastronomy, too reminiscent of mass food manufacturing and processing. Aspects of the movement remind me of Futurist style meals as well with the process and aesthetic being more interesting than the meal or the diners.

But it is cool, being able to do these things and have that equipment. Nice links.

Yeah, that 'sebacious cyst' video is interesting, but more for the conversation about how it is NOT a spider bite and whether it is a MRSA boil. I was a bit appalled that he did not take any sanitary pre-cautions -- the kitchen shears were a bit much and the tweezers, ah yes, low control tweezers. If any of the medical folks here can clarify what it was that caused that cyst that would be good and what was that material that was dangling from the wound?

You can definitely tell in venues like Glastonbury festival who has raw vocal talent vs. those with only studio magic. What is also funny is that Subarus were real popular in Alaska even with some of the burliest men I knew; the car would start in some pretty cold weather and had a block heater option.
